| Interesting. If I remember correctly, previous discussions about "Why
do New England folks get turkeys when other people don't" seemed to
center on the notion that the birds were in lieu of of company-paid
holiday parties prevalent in other geographies (US, at least).
Now, holiday parties are essentially taboo, but the turkeys are still
flyin'.

Upcoming holiday schedule and policies
As the holiday season approaches, the following schedules and company
policies should be kept in mind for planning purposes:
1) This year, normal work operations will be suspended on:
Monday, December 24, 1990
Tuesday, December 25, 1990
Monday, December 31, 1990
Tuesday, January 1, 1991
2) Both Friday, December 21, and Friday, December 28, will be full
working days.
3) Without proper approval as an exception, the company does not sponsor
holiday parties inside or outside its facilities. Parties at Digital
facilities, outside restaurants, or private homes cannot be sponsored
wholly or in part by the company.
4) Potluck lunches are traditionally held by many departments. These
festivities should be encouraged. Obviously, alcoholic beverages
are not to be served at these events.
"These expectations have been established to insure consistent practices
throughout all organizations," said Dick Farrahar, vice president,
Personnel.

Just to update my base note, my persistence paid off.
Even though my husband did get his last paycheck mailed home the week
before the tickets were distributed, since the tickets were printed
on October 15, before he left, and since they come in a separate
package from the checks, his ticket was sent to his old Cost Center.
I now have the ticket. I knew it must be somewhere, I hope this helps
others who may have a similar question of the whereabouts of a ticket
for a similar situation.
TURKEYS FOR ALL, after all !!
Thanks you to those who helped me, I did start with Corporate Employee
Services as suggested.

| Field offices were budgeted ($15.00 per employee, at one time) for a
holiday 'something' in lieu of the turkeys which New England employees
received. The local facility team determined how to use this money.
Usually a "Holiday Party" was organized, which was usually a weekend
dinner and dance party. Employees usually had to pay a ticket,
Significant Others had to pay as well. This is the first year (I've
been with DEC for 19 years) that there will be no Holiday party. I
received a mail message that it was canceled due to the current
financial position of the company. I know of several other facilities
that also canceled their parties. Deposit fees had to be lost due to
these last minute (early December) cancellations.
I was surprised that turkeys are still planned for New England this
year! Doesn't seem equitable to me.

| I don't understand why some employees feel like Turkeys and Canobie
Lake are their God-given rights and it's absolute heresy to raise the
issue of eliminating them. Frankly, if I can't afford the $6 or $7
to buy a 12 or 13 lb. frozen turkey at my local supermarket than I've
got bigger problems. How many people could be kept on the payroll
for a year for what is spent on these two items?
As a TFSO employee I couldn't help but muse when I picked up my
turkey that DEC was really giving me the bird this year:^)

| As someone who moved from the "corporate" region to the "field" this
year, I was surprised to not get a Turkey this year. I also thought
people in the field got a "gift-certificate" to get a turkey at a local
store. Its not the turkey per-se that is bothering me, but the
"thought" that was behind it. Its almost like the field just doesn't
count at holiday time. Giving up Canobie Lake was no big deal for me,
but giving up the Turkey is... or rather, the concept is...

| We've got lots of turkeys in this neck of the woods but none have
feathers. We may get some kind of get together with some of the money
coming from Corp. based on head count but never given directly to the
employee. If an employee chooses not to attend the get togethers then
they get nothing. I've had 19 years with DEC so far, both at corp.
and in the field and employees are treated totally different depending
on where you are. I would rather have a turkey then attend one of these
get togethers we have out here. The parties used to be fun before they
got so big and political. No body really mingles any more. Everyone
sticks together in little groups, just like they do in the offices.
When offices were smaller people new each other better. Now there are
so many people few know each other and nobody wants to be the first to
start a conversation, though I will admit there are a few exceptions.
The closeness and togetherness people felt during what I would call
DEC's better times, allowed for more contact and co-operation both on
and off the job.
Well so much for digression. Even though I don't get a turkey this year
may I wish all of you a MARRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Best wishes,
AL ROOT

Subj: Turkey Distribution Phase Out
[Forwarding Headers deleted]
Greetings, fellow workers:
This year marks the twenty second that DIGITAL has distributed turkeys
to employees at Christmas time.
Because of recent events on Wall Street, and our long-range goals for
the corporation, we have decided to gradually phase out turkey distribution
over the next ten years.
We will not quit the plan "cold turkey", but will gradually implement it
as follows over the next ten years:
1990 12-15 lb hen turkey
1991 10-12 lb hen turkey
1992 6-9 lb hen turkey
1993 10-12 lb tom turkey
1994 Turkey parts (Perdue)
1995 Turkey parts (supplier TBD)
1996 Turkey Pot Pies (Swanson)
1997 Turkey Pot Pies (supplier TBD)
1998 Turkey Roll
1999 Turkey Hot Dogs
2000 COLD TURKEY!!!
As we move into this decade, we must improve our competitive edge in the
business world.
We believe that, by getting this large number of turkeys off our back, we
can accomplish this goal.
Thank You.
