Hello!

My name's Karen Campbell and, although not a native of Doughnut City, 
I've lived for three years in Chineham.

I work in the International Engineering Development group at DEC Park 
in Reading, so a lot of my time's spent queuing on the A33...

Looking forward to this becoming an interesting conference!

    Whoops, I suppose as I was involved in setting this conference up
    I had better introduce myself.
    
    I am Nigel Barker & have worked for Digital for nearly 5 years for Software
    Services. Now based in Snamprogetti House in Civil Government Software
    unit. Have also worked in Wimgrove House and for one winter of
    discontent of bad memory in Dec Park (curse you A33).
    
    I live in Axford which is in the country halfway between Blazingsmoke
    and Alresford. Only about 10 minutes drive from Sainsbury's in Brighton
    Hill though.
    
    In general I like working in Basingstoke (but then I don't live
    here) although the traffic has got considerably worse over the past
    5 years and my journey to work time has increased.

	    Martin Gurran here, one of the exodus from Acre Road, Reading
    down to the Crescent, Jayes Close.

    I work in ADG European Support, but enough about work.

    At present things are great compared to the wharehouse and Reading, we
    now have windows at work and car parking spaces in town. What more
    could you want ?

I'm Caroline Williams - I work in the Crescent in ADG Support.  Currently
living in Shinfield, Reading, but am moving to Andover pretty soon.

Have worked for Digital since January 88, have met loads of interesting
people since moving down to "Silicon Valley" from Buckinghamshire.

    Not sure whether I should admit this or not.......... but I'm one
    of the few people who were born and bred in this town - and people
    who know me will say it shows!
    
    I like drinking 'proper' beer and generally having a whizzo time!

    Another Ex-Wimgrove patient - The scars have almost gone !.
    Prior to that I was an ex-decparker; since Basingstoke,
    I've worked in Ayr, and now Munich. In case anyone thinks
    I move around a lot, I should explain that I've been part
    of this funny company for about 12 years (so I did get to
    stay a while at each location).

      as long as I have, you _have_ to like it! :-)
    ... volleyball, tenpin bowling, table tennis, and I am involved
    with the Portsmouth Ski Club.
    
     Oh and of course am partial to the odd pint or two! Gales BBB
    especially, but Strongs Country at the local.
    

    
    	I'm Tony Leach from Spaghetti House in Basingstoke. I work in
    	the Civil Government Unit.
    
    	I actually live just outside Reading in Lower Earley, so I'm
    	a regular A33 user. It's nice to be travelling south on the
    	A33 in the morning rather than sitting in that queue waiting
    	to get into Reading. That is when nobody in the queue is doing
    	a U-turn in front of you when you've got your foot to the floor
   	in third !

    I work in still-more-glorious DECpark, in ESDP, where
    I write courses.
    
    Hobbies are many and varied.  As our neighbours know only too well,
    I play the flute.  I'm also quite invovled in a church in Basingstoke
    (St Mary's in Eastrop) and I'm interesting in most things to do
    with the theatre and books.  I also love cooking and eating, but

    I'm Samantha Day and I've just moved to Blazingsmoke from Reading,
    although I work at Decpark......I quite like the drive to work,
    but then I am at work by 7:45 and if I'm mad enough to be in by
    that time I'm mad enough to like the drive.              
    
    I work at the Engineering Call Desk for Computer Services and 
    have been with Dec just over 1� years.
    
    

    I'm Alex Nicholls, and I suppose it is about time I introduced myself,
    having read this new and brilliant notesfile over the last few weeks.
    
    I work in Hampshire House for SUK Regional SWAS.  I have been in
    DEC for 3 years now and just love it!
    
    I have just moved to Chineham - really convenient for the office
    and even better for my other half who works in Reading - his journey
    time has been halved not having to cross Brasingsteak every morning.

    and a bit years now - mainly in Hampshire House.  Transferred from
    F&A to SWAS around February time.  
    
    Drive a Mustard colour Marina, does 50mph downhill and needs pushing
    uphill.  Tough life isn't it?
    
    I enjoy drinking, eating and having lots of fun.

    Anyway, I'm Sennen Gomes.  I live in Blazingjoke and naturally, I work
    in Reading.  Have been living in Brighton Hill for the past 3 years
    and have worked equally as long at Reading, DP2.  Don't quite understand 
    how i've managed the drive.  Perhaps, its to do with working in Engineering,
    where I can mould my working times to suit the circumstances around me.
    So, don't attempt to contact me at 9.30am :-)
    
    Hobbies, well... will have a go at most things.  On the sporting
    side, Squash, Golf, badders etc goes down a treat.  So, what are we 
    waiting for...!

    Hoping to see some exciting notes and thanks to those who set
    this Conference.

Basingstoke drives one to drink!  

But, being a Yank who has been there several times, and found some very nice
pubs, the names of which are very fuzzy now, I suppose it would be my hobby
to if I lived there.

Yep, that was me. I was still working in Valbonne at the time and was a member
of the ERB. I have since returned to the USA and am always open to invites
to come over and do anything relating to databases if my boss can be convinced!

    I'm Derrick Thatcher.  I've been staying in B'stoke for about three
    months after a spell of commuting from Reading.  I stay in the area
    during the week and return to my home near Huntingdon for the weekends.
    
    I'm afraid that I don't find the Basingstoke night life very
    scintillating, perhaps there isn't any.  Please advise me if there

    I'm Steve Hird, I currently work in TWO (Tewksbury Ma USA), I was
    born in Basingstoke, Joined Digital when Wimgrove House opened in
    July 1979, worked in WMO for 4 1/2 years, then in Viables until
    I left the country in March 1987 to join Digital stateside. The
    life here is great, but I don't arf miss ole Blazingsmoke!

    Jon Morris - been with DEC about 5 years, always lived in Reading,
    still do, hate the single carriageway bits of the A33 (can't get
    past the slow b*s*a*d*) but enjoy the drive, shortly moving west
    about 20 miles as my better half has got a job in Swindon.
    
    Two thoughts:
    
    	Anybody know any cheap but quality property for sale in Newbury
    / Hungerford area?
    
    	Anybody known any good pubs in the Newbury / Hungerford area:
    not that I drink of course, it's for the wife.

    The part of the A33 that really bugs me is the couple of miles before
    you get to DEC Park...surely that must be thanks to Berkshire
    County Council?
    
    Still, I wouldn't be averse to supporting any action taken to
    try to alleviate this problem.

    I like the A33. Its one of my all time favourite roads and I hope
    it never gets changed into a dual carriageway. Sometime in the future
    all the main roads will be dual carriageway and you'll look back
    with tears in your eyes at thought of the good old A33. Its a super
    road because it has no speed limits, no traffic lights and no
    artificial hold ups. You can start at one end, put your foot down,
    and tear along at 70mph the whole way. You sweep gracefully round
    the wide bends, cruise down the long straights and occasionally
    hang on tight for the few sharp bends.
    
    The A33 at 4.00am, that's my kind of road.

    I agree. When its empty, the A33, is a classic 'drivers' road.

    Hmmm. No speed limit? Tear along at 70mph? I assume your are on
    about the A33 in England where the national speed limit for normal
    roads is 60mph? :-)))

    I have travelled the A33 once or twice at "off peak" times and being
    a confirmed foot_to_the_floor merchant I have to agree that a 4.00am
    it's my kind of road too.
    
    The only problem is that I normally go to work at 8.30 and come
    home after 17:30 when it is a b***dy pig of a road - hence the need
    for dual carriageway.

    here and Reading (Chineham looks nice).

    Hello peeps - Teresa Allen here - have just learnt how to use notes
    so beware!!                
    
    Have been with DEC since July 1987 (Gosh is it that long??) starting
    with SPA at Sutton Coldfield. They soon got rid of me to Warrington
    who must have known I was on the way as they shipped me off to
    Basingstoke :-)
    
    So here I am at the Crescent and loving every (well nearly every)
    minute of it. I still work for SPA, in the UK SPA Operations Team.
    
    I am currently (hopefully) buying a house at Pamber Heath - please
    no horror stories about radiation leakage!! but at the moment am
    living in a hotel. Trying to get a flat until the big move down
    from Cheshire.
    
    Anyway less of this drivvle..............
    
    Enjoy all the usual DEC pursuits but mainly activities that involve
    the Golden Lion, Stag & House, Barton's Mill etc etc

    I'm currently looking to move to Basingstoke from
    Salisbury (yes I know - I've already had psychiatric examinations
    recommended)
    
    Interests include guitar playing (very loud and badly - bit like
    Heavy Metal really), outdoor conservation (vandalising trees), outdoor
    conversation, swimming and watching Horizon. Interests would include
    drinking loadsabeer if I didn't have loadsagut through drinking

    I remember the old town (only just) and things are certainly different
    now. 
    
    I have been working on the Central Call Desk (CCD) at the support

    although I am trying to think of a new direction to take.

    in Basingstoke (sob) (I didnt know it was like this when I relocated).
    
    I'm originally from Hull in Yorkshire (way up north). If there is

    		I don't always complain - its just that I'm suffering from
    	culture shock ! I relocated from Sheffield where the outlook to 
    	life is somewhat different from down here. I've travelled quiet a
    	lot around England and Wales, and Basingstoke has to be the second
    	most un-friendly place I've been too.

    	The most un-friendly place I've been to was a little village in
    	North Wales. Most of the people seemed to be extream Welsh
    	Nationalists who wanted nothing to do with any English people.
    	They even painted nationalist and anti-english slogans on the
    	walls, but as they were in Welsh we were unable to read them !
    
    	Before anyone gets the wrong idea about Wales I should mention that
    	I was on holiday with some friends and that we had a great time.
    	Most of the people we met were friendly, sociable folk which is one
  	of the reasons I like going to Wales (apart from the sceanery).

    I suppose it depends on which editor your using - I'm using TPU, and
    I can't use the EDT PF1 sequence - TPU's the default in notes isn't

    	The editor you get in notes is defined in your profile. Do 
        SET PROFILE/EDITOR=xxx  to change it.
    
        Actually I use TPU too, but I have a SET KEYPAD EDT command
        in my init file.

If its brevity you want, what about the sequence <Control_V> <Control_L>
This achieves the above with only two keystrokes.

With a bit of work you could even cut it down to one keystroke by tying a 
key to a TPU such as:

procedure ff
copy_text(ascii(12));
endprocedure;
define_key('ff',ctrl_l_key);

Admittedly this takes 78 key presses to set up, but after setting it up the
once in you TPU initialization file, and useng <Control_L> 78 times, it averages
out to be better than my previous suggestion. Or what about

define_key('copy_text(ascii(12))',ctrl_l_key);

This is 45 key presses once only ..... ;-)
