         Hi all,

I know there has been some discussion in the other notes about
            Doom II.

Well, I just wanted to say that I recently recieved a
WaldenSoftware catalog and in it it has Doom II listed
            on CD-Rom.

                                                            Bye,
                                                             Mike.

Well, I got it!! It's 5 disks. Takes about 16 meg (25 to install).
It's one big mission instead of being divided up. Only played for
about 20 minutes so far... I won't put in any spoilers yet (especially
since I haven't seen a TON of new stuff, just a couple of things...)

86.3I want it!LEDS::MCCULLERThu Sep 01 1994 12:0310

Whoa....how did you get it? Is it beta or commercial product?
Where can I get it? How much did it cost?

and about 2 dozen other questions!

    Details please?

Yeah, spill the beans and fast, some of us can't take the stress
    of not knowing.
86.5oops, that was jail Cells.... not sells :')KDX200::ROBRDaybreak at the bottom of a lake...Thu Sep 01 1994 13:2336

it's the commercial release. I'm not entirely sure if it's actually
shipping officially (sorry)... I called in a couple of favors to get
my copy early... I've got it running under NT 3.5, but can't get my
PAS16 to work. Worked fine under DOS w/my SB.

Hm... let me see if there's anything else I can tell you about this
    thing that might be interesting...

Um, the setup program has a 'warp' mode that apparently lets you warp
to any map (1 thru 30) and has toggles for deathmatch 2.0, no monsters
    and respawning.

it supports general midi, SB AWE32 (now i REALLY gotta get one), sound
canvas, waveblaster, ultrasound, PAS, SB, Adlib. Supports PC speaker
    for sound effects.

has a built in phone list for modem play... still has nightmare!
    level...

thats all from the SETUP... lessee whats new in the game...

new music of course, the engine to me looks the same and the graphics
as well (I'm playing under NT3.5 on a P5/60), oh cool... im sitting
here watching the demo mode... mutants with chainguns, you can find
dbl barreled shotguns and toggle back and forth with that and the
regular one by hitting 2... a guy at work just came by and entered
some cheat code and they still work (god i hate those). i made him
leave though... i didnt want to see anything until i got to it...
um, its got 'fast' doors. they open and close QUICKLY! it has 'jail
sells'. vertical bars that you and the evil guys can fire thru. you
can hit the space to raise them... some of them are 'color keyed'.

um, thats about it for now...

86.6Oh, now what is Rob trying to cell? :^)LUDWIG::MMURRAYHey Frank, let me borrow your keys.Fri Sep 02 1994 07:4217

         ...Called on a few favors...

Gee Rob, I wish I had half as many contacts as you! :^)
After all the years of catching the little hints from your
notes about having this beta, or a prelease of that, or
an advanced copy of the-other-thing... Gee... just who
            do you know? :^)

On the serious side... Runnin' it under NT? Is that any good?
How is NT at running other dos based entertainment? Hopefully,
and I'm keeping my fingers crossed here, I'll have a P-90
before December and I'ma wonderin' if another OS would be
            better...

                                                        Thanks,
                                                         Mike.
86.7KDX200::ROBRDaybreak at the bottom of a lake...Fri Sep 02 1994 12:2621

its the nature of my job mike :'). been living, eating, sleeping and
working pc's for 15 years now in both the business and entertainment
side of the industry. I'm hoping Microsoft's entertainment side takes
off, they send me beta's of EVERYTHING :'). (I cant get MS Space
Simulator to work properly though... anyway...)

Doom and Doom II both run FAIRLY well under NT on a P5/60. Very
playable, but it is DEFINATELY slower. It runs quicker on my 486/50dx2
under DOS. DOS programs that behave well will generally run under NT.
If they need special device drivers though they may be a bitch to get
running or they may not run at all. If they have their own memory
manager (unless it's DPMI based) they generally won't run at all. That
describes most of Origin's stuff. I still run DOS/Win 3.11 at home 99%
of the time. I have Chicago installed at work and home and almost
never use it. I'm trying to see if it's feasable to switch over to
Daytona but I have alot more testing to do. I'm sure I'll keep the
machine dual boot anyway for a long while.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program....

86.8KDX200::ROBRDaybreak at the bottom of a lake...Mon Sep 05 1994 20:556

man, this thing is nasty... im on level 13 (i think, downtown anyway)
and the last 5 levels have been a struggle to survive. machine gun arm
guys, spiders everyplace, giant fireball throwing skeletons... it's
crazy!!! And there's still 17 levels to go.

This is no less than cruel and unusual punishment! I'm sure there is
something in the Notes etiquette about not posting notes / entries that
will cause your fellow employees - who have to wait until DOOMSday
(October 10th) - undue anguish and anxiety.

Where is the moderator when you need him/her?? :-)

Interesting...

Id Software has stated that anyone who has a copy of Doom II has a pirated
copy. So does GTi have a special agreement with Id to give away a certain
number of copies of Doom II (free for fee), or what?

CDROMs are great when the software runs from them (and doesn't still
take a huge gawp of disk space on your hard drive).

But I can't imagine DOOM being altogether very fast running off CD, so
I do not know what ID intend to put on their CD version. It'll probably
be just a simple installation disc, and still take up loads of your
hard disc!! Maybe they'll bundle a load of editors/wads/etc on the CD
like they did with doom 1 (supposedly) ???? Then it'd be worth it!

re: CD-ROM vs. floppies

I believe that Id stated that they would include the Shareware version 1.666
of Doom on the CD, not on the floppies.

re: CD as an install disk

I'd prefer having a CD-ROM as an install disk vs. spending 30+ minutes sitting
at the compu swapping floppies. I'm less concerned about disk space. The
real disk killer is if you start mucking about with wad editors and have to
save backup copies of the behemoth doom.wad.

Just got a mail flyer from GT Interactive giving me a "pre-release" chance to
buy Doom II 'cuz I'm a registered Doom owner (so it says). I don't see anything
on the flyer that looks specifically related to me, so if you want Doom II, you
can probably order it by calling 800-332-4300. This no. was mentioned in an
earlier reply, but the price on this flyer is $49.95 + 3.95 S/H as opposed to
$44.95 reported earlier. However, if you order within 10 days, you receive
absolutely free the Doom II Survival Guide (a $12.95 value) as our gift to

In the UK there is a nice publicity campaign being run, I guess by
their UK distributers, Virgin Software. At least two PC mags. have DOOM
II "World Exclusive Reviews" on their front cover.

On the back cover it is competely black except for the words "DOOMSDAY
is October 10th", nothing else no phone number or any company name
(unless you know about Doom II then it would be rather enigmatic.

When I called I first asked with what company I was placing the order,
and the operator refused to tell me. I could not figure out why she was
being so evasive...maybe she was just a hired/contracted order taker.
But she would take my order, and there was an awkward pause when she
asked for the orgination code. Many of these types of things have a
code on the offer so they can track how you learned about it, and what
rate to charge you. I said I didn't have it with me, and she
proceeded to complete the order anyways. I notice on my mailing a

Well I received my copy of Doom II via UPS this past monday...but
there is a problem....and this is coming from someone who has never had
a problem before running any previous version of Doom on the same PC.

Doom II hangs/locks up either during a game save or while in random
locations within the game. The manual states that you have to have

My DooM II arrived last night. Annoying that I paid $45 for it
and CompUSA and someone else are advertising this morning for ~$38.
    anyways....

First thing to do is watch the demos. They are really wicked
awesome. Levels where you are running around on raised walkways with
things shooting over pools and from various sides and branches.
Then another where you are running around coridoors with lots of cages
with things shooting though the bars, etc... yikes!

This version seems to have a much higher level of shoot or be
killed. More things are flying and you gotta more quick.

Just played the first two levels, pretty simple and tame, mostly
acquiring weapons and armor... though I'm having troubles locating exactly
where the trigger for the rocket launcher secret compartment is on the
first level. But that's a different note.

86.65CD VERSION VS DISKETTE VERSION??POLAR::GOSLINGKAO - 621-4519Fri Oct 07 1994 11:3913
Someone asked the question a number of responses back, and I have yet to
see the answer - which I'd like to know before making the purchase. What
is the difference (other than the media) between the diskette and the CD
version? There was some suggestion that the CD verion would contain the
original DOOM + WADS + editors. Relative to the CD version, does the game
play off the CD or is it simply the media from which you copy the game to
your hard drive?

Thanks

    Re:              <<< Note 86.65 by POLAR::GOSLING "KAO - 621-4519" >>>

Answered my own questions. Bought the CD version on Saturday afternoon
and my PC hasn't taken a breath since then. DOOMII plays directly off
the CD or can be loaded onto your hard drive. Saved games and your setup
config are stored in a directory it creates on your hard drive. I
haven't had any problems running it off the CD at all. My son has beat
the crap out of it, using every cheat code known to man and hasn't hit a
bug. It takes a bit longer to load on startup, and every once in a blue
moon slows for a heartbeat as it does a read before going into a new
section of a level. Other than this I have found no difference in speed
between DOOMII running off the CD and DOOM running off the hard drive.
The 'slowing' happens rarely enough and is not even long enough to catch
one's breath, so I haven't found it a problem.

For the record, I have a 433dx with a 2x speed CD-ROM drive and 12 meg of
memory.

Also included on the CD version is the 1st episode of DOOM which CAN'T be
played off the CD.

Lawrence,

Both versions were the same price at the store I bought it from. I did
absolutely NO comparison shopping - just grabbed it and ran, as they were
going like hotcakes - so I'm not sure if this pricing is the norm. I
didn't spend any time comparing the packages so I don't know if there are

There are lots of net.folks b*tching about how GT is late with Doom ][

Interestingly, DOOM-1 works just fine with the Soundscape! They seemed

Actually they tell me they are NOT doing 100% soundblaster calls. They
wrote the code to talk correctly to a Sound-blaster Card, not using the
documented Soundblaster programming interface. That means the TRUE
Soundblaster works just fine, but other cards that were built to
Creative Labs spec for the Soundblaster may not work. It *REALLY* is a

    The Space Marine cannot "jump"

... but he can sure fly. As someone pointed out in the "solution" to
getting into an area in D2 #3 (?) was running down a walkway and
clearing a wall and then making it over another low wall on the far
    side of that room.

In some of the later Doom 2 levels the heights are almost dizzying, and
you should learn not to underestimate how far you can "glide". Though
it does seem to depend on how fast you were moving when your feet left
the ground. That being said... there is a spot in the end of Doom 1
which you didn't have enough room to run, and you had to result to
other techniques to "fall" off the ledge as desired.

Also, in some of these rooms with crates, etc, you can "step across"
small corner areas that aren't immediately obvious. Some times it
helps to use the Automap in high zoom mode to get the movements right.

And you can 'fly' (jump) from pillar to pillar, once you've got onto
the highest pillar/room in an area, you just sprint off towards the
next one, and assuming you remember to stop when you land, you
effectively 'jump' from pillar/room to pillar/room.

The 'jump' ability is really a nisnomer.

If you are moving at normal speed and go over a ledge or whatever you
fall and your momentum will carry you a small distance from the edge
    that you fell from.

If you hold down the shift key while moving it is considered running.
If you 'fall' off a ledge or whatever when running your momentun
carries you further (than if you weren't running) and you will land
further away from the ledge you fell off of. If the ledge is high
enough you will travel a considerable horizontal distance before
hitting the ground, which looks/feels like you are flying.

The shift/run function will help you get over ledges that are higher
than you could normally walk over. For example, there was a green
armour item in DOOM One [second or third 'level'] that sat on a ledge -
you could only get to it if you ran towards the ledge, you couldn't get
    it if you were walking.

BUT, if you run across a surface then hit a higher surface your
momentum will carry you up in an arc allowing you to "fall"

In DOOM ][ this is the only way you can reach that secret area
on level 2?3?, in which you need to run, hit a small
ledge and "fly" into that open pit area...

I saw it in my local newsagency here in Belgium on Saturday. One
small drawback, however, it's in French. In fact, it is a French

and even the cover CD-ROM was labeled in French. Since my French
is about as advanced as my Mongolian I can't give a report on
what is in it, in fact it was impossible to puruse since it was
package in a closed plastic bag.
