| I didn't see it because I had no desire to stop working to see it. If I
thought they would have anything earth shattering to say I might have went.
I won't see it on VHS either for the same reasons (and I don'yt have a VCR
at home).

| There is no DVN outlet in Salem NH (NIO). I guess we're to small
as there are only about 2000 people in the plant. I could not
justify to myself driving off site. Had it been on site I'd have
watched.

| David - I realize you are in a Field LOCATION, but a lot of us:
spend the majority of our time at customers
don't have DVN facilities in our offices (smaller than the
Atlanta 'campus')
are on the road for various reasons
are in the middle of a non-interruptable work stretch
work second or third shift
etc.
I'm sorry to be sensitive, but the "why didn't you watch" struck
me as unnecessary. Imagine the cost if all 125,000 took 1 hour
to watch!
On a positive note, those who were able to watch should be so kind
as to report, to the best of their ability, to those who did not
have the opportunity.

| RE: .0 (Why didn't you watch it?)
Because this is the first I have heard of it. And I don't exactly work in
some small office far from Maynard (I work in ZKO, Spit Brook NH).
Where was this advertised? How did you hear of it? I didn't think I was
hiding my head in the sand, but maybe I was...

I was able to watch it, I work in Bedford where it was televised...A
woman caller bluntly asked Ken if DEC was going to follow IBMs plan
to decrease headcount. He seemed uncomfortable with the question,
and didn't give a direct answer, he did say "if there is such a
plan I'm not aware of it". The recurring message from all three
was that people had to re-evaluate their career goals and change
with the times...and that technology was making some jobs obsolete,
not in those exact words but that was how I interpreted...

985.8 | Advertised? But, then people might show up! | NEWVAX::PAVLICEK | Zot, the Ethical Hacker | Wed Dec 20 1989 13:12 | 14 |
| re: .6 (Ken M: Where was this advertised?)
The only time I remember seeing it "advertised" around here (Landover
MD) was on LIVE WIRE (which few people seem to read). Of course, when I
found the announcement, I put it into our local NEWS system and sent
copies to some local UMs asking that it be forwarded to their units.
But, as far as "official" information is concerned, only those who
_looked for it_ knew about it -- I know of no effort to "spread the
news" in our district other than those listed above.

would have been TOLD to watch it.
After all, if anything important was said, I'm sure it will show up here.

985.10 | pocket review now that I've seen it | CVG::THOMPSON | My friends call me Alfred | Wed Jan 03 1990 10:42 | 26 |
| I watched the tape last night. It was very well done. The guy they
have hosting it does a very professional job. Hope the networks don't
see the tape or we'll lose him for sure. In general the quality, from
a production standpoint, of the two DVN tapes I've seen is very high.
Having seem a lot of amateurish efforts at TV over the years I'm glad
to see DEC is really trying to do this sort of thing right.
As for content I was also impressed. Everyone seemed very comfortable
and straight forward. The answers were more straight out then I would
have expected elsewhere. While they obviously had a good briefing about
what questions to expect the answers did not seem rehearsed. Although
it was obvious that Ken had had to answer a number of them a lot
prior to this show. (ie Ultrix-VMS related issues) I didn't see anyone
really trying to avoid answering anything.
The one downer was the question related to the salary cycle. There it
seemed that Ken and Jack were completely surprised. And they admitted
it. But they did commit to a public answer and they did follow up on
it. I can hope they did some behind the scene chewing out of who ever
told people to add an additional 3 months to peoples reviews.
Based on the last to DVN shows (the only ones I've seen) I may just
make a trip off site to watch the next one. If NIO ever rates a DVN
down link I will definitely watch them here.

| If you didn't see it, or the VHS tape, why not?
well firstly this is the first I have heard of it.
Secondly even if I had heard in time I haven't the faintest idea where I could
go to view a DVN 'live'.
As for the tape... if one exists in the UK I might watch it...
so much for effective internal communications ... sigh !

"NOTE: Videotapes of DVN broadcasts are also available in the Open Learning
Centers in all European countries, in the VHS or PAL format. Interested
should contact their local In_house Training Manager. For further details,

| There is an other Quarterly Report next week (Tuesday). I understand
that Ken Olsen, Jack Smith, and John Sims will be taking phone in
questions. So what you you ask if you had them on the other end of
the phone? What do you think are the big questions on peoples minds
at Digital today?

985.14 | ASK KEN | ODIXIE::CARNELL | DTN 385-2901 David Carnell @ALF | Wed Apr 18 1990 12:26 | 25 |

REF: 985.13
After the November DVN quarterly, it was my perception the DVN sites
were swamped with employees, and in ninety minutes there clearly was
insufficient time to address but a handful of call-in questions, luck
of the draw. I sent an Employee Invovlement suggestion up suggesting
an "ASK KEN" VAXnotes conference where ALL employees could list their
questions and concerns. The most relevant could then be answered in
the DVN, the next most relevant in an employee newsletter to each of
our homes, and ALL questions answered in the ASK KEN VAXnotes
conference by appropriate people answering on behalf of Ken.
Never heard anything on my suggestion being implemented, or if not, why
not.
Of course, I've never heard anything similar on the outcome of nearly
all of my 50 to 60 suggestion memos I've sent up since about a year ago
(discounting all the ones from the previous two years since then there
was no "official" suggestion group to whom to address then. But that's
a different topic.
My question would be, "When is real employee empowerment going to
become genuine?"

will the salami slicing stop?" or "can some honest comments be made on
downsizing and when it'll stop?".
