Re: Why implement.
Many organizations, especially Government require that their suppliers
be ISO 9000 accredited.
No ISO, NO Tender.. So no Business.

actual content of the standard and the certification process? The field I
would want to apply it to is not Software Engineering unlike .1

1939.4 | UK Digital Services just did it | FIELD::LOUGHLINI | William the Complacent | Fri Jun 12 1992 09:20 | 9 |
| It has just been announced that UK DPS (Digital Product Services) has
been registered for ISO (that is we passed the ISO assessment).
Talk to Bob McKean or Mike Baldock at UBO for what it took to get
through the assessment. It has been a fulltime role for the past
several months for many people to achieve this certification.

You might also want to contact Bob Kennedy's office in the Mill. He
is Mr. ISO for Digital ( he even sits on the 9000 Standards committee!)
As for the US, the EICs are currently working on getting certified and
I have worked with a couple of Manufacturing plants that have been
cerified. It is a lot of work becuse it forces people to look at what
they are doing and to document it. In Digital this is hard because it
means that managers and management in general must move from reaction
mode to planning.
As has been mentioned in an earlier reply, certification will become
the ticket to being able to bid on contracts. Not only government
but also industries that work on government contracts. Why? Cost!
A Dow Chemical, for example, does not have to do audits of its
suppliers; it only has to ask if you are ISO 9000 certified. And
Digital can do the same for its suppliers.

1939.7 | DPS UK Gets ISO9001 Registration | KERNEL::WATTPE | It's Life Jim but not as we know it | Fri Jun 12 1992 10:31 | 8 |
| I am sure that everyone will be happy to note that the DPS cluster in
the U.K. has just received confirmation that they will be nominated for
ISO9001 certification. Congratulations to everyone in the Organisation
who has put so much effort into bringing this about. It has been very
hard work and it is nice to see a really positive result.

1939.8 | ISO 9002 pain in the butt but is worth. | JULIET::NGUYEN_HU | | Fri Jun 12 1992 12:19 | 21 |
| LMC which is part of U.S.A Digital Service just passed the ISO 9002
with a flying color. It was a lot of hard works and frustration. We
had to prepare one year in advance just for this gruesome audit. There
was a lot of documents have to be written up. Everything that we do
have to be documented. Everything must follow the process. LOP (Local
Operating Procedure) have to written up.
But you know it was worth it. Not only we passed the audit, but our
quality and productivity actually improving, UNBELIEVABLE. It forced
all of us to give a second look at our work and follow step by step
what was wriiten in the process. No DEVIATION from the process is
allowed.
This ISO 9002 has help us to lower our DOA rate and bring the customer
satisfaction to 100%. Again alot of works but in the end it all paid
off.

1939.9 | Congrats! | BASEX::GREENLAW | I used to be an ASSET, now I'm a Resource | Fri Jun 12 1992 13:10 | 22 |
| RE: .8
It is good to hear the positive results for your group. Anyone who
doesn't believe that it is hard work doesn't understand the require-
ments. But as you said, the results are worth it.
One comment on your second paragraph -
> It forced
> all of us to give a second look at our work and follow step by step
> what was wriiten in the process. No DEVIATION from the process is
> allowed.
My understanding is that deviations can happen BUT (a very big but)
there must be written documentation as to why it is being done. At
least that is the way we are handling the problem. It is different
phylosophy for Digital. Many times in the past, people did what they
felt rather than follow a written procedure. If you are required to
justify the difference, it acts as a brake on those folks that were
doing things because they felt like it.
Again congratulations,
Lee G.

Chuck,
If you need something local, I will bring in what I have
on it. I have some data that could give you a quick rundown.
Previous are correct. No ISO 9000 no business. Also, haven't
standards (REAL ONES) been a long time coming? Should be
good for all of us.

1939.14 | IMPLEMENT & MAINTAIN | MTWASH::LUEDKE | LINDA LUEDKE | Mon Jun 15 1992 08:49 | 9 |
| Not only is the implementation of ISO a lot of hard work, but so is the
maintenance. Our registration company will be back in March to verify
that the Quality System you have implemented is still in place.
It took us about 9 months of hard work, documentation is one of the
keys for implementation. You must document everything! There are
people around (see DECSTD017 note) to help you through the process.
Good luck!
