| Digital's latest policy toward Iran will be determined by applicable law.
(I.E., DEC will sell to anyone, anywhere, as long as no laws are violated.)

| Usually DEC or any other company towards a foreign government depends
on the US governments attitude. Since I have not heard that the US
government has decided to allow all types of exports to Iran I assume
that nothing has changed in terms of companies that may want to do
business with Iran.

| I don't believe Digital will sell to anyone if there are no laws
to say otherwise. If my memory serves me correctly, US corporations
are now 'allowed' to sell into South Africa yet a while ago Digital
put out a statement (seen in Live Wire) that the corporation would
still not sell there.

Strange I seem to remember Digital getting a rather hefty fine from
the US government when a shipment of vaxen were intercepted on their
way to Russia. As far as I can remember they had originally been
shipped to South Africa.

Well, I suppose somebody will know for sure and post the information.

Personally, I say we sell to them (Iran) with the stipulation they
must also purchase a 7 by 24 DECservice contract, then make sure the
equipment that gets shipped has lots of problems. Just my way of
trying to get those margins up. In fact this might not be a bad idea
for Iraq either!

Methinks you meant percall, not Decservice; unless you want our margin
pulled down.

| We didn't do business in South Africa even before the recent embargo.
Not politically correct don't you know.....also, we couldn't get
permission from the Cambridge City Council. Big mistake in my opinion,
but I bet that doesn't surprise anyone.
|
1699.14 | | SSDEVO::EGGERS | Anybody can fly with an engine. | Thu Dec 19 1991 18:45 | 2 |
| Did Digital try to get permission from Cambridge? (That's what I infer
from .-1.) The idea of that strains my credulity.
|
1699.15 | | COVERT::COVERT | John R. Covert | Thu Dec 19 1991 19:39 | 22 |
| We wouldn't have needed permission to sell to the RSA from the Cambridge City
Council.
I'm sure if we had seen more business in the RSA than with the Cambridge
City Government we would have chosen the higher profit route and let the
Cambridge folk be damned -- were that the only consideration.
Prior to the embargo, we sold systems in South Africa. I know people who
serviced them. During the embargo, those systems were still there, and
somehow they were legally serviced by third parties who found a way to legally
bring in parts.
And I'm informed by a friend who was on overseas State Department duty in
Pretoria that there were other third parties who legally reexported our new
equipment to South Africa.
The South Africa embargo wasn't as tight as the ITAR (International Trafficking
In Arms) regulations that prevent the sale of weapons-quality VMS systems to
enemies. South Africa was a pariah, not an enemy. A big difference -- mostly
that third party transactions weren't forbidden.

A doorstop-quality VMS system dropped from a sufficient height.
