66.0. "Run as window client?" by DWOVAX::LICAUSE (Al Licause) Tue Mar 06 1990 12:44

I've had several inquiries from customers asking if DECmcc must be run
on a dedicated workstation or if it can be installed on a larger VAX
and accessed from a window server?

If so, this would allow several different system/network managers
to access the screens from their individual work stations rather than
having dedicated distributions on each station.

thanks,
Al

Along the same lines, one of our major customers only wants to see
U**ix systems, so the kind of solution we're thinking of (when the
DECwindow PM is available) is sell him a "black box" running DECmcc
and VMS, and Ultrix workstations to display the DECwindows display.
Will this work ?

66.2DECmcc SMS/EMS AnswerDELNI::L_FELICEWed Mar 07 1990 08:4713
Al,

Do you mean the DECmcc Management Station? If so, then the kit
can be installed on a larger VAX processor (see the SPD for the
supported processors) and "displayed" on a workstation. We've
done that here in the lab where we've had the DECmcc EMS kit on
a MicroVAX 3600 and displayed it on workstations in our offices.

As a reminder, due to licensing restrictions, the DECmcc SMS or
EMS software must be installed on one processor. They can't be
split up and installed on other systems.

Okay, I think we may be talking about two different things here.
I believe the 66.0 is asking about the currently available DECmcc
product, and 66.1 is talking about the DECmcc Director that is
currently in field test. If this is not correct them please clarify
your questions, but for now I will go on this premise in answering
these.

For 66.0 I will get someone from the current DECmcc (NETstation)
team to answer you question.

For 66.1 what you are asking is really a DECwindows question. If
DECwindows supports the ability to setup a connection between u**x
and VMS then you should be all set. We will probably be testing
this out ourselves at some point, but not yet.

66.4VMS <=> UCX <=> UnixCSEVEN::DANIELESNMP, right here & now.Wed Mar 07 1990 12:519
DECWindows V2 uses the VMS/Ultrix Connection to provide TCP transport
for X11, so I'd assume it works between VMS and Unix systems.

VMS/Ultrix Connection is a DEC product that provides a suite of
TCP/IP protocols, and some common applications, on VMS. The DECmcc
TCP/IP Access Module also uses the Connection, for UDP transport
below SNMP.

Jill,

Yep, 66.1 (that's me! ) is talking about the DECmcc Director. I know this is
really a DECwindows questions, but I've heard that not all DECwindows
developments support that sort of thing, particularly when it comes to
selecting fonts, but as I'm not a DECwindows expert, I thought it better to
ask !

66.6DECnet Transport Works TooULTRA::MYTHMark T. HollingerThu Mar 08 1990 12:4710
Another option (aside from using the VMS/Ultrix Connection on the VMS node)
is to run DECnet-Ultrix on the Ultrix node. All the DECwindows applications
I've tried work just fine displaying to an Ultrix node. No special setup
is required on the VMS side.

I'm not a DECwindows developer either, just a guy with a VMS workstation
running DECwindows and an Ultrix workstation running DECwindows who thinks
it's pretty neat how interchangeable the two are.

Thanks for all the replies....particularly .1

This answers my question directly and completely....unless anyone else
has any further input?

Thanks,

66.9access from PCSA DECWINDOWS? anyone tried it?RIPPLE::KOPEC_STSeattle DNT/Sales - DTN 545-4207Mon Apr 30 1990 19:0612
Anyone tried accessing the SMS/EMS components installed on a VAX/VMS
system from a PCSA V3.0 Client running DECwindows?

Does it work?

Any warnings/war stories? I would suspect some graphics warnings...
Any help appreciated.

Thanks! Stan

PS I know it's not in the SPD and thus not supported. Thus the question
mentions no word of support.
66.10marketing says they've seen itTOOK::W_MCGRATHDTN 226-5075Thu May 03 1990 12:188
At one or two trade shows, marketing has mentioned that they have
seen it running on a PCSA client. We plan to run a quick test just
to confirm it works.

I would be careful of strange colors and black-on-black window
displays. I've seen that happen on smaller bit-plane graphic systems.
