157.0. "Clock questions." by COMICS::WEGG (Some hard-boiled eggs & some nuts.) Fri May 26 1989 06:39

			< Question number 1 >

I have inherited a mantel clock with several interesting features. However,
because it had been allowed to run down it needed a lot of attention to get
everything synchronised again.

One outstanding problem is that it doesn't chime at night (it's not meant
to), but its idea of night is 01:00 to 08:45. i.e. it chimes at quarter
to one in the morning and is then silent until 9.00am.

The question is, does anyone know if the chiming "window" can be moved so
that I can get to sleep before 1am and get the benefit of the Westminster
chimes over breakfast?

Any clock experts out there? (If YES, question 2 will follow!).

I hope this isn't a leg-pull like note 111 about second hand hammers.

BTW I found it surprisingly difficult to purchase a *new* handle for a 7lb
sledgehammer. Perhaps I should have tried a second-hand hammer shop.

    Yes. It is clockwork!

Seriously, this note is not a leg-pull. I have a genuine problem here.

Hows about moving to Finland who are two hours before us in the
UK. then the chime window would be from 11pm to 7am.

Alternatively 1) take a pair of pliers and move the small hand back
                     two hours
                  2) Place a Large placard under the clock saying
"PLEASE OFFSET VIRTUAL TIME BY TWO HOURS FOR REAL
                        TIME"

A quick phone call to a family friend who runs a jewelery/clock
repair business elicited the following suggestion (after the suggestion
that you take it to a clockmaker).

    1) Stop the clock if possible

    2) advance the time to 04:00 (ie half way through the window)

    3) remove the hands (they should pull straight off)

    4) put them back on at 12:00

    5) restart the clock.

If you can't stop the clock, then remove the minute hand, advance
to 4 o'clock, remove hour hand and replace at 12:00, replace minute
    hand...

However procede at your own risk, no liability is assumed by me
    or my source :-)

Re .4

I'm sure taking it to a clock repairer is the safest solution. I had to do some
research in order to get the synchronization of the chiming and striking
mechanism working, & I wanted to have a go at this "window" problem out of
interest.

Thanks for the information, I'll try your suggestion.
