1251.0. "How to keep icon placement from locking the icon box?" by HYDRA::COAR (Have you mutated yet to-day?) Wed Aug 09 1989 16:12

DECwindows V1, VMS V5.2.

I want the icons for some of my applications to come up in specific places in
the icon box. So far, I've been able to accomplish with the *iconBoxX and
*iconBoxY settings.

Unfortunately, I can't control all of my applications this way, and so I need to
move the icons of the few remaining by hand. This is not the problem.

The problem is that I am no longer able to move ANY icons as soon as one with
a specific placement has appeared. The icons will highlight but not move. I
can work around this by clicking on the `reorganise' button in the upper left
corner of the icon box, but then I have to manually rearrange ALL of my icons.

So, my question is: Why does forcing an icon to a specific location lock down
ALL icons? And what can I do to get around it? It would be great if the
forced icons *alone* were immovable, but that's not the case currently.

    Sounds like QAR material.

	It works for me (V2.0 DECwindows FT1, it also worked for me in V1.0).
	I set the iconBoxX and iconBoxY for those windows I can, and move the
	rest around when they come up, and it works fine.

Humm. It looks like this is a new problem, since I haven't seen it reported
before and people have been placing icons for long and long. Fraak.

I've got VMS V5.2 DW on my VS3140, but all of my applications are running as
clients on a VMS V5.1 system. *wm*Sticky set to True wouldn't cause this,
would it?

I've experienced the same problem. I don't know the cause, but I can give you
an alternate workaround: when the box locks up, simply resize it. (This seems
to unstick the system.)

1251.5I've also seen itCOOKIE::KITTELLRichard - Architected Info MgmtThu Aug 10 1989 17:574
  Before I upgraded to UWS 2.1 I had seen this often. I worked around it by
  scrolling the icon box a little. I haven't seen the problem since I went to
  2.1.

1251.6Positioning ???DSTEG::HOSSFELDI'm so confused!Tue Aug 15 1989 15:2316

	Ijust loaded v2 on SDC v5.2 vms and the icons that I force to a
	position all end up in the top left corner of the icon box on top of
	each other. Also any new icons come up in the top of the box

	By the way my icon bon is abouy 2" wide by 4" long in the lower left
	corner of the screen.

	Is there a resource name for the session manager
		icon title
		pause/quit text

	Thanks Paul H.

	I also noticed that v2 is much slower grabbing input focus than was v1.
	Is there something I may have over looked in the instalation?

1251.8Not a grid position anymoreSTAR::CYPRYCHWed Aug 16 1989 11:2617
    re: .6

    The icons that you "force" to a position - I presume you
    mean you are using iconbox_x and iconbox_y resource?

    This has been answered in a previous note. In V1 there
    was a grid and the resource reflected the grid position.
    Due to the need for monitor independence, having a grid
    set to something like 32x32 pixels did not work on all
    monitors. (it "worked" it just looked terrible)

    So, the icon motion and placement is based on pixel value
    and not on a 32x32 grid. Therefore, the resouce iconbox_x
    and iconbox_y relected pixel value and not grid position.

1251.12Repeatable ICON BOX lockingHOONOO::PESENTIJPWed Aug 30 1989 09:1815
I run VMS V5.2 w/ DECWindows on a VS2000/GPX. I place as many of the icons as I
can. My icon list contains the following:

	Session Mgr
	2 local child sessions
	1 remote child session
	1 remote decw$mail window
	1 local notes window
	decw$clock

When I spawn the carfiler, the icon box locks up. It stays that way until I
reorganize the box. If I quit the cardfiler, and restart it, the box locks
again. I do specify the placement of the cardfiler icon.

1251.13STAR::CYPRYCHWed Aug 30 1989 10:154
    Does the same problem occur if you don't specify
    the placement of the icon?

1251.14no placement = no lockingHOONOO::PESENTIJPWed Aug 30 1989 11:305
If I do not specify the placement of the icon, the locking does not occur.

If I do specify the placement, even the icons that have not been placed are
locked.
