Leominster has yet to give up a goal in the tournament. Number 1 line

Their next game is vs West Springfield in Marboro (NESC) on Wednesday

| | Ooooohhhhh Baby! What a friggin game!
Ok Mac. Heres the recap. Leominster carried quite a bit of the play
in the first period but just couldn't capitilize in the offensive
end. To much fancy stuff and not enough shooting. When caught in
their own end they were very tentative at times and it cost them
twice. West Springfield up 2-0.
The second started dissapointing as Leominster kinda left their
skates in the locker room early but picked it up later on. It was
pretty much back and forth for the rest of the way with Jason Landry
making some fine stops to keep things close. With two minutes
remaining in the second Gus Labelle 2nd line winger for Leom brings
it closer. 2-1. Leominster had a number of chances in the final
minute and finished the period on a high note.
Lightning strikes early in the 3rd period as Leominster senior dman
Mike Crotty wrists a floater from the top of the left faceoff circle
that eludes a surprised W.Springfield netminder over the left
shoulder. Tied 2-2 baby and the place is rocking! Leominster gets
caught up in the moment and about 1 minute later W.Springfield is
able to capitalize on a Leominster defensive lapse to go back on top
3-2. Play is back and forth for the better part of the period with
both teams unable to strike paydirt. Three minutes left in the period
Leominster swarms over W.Springfield. Alex Walsh carries the puck on
the left side of the net getting the goaltender out of position and
sweeps a pass into the crease that is carried into the empty net by a
WS defender. While this looked to be actually tied up in the crease
it was a GOAL and we are now tied 3-3. With 2:30 minutes remaining
both teams trade opportunities and here is where the controversy
starts. Leominster is pressing in the WS end. 20 seconds left in the
game. Alex Walsh picks up a loose puck in the slot and muscles his
way through 2 defenders. Dekeing to his left his pulls the
goaltender out of position for an on ice backhand towards an open
goal. The puck seemed clearly to cross the line by a good 6 inches
however a sly defender quickly pulls the puck out of the net. Three
Leominster players start to celebrate. No whistle! Play continues
with WS carrying the puck into the neutral zone and the buzzer. Much
discussion and ref taunting from the fans. The goal judge had not put
on the light. The ref(s) clearly missed this one. Fans topside behind
the WS goal cannot believe the injustice. I'm having a freakin heart
attack. We now have a Sudden-Victory period. Sudden-Victory? New one
on me. Guess the MIAA likes to think in positive terms.
It's on to overtime and this is some quality game. Not from the refs
mind you but that another story for another day.
Overtime. Whistles appear to be put in the pockets of the refs Alex
Walsh has two quality rushes up the wing gets by the defenders only
too be mauled from behind. No calls. Opps are traded again by both
teams and 8:00 minutes in Walsh commits a blatant hook on a WS
opportunistic winger on a break-out that brings out the whistles. How
Leominster survived this PP could only be explained by a miricle
netminder in Jason Landry. My attack is getting worse and the voice
is going. 7 minutes left in overtime Leominsters second line applies
offensive pressure in the WS zone. After two missed opps the puck
squirts out to the front of the WS goal and a cat like Gus Labelle
fires a blast from the top of the left circle that hits the back of
the twine past the WS goaler. GOAL.....GOAL.....GOAL............
Oh man. What a game. Devils fans and players rejoice. A community
dance breaks out. Oh the joy...... This was one the most emotionally
draining high-school games I've watched. Unbelievable. Hats off to WS
and their players. They are a class team. No real losers in this one
and I'm sure WS will be back next year.
As Mac noted, Leominster now plays Sunday noon at the FleetCenter vs
the winner of Savio Prep and Hanover. I watched these two teams last
night for one period with Savio taking a 1-0 advantage into the
locker room after one. Savio is a small team. Just over two full
lines with one sub but can they HIT. Hanover dominated offensively
and with just watching the the 1st you can see why SAvio has made it
this far. GOALTENDING! Enough said.
Now to check on tickets aquisition. I understand tix will be around
$7 per. Nice cheap way to see the Fleet for the first time.
Well. Theres the recap. Hope we fill the joint on Sunday!

| | After the game was over last night I was channel surfing around and
came across a segment about Sheldon Kennedy on one of those news shows
like 48 hours, or 20/20, you know. Man, what this guy went though. I
know I read about it in the papers but to hear him try to speak of the
things that his coach did you could tell just what a traumatic
experience he went through. This coach was a flippin' pervert. Kennedy
said that it suddenly struck him one day when he saw his old coach with
a team of kids. He said that he came to the realization that if he
didn't speak out then he was letting the guy get away with what he did
to him, and he was letting him get away with what he was probably doing
to some other 14-17 year old kid. He just couldn't let that happen any
more. He also said that he's opened up a camp in the mountains (I'm
assuming Canadian Rockies) for kids who have been sexually
molested/abused because when he was going through his ordeal the
mountains were the only place that he could go and get any peace of
mind at all. This guy has been to hell and back and after watching the
segment, I came away with a little better understanding of just how
deeply this ordeal scarred him mentally.

| | Well. The hometown Leominster team drops a heartbreaker at the
FleetCenter to Hanover. Leominster leads 1-0 after 1, up 2-0 during
the second and the bottom falls out. They let up 2 quick goals to
finish the second period tied 2-2, and then Hanover stings them with
2 early 3rd period goals. Thats where it ended 4-2. Leominster just
didn't have the horses to contain a very deep Hanover team.
It was enjoyable year and the kids should be proud of their
tournament run.

    chasers look ethical by comparison.

| 6.52 | B's sign a local kid | ASDG::MCNAMARA | strange visitor...... | Sat May 31 1997 10:16 | 10 |
| | ...B's just signed a local kid, Mike (?) Gill, D-Man, to a 2-year
contract...kid played for Nashoba High School in Bolton, then played
    for Providence College....big, tough, stay-at-home
defenseman...Pinhead and O'Connell said they were very impresseed by
the way he handles the play in his own end...Gill played 3 sports at
Nashoba, and set school records in all of 'em...

looks like the youth movement is for real? Good luck to the local boy!

| | He is tall, not big. At 6'7" and 200lbs he will never see a minute in
the pros. Could he bulk up, sure, but he's like 22 and didn't put any
substantial weight on in college. The word I hear about him is that he's a major
project.

| | The way I see it, you have what, a six to eight week training program...
which would be perfect for him...He would end up being a lean, mean
fighting machine.

Lindros into hiding.

| | Heard on the news last night that the Buffalo Sabres have indicated
that they might like to talk to Terry O'Reilly for their coaching
position. He was saying that if they wanted to talk to him then he'd
surely be interested in listening because he really misses coaching.
    Interesting...

| | ...Barry, I heard the same thing, and isn't Shoenfeld (sp?) the GM now
in Buffalo? So, you got two guys who hated the hell outta each
other...wonder if they'll start fightin' in the dressin' room when
the Sabres start suckin' wind again??

I can hear it now, "Have another donut, you fat PIG" (Jim)
"Who you callin' a fat PIG?? (Terry)
                       "You, that's who!! (Jim)

(intro into a classic fight scene in the dressin' room)

    :^)

and, about Gil, maybe they'll condition him in Providence fer a spell,
then see how he's doing....good luck to the local kid!!
