3139.0. "Stop process and return to D.W. login screen" by 5631::SHEPRO (Know New Taxes) Thu Jul 26 1990 15:48

One of the security policies states that all processes must be logged out when
the user goes home. My management has decided that although a pause screen is
sufficient security, they would rest easier if the D.W. session can be logged
out all the way.

Some users may, on occasion, forget to comply.

What process(es) need to be stopped to get the workstation to return to the
login screen, short of rebooting the workstation?

It's not just a matter of stopping processes. What you need to do is:

	$ @SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP RESTART

Can I execute this command procedure from batch?

Tell your management to loosen their ties so that some blood starts getting
to their brains. They are letting their ignorance of workstations and
security show.

Actually, I wonder if a paused session might be MORE secure than a
logged out one.

Figure it this way... If a session is paused, you have to hit the
right password for the account that it's already logged inunder. If
it's logged out, any username will do (including the olde standards
SYSTEM, SYSTEST, FIELD...).

Granted, figuring out what username the session is logged in under
may be trivial (e.g. if your name is on your office), but at least
it's not a username of the potential intruder's choosing.
