2045.0. "New HLO building scrubbed?" by DELNI::SUMNER () Wed Aug 12 1992 00:30

Yesterday I heard from a couple of sources outside of DEC
that construction on the new HLO plant (for Alpha chip
production) was halted. One source heard it on the local
news *once* and another source had a spouse working on the
construction when the crew he was working on was told that
"their services were no longer needed". I have no information
    	other than this...

Can anybody out there confirm this??

Actually they'll wait til it's staffed and then they'll sell it.
Downsizing and profit, all in one fell swoop...can't beat it with a
stick! Sorry...just kidding...a little dark humor never hurt anyone.

My father is site foreman for the local union contracted to complete
Phase I of construction. All systems are go as far as he knows. Up
until 2 weeks ago they had all labor working 7 days/14-16 hrs. a day.

They have since cut out working on weekends, but have no plans to halt
    any construction.

2045.4sure looks like active construction to meCADSYS::HECTOR::RICHARDSONWed Aug 12 1992 11:3616
It sure doesn't look like construction has halted to those of us who
work here - the most recent thing going on, for people who don't work
here but try to get through around the construction to get over to the
route 290 connector, route 495, or the shopping mall down the road from
HLO, is that within the last couple days, the remaining pavement on the
road going to the shopping mall at the HLO end of the road has been
removed - they are moving the road over to connect more smoothly with
Reed Rd. so that people don't end up driving right into HLO1's parking
lot or delivery dock area because it looks like the "main road". It's
getting to be quite a mess - looks like the storm sewer pipes for the
replacement piece of road are going in soon, and then they ought to be
able to pave it over. That road was a REAL mess for while after they
had to blast to get rid of some ledge where the replacement road is
going in - buckled the pavement pretty good. Right now it is gravel!

Could this be an instance of disinformation planted
by some unfriendly competition? Make DEC put out as
many fires as possible in the hopes of making things
    worse than they are.
2045.7cleanroom equipment anyone??SCCAT::SHERRILLis it friday yet??Wed Aug 12 1992 13:385
A friend of mine works as a project manager for constuction work.
It seems that DEC just sold a building in Mt Veiw CA. (I work in Santa
Clara) and just left over 2,000,000 worth of semiconductor cleanroom
equipment. This did not include two 90 ton chillers that were not even
    used according to him.

Is it possible that the terms of the sale of the building included
	selling this equipment?

Is this possibly the "Cupertino spin off"? (Whose new name I forget.)
There were apparently sound business reasons for sending these folks
off with sufficient support so they'd be successful, i.e., DEC is a
potential future customer, but is better off out of that particular
aspect of the business. You can tell the details have all blurred in
    my mind.

I do't know about that , but I don't think so because they are
taking the clean room apart. I will ask him if he knows , but
that is a possiblity I never thougth of.

Funny you should talk about that , there was an story in the San Jose
paper last night about that company. I think the name is Micro-Module.
Also I don't know if the building in Mt Veiw has anything to with this
    new company.

Guess I should have more facts !!!!!!!!
2045.11A Clarification?LARRYC::SYSTEMLarry Callaghan, Santa Clara CAWed Aug 12 1992 17:0710
I believe the story about leaving a building with clean room, etc in Mountain
View is inaccurate. The facility in Cupertino was the one we pulled out of
that had the semiconductor manufacturing equipment for the multichip modules
used by the VAX 9000s. We turned it over to some ex-DECcies headed by Bill
Robinette who formed a company named MicroModule, Inc. The Mercury News article
reports that the equipment was given to them (however MicroModule will still
lease the building). The article goes further and adds that not only is Digital
interested in buying whatever they turn out, but has a financial stake in
the company (maybe in exchange for the equipment).
	To my knowledge, t

No the building I am talking about is in Mt Veiw. For the life of me
I cannot figure out what a clean room was doing there. The only thing
I can think of is that it was part of the Cupertino group. I will try
to find out the name of the company that is taking the building over.
2045.13The new HL building looked OK yesterday.ANGLIN::SCOTTGGreg Scott, Minneapolis SWSThu Aug 13 1992 01:0411
I just happened to be in Hudson yesterday with a customer. We were on
a corporate visit. Part of it was a tour of the facility. So we all
walked around HL(something). At one point, we looked out the window at
the new building under construction. I saw some massive footings and a
bunch of people who looked like they were working. I also saw a bunch of
    concrete pouring equipment.

So, as of at least yesterday, it looked like construction was
    continuing.

Yes, they are still working like crazy on the new building. They are
even working two shifts. I'm sure this project has made a few
    contractors very happy!

                   p.s.

You should've seen'em all run when the 225' crane was hit by lightning
a few weeks ago. Fortunately, noone was hurt. It never occurred to me
before that that construction site is probably the worst place to be
during a thunderstorm. What with six cranes and all kinds of concrete
reinforcing bars sticking up all over the place.

That building was used in the early 80's for plating disk platters.
