| I believe an option would be for the customer to contact the MV
Logistics Management Center at 800-332-8012. They have capabilities to
provide the following: WARRANTY INFORMATION, PARTS INFORMATION
(including Parts cost - DECStandard and Repair cost, parts exchance and
sourcing), NATIONAL CUSTOMER AGREEMENTS, LOCATION LISTINGS FOR
SERVICENTERS, AND OUR COMPLETE SERVICENTER MENU.
They should be able to help.

| I should also add that I BELIEVE thay are currently operation 8am to
5pm Eastern time and are not currently a 24x7 option. If critical on
site service were required at Digital Standard percall rates after
hours, your customer would need to contact 800-354-9000.

I doubt this customer is in that much of a rush to get this unit fixed. And
getting service at "standard per-call rates" would probably be more expensive
than buying a replacement system.
Do we still carry spare parts for PDP11/04s? This is the first question the
customer needs to ask. If the answer is "no", the next question is if we can
refer them to a third party that has the parts.

| I would imagine the Logistics number I provided could answer that
question for. My best guess would be that parts are available - or
that we can repair them.

3938.6 | Parts supplier, not repair depot | NASEAM::READIO | A Smith & Wesson beats four aces, Tow trucks beat Chapman Locks | Wed Jun 14 1995 13:38 | 25 |
| For the Logistics organization to "repair" these systems, they first need
to have an idea of what fits in them in the first place.
That is the responsibility of Services, not Logistics. Someone has to
determine the part number of the repairable/replaceable FRU and communicate
that information to the Logistics organization.
We don't have the information necessary to "service" a customer's machines.
We have the information available to determine whether a part is available
and where, but not what part is supposed to be in the machine.
Unless the customer wants to "mail in" his 11/04 (hardly likely) the
logistics organization is the wrong place to be sending him.
The logistics organization picks up the ball AFTER the part number has been
determined, not before. If the customer has the knowledge to service his
own equipment and can make a determination as to what part he needs to
order he can contact Logistics but not before. i.e. "My 11/04 won't work
is not what the Logistics organization wants to hear.
We need to hear something like "I need to order a M-7258, rev J or higher"
and we can work the issue for the customer.

3938.7 | Old but reliable | FLDSVC::WHITE | | Wed Jun 14 1995 13:40 | 13 |
| Thanks for everyone's input.. I did do some checking (with the help of
some old friends...I'm a former MCS employee) and hopefully put the
customer in the right direction.
There is a spares depot located in Woburn and the group that handles
excess/end of life but good stuff resides there as well.
I do appreciate everyone who replied to this note, and those that
called me..
Thank you all again, very much!!

Gee Skip, do ya think there's an LP04 hooked up to that 11/04?
I see old times aren't forgotten, you picked an interesting part number
for your example...
(M7258 = LP11 line printer controller)

How could I forget?
BTW, I'll be in Syracuse in three weeks for the NSRA Street Rod Nationals.
Plan on arriving on the 25th and leaving on the 30th. I WON'T be staying
at that Holiday Inn, though. I've been told that's a rough neighborhood now.
I'll be out at the Motel 6 east of the city.
Drop me a line at CRYSLR::Readio and we'll get together for a drink or two
or three or......
