144.0. "Solicitor for House purchase?" by COMICS::DRAYTON (Did I really say that!!) Mon May 08 1989 15:41

Can any one recommend a good solicitor in B'stoke
    to handle house purchase.

I need one that can get things done quickly, and I
don't want to have to go to Reading each time, even
though I live there. (Not for much longer...:-) )

I used John Phillips & Co when I moved house a year ago.

I'm afraid they had the normal solicitors disease - not knowing/doing
anything unless hassled on a daily basis. My estate agent was more on
the ball than my solicitor (and that is saying somehthing!)

    For eg,

The estate agent knew that one of our buyers had pulled out,
knew the status of the chain - up & down, when we might exchange,
knew of problems we had with our lease on our sale. My solicitor
did not offer any of this information without constant battering
from me - and then he didn't have as much info it seemed as my estate
    agent!

At the end of the day they were as good as any other I've used -
but I think you'll have this problem whoever you use.

Having just completed an absolutely hassle free move, I can
    recommend the following _very_ highly!

Rowberry Morris & Co (No - no relation)
    	Queen's Parade
    	New Street
    	Basingstoke
    	Tel: B'stoke 50007

They have a lady (Valerie Taylor) who specialises in conveyancing
and, incidentally, lives in Caversham. During my dealings, in order
to save me the bother of trekking in to Basingstoke centre, she
called at my house in Reading first thing in the morning to sign
    papers etc.

Full writen quotation up front - no hidden charges - friendly
professional service. I never had to chase them as they kept me
well informed by mail and phone. And on the day I moved in, I got
a "welcome to your new home" letter! I'll _certainly_ use them again.

    	Regards

    	Jon
