Don't know how old that CD is, but at least for the listings for the Phoenix 
area, all three of them are wrong - we sold all 3 facilities and moved 
whoever was left into a new building over a year ago.....  maybe someone 
should audit these CD phone books once in a while....

Why bother?  They sell 'em anyway.  Editing costs money.
This is the age of barely adequate software quality.

  Before we go down the rathole of whether or not the CD-ROMs
  are useful, or accurate, or worth their price, let's not
  lose sight of the point:

    o Digital Equipment Corporation is not uniformly listed
      in telephone directories in America.


  You can investigate this yourself, first hand, the next time
  you're travelling. Get out the phone book you find in the
  hotel room and look us up! Try both the White Pages (the
  sorted-by-names listings) and the Yellow Pages (the paid
  advertising sorted-by-cataegory listings).

  Then, try IBM.

  Report your results.

If a "real time" service run by NYNEX (the WWWeb Yellow Pages) isn't
up-to-date, noone should be surprised if these phone discs are bad, too.

I have brought the following to the attention of people responsible for
our appearance in the Yellow Pages and on the WWWeb.  The following is
an edited version of the memo I sent to them:

NYNEX has just announced a WWWeb server with the entire New York / New England
Yellow Pages, including telephone numbers, addresses, and hyperlinks to any
known corporate WWWeb sites.

I've taken a look at it, and there are some real serious issues that should
be addressed soon.  The URL is "http://www.vtcom.fr/nynex".  (Yes, it's in
France, apparently a partnership with France Telecom.) [to avoid certain
regulatory issues]

NYNEX has chosen to list our web site as "www.dec.com" rather than
"www.digital.com".  I think we will want to have this corrected, though
I don't think it is real serious.  I believe external users will be able
to access the server by either name; internal users cannot in general access
it except with "www.digital.com" because of the firewall and the way that
proxy servers are set up.  A number of other companies are listed with a
hyperlink to our page, apparently only because they have the three letters
"DEC" in their name.

Each of the listings needs to be looked at (and not just the Massachusetts
locations I've attached, but all of the region) for correctness and
appropriateness in the directory.  It is interesting to note that if someone
attempts to narrow the search to the Town of Maynard, there are NO listings.

This is probably what we wanted in the past; customers looking up Digital in
the Yellow Pages were to be referred to sales offices, not to Maynard, and the
hard copy Maynard area Yellow Pages contains a listing for sales offices not
in Maynard. But with this new technology, this may no longer be appropriate.

I took the initiative to send the attached message to NYNEX concerning the
most serious error, that the first listing gives a telephone number at a
private residence.  But I do not see that it is my role to have further
direct contact with NYNEX regarding the Digital listing.

Subj:	Errors in WWWeb listings for Digital Equipment Corporation

I've noticed a number of errors in the NYNEX Yellow Pages listing obtained
when one specifies "Massachusetts" and searches by business name for
"Digital Equipment Corporation".  I've attached a text version of the
results of the search.

The first error is that a number of the companies which appear in this listing
are not in any way associated with Digital Equipment Corporation, but they
appear as a result of the search, and more seriously, they have the WWWeb link
"http://www.dec.com/" associated with them.

The second error is that the first listing shown for "Digital Equipment
Corporation", the one with the phone number of "000-366-0445" (and with
an address of 150 Flanders Rd, Wbro, Ma. 01581 in the detailed info) is
in error.  That number, when supplied with Westboro's area code of 508,
rings at a private residence.

I felt that this error was important enough that I took the initiative of
reporting it directly to you.  Although I consult for our Telecommunications
Department on a semi-formal basis, that is not my primary job at Digital, and
I will refer the remainder of the issues to people who have both the
responsibility and authority to work with NYNEX to correct the remainder
of the errors.

It's not just the USA either.  I worked for Digital in Sydney,
Australia for a while in 92 and 93.  Digital installed a phone in my
Sydney apartment, but since Digital paid the bills, the phone was
listed in Digital's name, not mine.  The Digital main office is not
in Sydney proper, it's in a suburb called Rhodes.  So, for a few 
months, anyone calling directory assistance for "Digital Equipment
Corporation in Sydney" got my apartment phone number. 

    Well it sounds like we need to invent another document to
    inform employees how to register our company with tele
    directories.   
    
    Maybe something like the recent "how to answer a phone" memo.
    
    I wouldn't lose any sleep over this myself.  Is uniformity that
    important to you?  Do we have more important things to do?
    
    

	Don't fool yourself.  Our world-wide image problem is largely the result
	of a number of un-coordinated and amateurish business practices in
	many countries around the world. 

	Last year I got involved helping a customer that I had met purely
	by chance, trying to resolve a problem with supplies from DECdirect
	in France.  Impossible to locate them using telephone and business
	directories.  "Don't worry" I told the customer, we will call
	Digital in Paris and get the DECdirect number.  - What a disaster!

	Impossible to find "DEC", "Digital" nor "Digital Equipment" in or
	around Paris or even in any or all of the surrounding 200 km.  Neither
	with phone books, operator-assisted directory search, nor the very
	powerful French Minitel directories.

	"Maybe it's a small company" the customer suggested to me helpfully,
	sensing my frustration.  "Maybe they don't have an office in Paris?"

	Humbled and furious, I called Paris on the DTN when I was back in the
	office and spoke to the Telecom manager.  I sent a memo to Telecom,
	the Marketing manager and the DECdirect manager explaining how this
	was poor public image.  I didn't receive a reply from any of them.

	Other companies make sure that their multi-billion dollar investments
	and world-wide prestige are not undermined by such amateurism.

I had a similar problem trying to find the Digital phone number in the 
Melbourne, Australia phone book in March.

We, simply, don't exist outside of eastern Massachusetts and southern New 
Hampshire.

Every computer hack in every neighborhood in greater Melbourne has a 
listing AND a separate ad in the yellow pages. These ads are in every 
conceivable classification, too.  Software sales, software support, 
hardware sales, hardware service, computer accessories and supplies, every 
conceivable computer related heading in the yellow pages had the same large 
number of companies listed over and over.  There was no problem finding IBM
, Compaq, etc.  Everyone except Digital is cross-listed wherever they might 
have a business need.

Digital has a SINGLE one-liner in the directory list in an obscure heading. 
Digital does NOT have a separate ad (where one could easily recognize our 
age-old logo) anywhere in the phone book.

It took a couple of us ten minutes to find the number.   ...and then I got 
Voicemail.


No wonder nobody's ever heard of us.

    The Digital facility in Stow MA is not listed with the phone company
    (or at least not when I dialed information last saturday - they gave me
    a Littleton number!)

  No. We ought to just have someone (or lots of someones, each
  taking 5 minutes at home in the evening) ensure that we:

    o Have a listing everywhere we ought to,

    o It says something like "Digital Equipment Corp.",

    o It contains the relevent local and (800) numbers.


  I brought this up because, as evidence reveals, this is ONE
  MORE AREA where we often look like a pack of clowns instead
  of a Fortune 50 company worthy of our customers' trust. And
  unlike many of our problems, this one would be easier to fix
  than to discuss further.

  How about contracting this out to NYNEX and the like via an ad
  agency?  It is their specialty, not ours.

    This appears to me to be the responsibility of Corporate
    Communications. Is there anyone from Corp. Comm. reading this notesfile
    that can comment?
