3.2 | Phil from Hudson/Nashua N.H. | CGVAX2::CONNELL | | Thu Apr 19 1990 13:35 | 16 |
| Hi all. I'm Phil Connell. I've just started to become active in V2 and
now it's time to get into a new volume. I live in Hudson N.H and work
at NQO (DECDirect Order Fullfillment, the warehouse) in incoming
inspection.
I'm 37 years old, divorced father of 2 teenager's. Amy, my daughter is
leaving for Europe tomorrow and I'm nervous as heck. I'm here to mostly
read and learn. (Read: raised conciousness) I'll reply once in a while
and maybe more as my courage and knowledge grows.
I read quite a few other Notesfiles (N.H, Dejavu, Mennotes, H_R,
Comics) and so far this is the only one I've felt any large degree of
comfort replying in. Thank you all for that.

3.5 | john | RAB::HEFFERNAN | Juggling Fool | Thu Apr 19 1990 15:20 | 45 |
| Hi!!!
My name is John Heffernan and I work in CAG in ZK02 in Nashua having
been with Digital for 5 years. I am a Principal Software Engineer and
project leader on a product called Data Access Facility (DAF).
Enough of the boring stuff! ;-)
I am interested in seeing clearly what role my own cultural
conditioning has in my own life. Sometimes when I think I am aware
and "cured" of most of it; I find out that I am not. I am
interested in living a life where all beings are seen as they are
without preconditioned thoughts due to their race, sex, or physical
appearance, political beliefs, sexual preference, or current
life situation.
I am concerned with the way women and other groups are treated and
have been treated in the past. And I am also interested in how the
cultural conditioning to the in-power group affects and constrains my
own life.
Currently, I am a practizing Zen Buddhist and meditator and am
interested in both "sprititual" and political issues and especially
how they interelate. I am also active in the environmental, peace
movement, feminist, and Native American issues. For fun, I love to
juggle, dance, dance juggling, keeping in shape, reading, baking,
cooking, and music (all kinds but listened to the alot of folk, jazz,
and Grateful Dead of late). The other great joy in my life in
working at Children's Hospital as a volunteer every Wednesday night.
I also perform there once every two months with a friend who does
magic and juggling. I'm taking some dance lessons to get some ideas
about incorparating more and interesting dance moves into my routines.
I live alone in Acton, MA and am currently single. Reading my last
intro, I noted that I was involved with a strident, rabid,
glass-chewing feminist and I wanted to read this file to understand
where she was coming from. Well, that happened and I made many
wonderful friends from this file and came to understand women and
myself a little better (we hope ;-).
In my last intro I wrote, "I have no idea what I will contribute or learn
from this conference but no doubt something will happen."
peace,
john

3.6 | Congrats, V3 | HOO78C::VISSERS | Dutch Comfort | Thu Apr 19 1990 17:57 | 20 |
| Ad Vissers, Central Response Group, Utrecht, The Netherlands (to be
called Holland from now on). As I said in V2 note 3.116 my primary goal
here is to find some more input to learn from, but let me add to that
that I really appreciate the considerate style of this conference. I
must admit that sometimes I still feel I'm not quite adapted to that
yet.
To tell some personal things: I'm 32, single, and share my apartment
with two cats. I like music (almost everything except C&W and
Schlagers), film, SF, travel, noting, photography, and I'm (almost)
always game for few drinks in a nice bar and meet a few new people.
Around the net I can be found in EF90 (comod), Friends (comod),
Conversation (comod) (well I like drivel sometimes!), Human_Relations,
Euro-woman, World_Forum, and a few unnannounced and even some technical
ones.
I'm happy to see V3, and I wish it all my best.

3.9 | Hi from Down-Under | GIDDAY::WALES | David from Down-under | Thu Apr 19 1990 19:49 | 14 |
| G'Day,
I'm David Wales from Sydney, Australia! I make up 25% of the
Aussie =wn= readership. I am a CS Engineer working in the Logistics
Repair Centre at Lane Cove, Sydney (SNL).
I'm almost (1 more week) 28, married with no kids. Been with DEC
for just over 5 years.
=wn= version 2 was fun (most of the time) so let's see if we can
get version 3 off to a good start and keep it that way.
David.

3.10 | Charles Haynes | OXNARD::HAYNES | Charles Haynes | Thu Apr 19 1990 23:55 | 19 |
| Hello all, I'm Charles Haynes. I work in Palo Alto California as a
programmer. I've been living with Janice Comstock since 1975, we were
married in 1985. We have one kid (so far) - Kai Comstock - born April 5,
1990. We have two cats Teddy and Scheherezad (abyssinians). Janice is a
programmer too, but not with DEC.
I've been with DEC since 1984, working on various things having to do with
Unix and workstations.
I'm moderately tall, and fairly thin, with waist length black hair and an
earring. I tend to dress in engineer drag - t-shirt and levis.
I like rock climbing, whitewater rafting, downhill skiing, backpacking,
reading trashy SF, "artsy" depressing foreign movies - especially
Japanese, programming, cooking, eating, and my beautiful baby boy.
I'm a strident feminist - reproductive rights division.

I've been with DEC a little over 19 years. My title is Project

| Jim Henderson, Priority Operations manager for Customer Services Logistics
in Andover, MA.
Been with DEC for 13 years (in August). Since joining Digital I've lived
in Colorado Springs (twice), Phoenix and here in New England, originally from
Northern California (silicon valley area). One of these days I want to wind
up somewhere west of here. Divorced for 3 months, 3 boys 19, 13 and 7 all of
whom live with their mother. So far we have a friendly divorce and I have easy
access to the kids.
Up to now I've been 100% read only. I have found the conference helpful as
I adjust to being single again (loving it so far), and as I seek to grow.
Other interests include reading, long walks, music (mostly Grateful Dead and
blues oriented music) dancing, cooking, and slowly getting into excersize.

| I'm David Wittenberg, and I work in Architecture and Advanced
Development in the Secure Systems Group.
I'm getting married on June 3, and most of my energy these days
goes into planning the wedding.
I've been in earlier versions of =wn=, and am just returning after
a two month absence. I'm hoping that this version will be able to
control some of the ping-pong noting that drove me away from the
last version.

3.15 | Doug Gordon | WAYLAY::GORDON | House poor... | Sat Apr 21 1990 13:34 | 41 |
| I'm Doug Gordon, and on this, my 30th birthday, I think it's
appropriate for me to sign in to V3. I'm here because, in the words of
Gregory McDonald's character I. M. Fletcher, "I collect people."
I'm a Software Specialist IV (what a silly title) working for
Internal Software Services (ISWS) out of Parker Street, but for my nearly
four years at DEC I've been contracted to Manufacturing Engineering
Information Systems in Tewksbury. I've been reading =wn= since the first
week I was at DEC. I do software and system management. I generally
describe my job as "jack-of-all-trades, resident lighting designer and
director of pyrotechnic effects."
There are probably a lot of changes coming in the next couple of
months. I bought a house in Nashua, (closing in mid-May) and will be
looking to move my job towards NH in the near future to dodge the double
tax bite.
I've stuck out what I consider some low content periods in previous
versions of =wn= because the "me" of today is much more aware of some
things than the "me" of four years ago, largely because of this file. I am
the product of all the people I encounter which tends to make me a liberal
moderate with a random crazy streak.
Outside of work, I used to be the resident lighting designer for
the Walpole Footlighters and have even appeared on stage. Distance from
Walpole has curtailed that activity, but I will probably be looking for a
new group in the fall. I attaend the theater as oftean as my schedule and
budget permit. Reading & Music are also big on my list.
Around the net, you can find me here, or in ASKENET, THEATRE,
HACKERS (all of which I host & co-moderate), H_R, and some fourty other
conferences I keep up with as much as possible.
I'm "mostly harmless" and attend most of the =wn= parties. Perhaps
now that I own a house, I'll offer to host one.
I don't really know what got into me today, my previous intros have
been much shorter than this. Ah yes, and I sign my notes with either "--D"
or:

Location: ZKO (Spit Brook Road, Nashua NH)
Job: Consulting Software Engineer, DHSG
At DEC 13 years. I've done languages, operating systems,
graphics, utilities, a little real-time, a little hardware.
Personal: 40, only child, married to Barbara Bazemore (another member

Why did I start reading? Lunchtime discussion with JimB. Why do
I keep reading? It brings a smile to my lips, a tear to my eye,
and a thought to my brain. I will write on occasion when I believe
I can contribute a fresh insight. I get a lot from this file, but
time pressures often prevent me from participating more actively.

| I'm Douglas C Buckland, although most people know me as Bob.
I'm a Program Manager working out of the Ottawa office in Canada.
I've been with Digital in England, and now in Canada, since 1977
with a short break when I immigrated to Canada.
I'm married (21 years) to a woman I met on a blind date when I was
working in Myanmar - my first job after university. Have one son
(17) who seems to spend more of my money than I do.
Came into =wn= as a reader last summer, decided I like it here and
now feel comfortable writing as well as reading. Still however
in learn mode, probably always will be. Have noticed an increased
awareness of some of the subtle sexism in society since I've been
here so I am getting something from this. Hopefully at some time
I can contribute something back.
Cheers,
Bob

Nebraska, who turned five the end of February.
I'm going to be forty (wow, already!) in August. I'm mostly a read

getting better, and this file helps that. You'll see an occasional

3.24 | Sister Ray | STAR::RDAVIS | But there the resemblances end | Wed May 02 1990 02:25 | 19 |
| I'm still more or less Ray Davis.
During weekdays I can be found at ZKO, Gnashua NH. During nights and
weekends, I'm in Cambridge and Boston (with fairly frequent jaunts to
NYC).
I'm one of those most grisly of beasts, the apolitical male "feminist".
I read, eat, drink, watch films, talk, write, listen to music, and
wander on foot. Hot buttons include dehumanization, dull mainstream
art, journalism, attacks on birth control rights, and conformity.
Pleasure centers include the English language, harsh medicine (honesty,
for example), aestheticism, cities, eccentricity, and cool weather.
My =wn= persona is too cautious for my tastes but that's life in the
big city... I also note in RADIO_RADIO, BOOKS, JOYOFLEX, and the usual
suspects.

3.27 | Everything you were afraid to ask and didn't want to know | LUNER::MALLETT | Barking Spider Industries | Wed May 09 1990 16:32 | 104 |
| Regular stuff:
Steve Mallett
Maynard (the Mill)
New Product Operations (part of L.E.S.M. or L.S.M.F.T or something)
Personnel Specialist; current job task: design and write a
Human Resource Development Manangement system. At the moment
I'm coding the User Abuse module.
13 years with Digital, all of them in Manufacturing (yes, I
know; this explains a great deal). I'm currently looking over
"the package" and odds are pretty fair that I won't be around
to do this again in Womannotes-V4.
Semi-personal stuff:
Residence: Sudbury, Ma. (wherein lies the corporate headquarters
of Barking Spider Industries and it's wholly owned subsidiary,
Barking Spider Studios)
Marital status: separated
Live-in companion: J. Fujington Dinkweed, IV, esq, pats. pend.
(a.k.a. "Fuji", a.k.a. "the Fuj", a.k.a. "walking furball").
As cats go, he's a pretty decent dude, but that's no accident
because I trained him to believe he's a golden retriever and
he, being the dim bulb that he is, fell for it.
Chronological age: 42
Emotional age: 14
Somewhat more intimately personal stuff:
Looks: I'm often mistaken for Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, or
Tom Cruise except when the Moon is in Pisces at which time
I tend to resemble Howdy Doody or Margaret Thatcher.
Attitude/temperament: really sensitive Alan Alda type of
guy except when I'm being wicked macho like Mr. T. Pretty
much your garden variety cross between Hulk Hogan and
Mr. Rogers.
Alter Ego: Entertainment craftsperson (music, theater, etc.)
Actually, to me, this Digital gig is my "alter" ego and the
entertainment business thing is really "home" to me. I started
at Digital as a contract worker between school semesters and
when I was offered a permanent job, I told myself, "Well, I'll
just do it for a year. . ."
Spiritual leaders: Ram Dass, Jesus Christ, Moe, Larry, and Curly
Secular heros: My father, Lily Tomlin, Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Eric Clapton, Foghorn Leghorn, The Firesign Theater
Favorite quotes:
"Sometimes the magic works; sometimes it doesn't."
(Chief Dan George in "Little Big Man")
"It may turn out that human intelligence will be just one
of Nature's failed experiments."
(Unknown, but I'm sure it wasn't me)
"It's not who you love or how you love that counts; only
that you love."
(John Lennon to Brian Epstein)
"I think we're all Bozos on this bus."
(The Firesign Theater)
"Do not fold, spindle, or mutilate"
(Anonymous)
"Never forget your nano-seconds."
(Rear Adm. Grace Hopper)
"You no-good son of a cross-eyed swab jockey!"
(my father)
"Moe! Larry! The cheese. . .No! No! The *Limboigah*"
(Curly Howard)
Like, *really* intimate stuff that I probably should keep to myself,
but I'll tell you only if you promise to never tell anyone else:
Secret hope: to play in a band with Ann Wilson (of Heart)
Secret fear: Ann discovers what a mediocre musician I really am.
Sexual preferences: species with scales, mayonnaise, exotic
locations (e.g. hydro-electric power plants, Newark, etc.)
Embarrasing moment: Years ago in Germany after a, um, social
interlude with a young woman. She made it clear that she
really did, uh, that is, she really *did* have. . .uh. . .well,
you know. Anyway, despite the fact that I hadn't a clue as to
what I'd done (or not done) that time to contribute to such
an obviously delightful ending, I was real pleased with my
bad self, doncha know. Then I stopped and thought about my
previous encounters and realized that, despite partners'
assurances that it had been "wonderful", this was the first
time it really had been "wonderful". Worse than that, I
was too embarassed to ask what it was I should(n't) do to
ensure that next time around my partner could have another
"wonderful". Ahh, youth. . .
Words I'd love to hear again: "Digital Equip. Corp. closed
today at 189."
Words I never want to hear again: "You are hereby remanded to
the State of Texas' Department of Corrections for a period
of not less than two nor more than 12 years."
(The all-important) Why I Participate in Womannotes:
While it's true that at one time I had motives that even
I myself understood only vaguely, I've found that with
the passage of time and water that I'm increasingly more
concerned with the moral, ethical, existential and
mathematical questions which, failing clear resolution,
will no doubt lead inquisitive minds towards higher
planes of de-evolution and social unrest.
What was the question again?

Been with DEC 2 yrs. and 9 mos. (has it been that long!), all of them
at ZKO (Nashua, NH), and all of them writing documentation for project
management software. Having done battle at 3 other companies since
1975, I'm enjoying the relative sanity of DEC.
Married 15 years this October to my best friend, also a DECcie. We
enjoy cats, dogs, old houses, antiques, cooking (because it means
eating), and, most of all, being able to enjoy them together. She
supplies the planning, judgement, and ambition -- I can reach things
on the top shelf.
I'm mostly read only, and write when I feel I can add a thought or
perspective. I'm here because my best friends are women -- I enjoy
their company and their point of view. Also, by being here, I hope
that I can stay sensitive to those points of view and find new ways
of being supportive of my best friend.
Thanks for all I've learned,

My curious work situation is to be an engineer in a marketing group,
Laboratory Data Products/Science marketing in MRO4. Currently one of
the designated vectorheads here (as in VAX Vectors, recent new optional
architectural feature of VAXen). I'm a displaced Wisonsinite, living

have a good light/heat ratio. What feminist enlightenment I have is
probably thanks mostly to a particular one of four delightful sisters,
and to my instinctive appreciation of what's known as Women's Music.

| Hello All,
I've been reading thru V2 of this conference off and on for a couple of years,
find it thought provoking, figured I may as well introduce myself.
I'm Karl Reebenacker, learning to be a System Test Engineer in low end systems
at PKO. I started working here a little over a month ago after making good my
escape from FXO 8^), with a much needed week of carving up some Rocky Mountain
snow in between jobs. I was a Hardware Engineer, am now a Software Engineer,
talk about culture shock.
I'm recently divorced, amicably w/no kids, and a fanatical skier starting to
experience withdrawal symptoms. Participate in several other Notes conferences,
mostly read only. Actively note in, you guessed it, SKIING. Been a Deccie for
3.5 years.
My political leanings tend to be moderate to conservative Republican. I
wouldn't vote for Mike Dukakis for dogcatcher. I'm pro choice but, for reasons
that are my own, personally uncomfortable with the idea of abortion. I
consider myself a "humanist".
I'll probably continue to participate in a 99+% read only mode here, but may

| Hello.
Brian Patman, based at Shire Hall, Reading, UK. Work in Human Resource
Development and Training. With Digital 18 months. Previously in
teaching, preventive medicine and HRD consultancy.
I am married to Rebecca. We have four children: Henry (Hal) aged

The motives which drive my interest and participation in this
conference are similar to those which drive my career and family
life, and my involvement with the "People First" group in the UK:
I care for/about all people and seek to understand and appreciate
them even more.

Personal: Have been married for 13 years. My wife is also at

| Hi,
I guess I should put an intro in since I'll be coming to the IV party
(I had one in V2)
I'm John Wood, 42, divorced, single parent of an almost 16 year old
daughter (who frequently acts like she is closer to 25). I live and
work in Nashua.
I've been with Digital for 16 years and am a software product manager.
I've been reading this file for a couple of years now and have
learned a lot. I'm a 99% read-only noter, but have contributed on
rare occasions.
I still have a lot of learning and growing to do.
Thanks for helping...

| Heylo. I'm Daniel Katz, a 21 year-old TAG on his last leave term
before returning to Dartmouth College to get my BA in English
Literature and Creative Writing.
Before anyone asks, yes, there is a lot of pig-ignorant sexism at
Dartmouth, but we're working on changing that. Some people just
need to have it chiseled out of them.
I've just recently started reading this note, and am enjoying it
immensely -- makes my editorial columnist instincts twitch again.
And let's see...the biggest hoot I've had at DEC so far is...
"You're a SECRETARY????"
I had to deal with that a lot the last time I was on leave term,
doing essentially the same job. I got a lot of calls for "Danielle"
Katz. Hee.

| I've been reading and participating in =wn= since a few months after
I joined Digital over 2 years ago. Prior to that, I'd spent four years
on active duty in the Air Force, following four years of college and
AFROTC. Those eight-plus years involved some heavy supression within
myself of character traits that weren't convenient nor acceptable in
the male-oriented world of a military officer. I found =wn= to be a
wonderful place to help me examine my attitudes and re-adjust, after
that self-suppressing experience. This community gave me strength,
challenged my motivations, taught me to listen, and enabled me to
change my life, far to the better. This journey is not easy, and its
not over; nor shall it ever be. But I am now a radical feminist.
Joyously. Thank you, womannotes.

I used to be active in various other notes conferences a year
or two ago. While it has been a nice way to connect with
one or two people who feel strongly about the same things
as I do, I do not find this a very effective medium for
non-technical communication especially with people I know
very little about. I anticipate remaining in mostly read-only
mode. Lately I've been following the "animal rights" discussion
here with great interest (I was raised a vegetarian and have
chosen to remain one).

| Hello. My name is Mike Valenza. In order to better introduce myself,
I have compiled the following list of personal attributes:
o Hobbies: none.
o Obsessions: notes.
o Compulsions: notes.
o Addictions: blue corn chips, chicken fajitas, and pop tarts.
o Virtues: none.
o Vices: notes.
o Best Physical Feature: Several women have told me that I have nice
legs. Well, okay, it was just one woman. And she was joking at the
time. Come to think of it, I have no best physical feature.
o Worst Physical Feature: I refuse to answer that question.
o Future plans: In the future, I plan to continue to participate in
notes.
o Favorite thing about notes: no one knows what I look like.
o Least favorite thing about notes: for some reason, many people
seem to think that my last name starts with the letter "z".
I would like to thank the moderators of this conference for allowing me
to introduce myself here. This is a fine community of people, and this
conference serves as a thought provoking and intellectually stimulating
forum. And the best part of all--this place is just loaded with chicks.

I've been around Digital since 1973, as employee, then contractor,
then employee again. I am currently a software engineer, working
on VAX DOCUMENT, in Spit Brook (ZKO).
I was married for 23 years (4 grown kids), am divorced 6 years.
I suppose I am a "masculinist," which is someone who puts his
energy into wrestling with the same screwed up culture that
feminists wrestle with, but with the focus on how the system
adversely affects men, rather than women.
I'm here to give and take.

I hesitate to put any labels down 'cause I'm constantly changing
(I think it's called being alive) so by the time you read this,
I'll be a different person.
A relatively stable label is my desire for growth and learning,
hence my reading of this file. I appreciate the generosity and openness
of the frequent contributors.

| Not being read-only anymore, I guess I ought to introduce myself. My
name is Neil Sherman. I am currently a co-op (working on a second
bachelor's degree) working with the ASIC design group at FXO. I am 25
years old, and greatly looking forward to the end of my days as a
student (until grad school, anyway).
Some of the other notesfiles that I like are Eats, Audio, H_R,
Mennotes, Moans, and Grateful. I am mostly a reader, but I try to
reply when I think there is something new to say. I enjoy notes a lot,
and I always get a kick out of meeting noters "for real".
I sign my notes "Nool", a name given to me during my first college
experience. Nool is a hybrid of Neil, cool, and tool (as in tooling
around, not "he's a tool"). See you all in virtual wonderland ;)

| Ciao from Italy!
I'm Andy Takats, 29, married to an Italian woman with a big friendly
family. After 6 years in the states, we're back here (I lived here 2
years before we got married and moved to the U.S.), this time with
our fun daughter Selene (2.4), for an undetermined period. I'm
going to finally study some architecture, we'll try living here for
while, and then we'll see. There's never a shortage of challenges
with international relationships; so far we're doing OK.
I've become very sensitive to women's issues over the years living with
Antonella, and especially now with Selene. A few months ago, after
hearing about Model Mugging at my old work (MASSCOMP/Concurrent), I
encouraged Antonella to take the course; she did, and it was a good
learning experience for her and for me.
I'm with DEC temporarily at the moment as a consultant (here only 2
weeks); I'm not sure how long I'll be around, but it's great to
be able to follow events, etc., in the U.S. I'll be in touch.
Ciao!
AndyT.
Italy so far is so(we met in

I am here again for a while after an absence of 6 years, most of
which was spent happily playing ultimate

I introduced myself in an earlier incarnation of this file, but much
has changed since then. Recently I have felt able to read this
conference (and other human relationship conferences) again, so perhaps
I should re-introduce myself.
My name is Ian Frederic Philpott, I am a [full] colonel in the British
Army reserve, I have a doctorate in mathematical physics (ballistics) -
so you could perhaps call me "colonel doctor", but please don't :-)
I now work as a a "windowing systems consultant" in the Southern
Technology Resource Unit in England.
My wife, Usa Ann (Usa means "dawn") is Thai - the nickname that appears
in my personal name above means "black lion" in Thai - it is my in-laws
nickname for me, though the origins are a bit hard to explain (they
date back to the early part of my military career).
My wife and I met in America - we were both living in New Hampshire at
the time, and after a whirlwind courtship we married in Merrimack, NH,
much to the annoyance of my parents. My contract ended and we came to
live in Britain, a land that is totally alien to my wife, and
increasingly so to me - it is amazing how you perceive prejudice for
the first time when you place yourself outside of the mainstream of
local society. We still hope to move back to America, but 'que sera
sera' ... perhaps we will move to the US, perhaps Australia, perhaps
Thailand. This might be hastened if I get "rightsized" out of the local
operation here.

| (Reposted from WOMANNOTES-V2, with updates)
(I was in the transition process during the inception of -V3 and so have come
in late -- GO, V3, Long (and UNINTERRUPTEDLY!!!) May You Wave!!)
I've been at DEC since May '89. Notes in general, and =wn= in particular, have
been VERY helpful in my acculturation process, as well as fascinating,
sometimes amusing/infuriating, and always enlightening. Thanks, all (most of
you that is :-), for sharing!!
I live in Natick Mass. with my dear wife of 26+ years.
Here's a short technical-weighted bio I did for another notesfile:
Dan Kalikow, Northeast Regional Personal Computer Integration
Resource Center, OFO-Burlington MA
* Job: Corporate Integration Consultant, emphasis on Macintosh/DEC
connectivity.
* Time With DEC: 1.5 years; spent ~>1 year in the LJO2 Engineering
group which created the PATHWORKS for Macintosh(tm) product set
with Apple Computer. Now happily spreading the word about Mac
integration to the Digital Field and to our customers.
* Former lives: Prime 8 yrs., DG .5 yrs., BB&N-Cambridge 11 yrs,
Asst. Prof., Experimental Psychology, U. of NC 2 yrs., Brown grad
student, Harvard undergraduate, callow youth.
* Sound Bite: "IMHO, DEC's Desktop Integration products -- an
implementation of NAS -- represent near state of the art in
client-server computing. Not just file and/or print service from
Mac, DOS, or OS/2 clients; that's necessary for openers, but
doesn't utilize enough smarts on the server side. Similarly for
X-flavored C/S computing -- it doesn't give enough of a role to
*its* "server" side. By "near state of the art," I refer
especially to the DAL (formerly CL/1) phase of the Mac/DEC alliance
product, or to SQL Services for Mac/DOS/etc.; and when folks start
writing real task-to-task distributed apps using our DECnet or
AppleTalk APIs, our platforms will REALLY begin to take off!"
* Scotch: No :-)
We're DEC... Client/Server computing "R" us...
(-: **BRAG ON** :-) -- with apologies in advance for the length, NEXT REPLY
recommended for the uninterested... Much of what follows was lifted from that
blurb you (may) have to write for your 25th college reunion. As we begin our
story, Dan, (-: "47 years young," :-) is sitting at his Mac II...
Debby and I met on my 19th birthday (at a Brandeis mixer! :-) and have been
together since. She later earned a Master's in Clinical Psych from URI. For
the past 18 years, she's run a very successful custom-decorated cake business
that gives rein to the artistic flair she didn't know she had until she first
wielded a decorating tube. By now, she's modeled virtually every known solid
object, and not a few abstractions, in cake! She also works part-time in
high-tech marketing research.
Debby & I are almost(?) through raising two wonderful kids, 22 and 19. Jodie,
our older, graduated Harvard in linguistics with high honors last June; got
"the ONLY non-academic linguistics job in the WORLD!" and is now working at
Oracle in Silicon Valley. Mandy is a Sophomore Russian/Slavic Studies major at
Harvard. As the joke sez, "By sending two kids to college, we got poorer by
degrees!" But there's NOTHING we'd rather spend it on than our kids'
educations.
Our two daughters have been our chief joys. These are two witty and delightful
people it's been our pleasure and privilege to bring up and to know. Not
surprisingly, I've found that to raise daughters has strengthened my feminism.
Debby & I had a very rocky time last winter -- she had two sinus operations
for a tumor that really had us scared, plus a splitting, 9-week nonstop,
recuperation headache. But thanks to the fine Boston-area medical community,
she's made a full recovery! Whooppee!
Where I'm coming from: I'm a Mass. native, liberal Democrat (who nevertheless
loathes Silber and voted for Weld), pro-choice, "unintentionally pc" :-):-).
Both my undergraduate and graduate degrees were in Experimental Psychology, and
after my doctorate I actually professed (at U. of NC) for a couple of years in
that field before deciding I wanted to do full-time research (and to get a
better excuse to play with computers full-time!).
I spent the '70s and then some at Bolt Beranek & Newman, the Cambridge
think-tank, doing a whole range of applied engineering consulting work, from
psychophysics and psycholinguistics to office automation (as it was beginning
to be called in those days) and general human factors. It really felt like a
succession of post-doctoral fellowships... One interesting line of work
developed out of our digital signal processing work -- I coordinated all, and
led some, of BBN's lab work on the (in)famous "eighteen and a half minute gap"
tape that played a central role in the Watergate scandal of '72-'74. I wrote a
successful clinical diagnostic test still used in audiometry. I also got into
TENEX and TOPS-20, PDP-8's and -11's, electronic mail, text-editors and
-formatters, laser printers and the rest.
One of my major satisfactions then, as now, was putting new productivity tools
in users' hands. In that connection, I also recall with pride the several
women secretaries who were early adopters of those tools, whom I "mentored"
through the transition to the development staff.
After a short and disastrous stint at DG (I made the strategic error of joining
an innovative OA group that was incompatible with the rest of the product line,
and left before the photon torpedoes hit), I spent the rest of the '80s at
Prime until the layoff ax fell.
Aside from working on EMACS, a declarative text-formatting language, and
PostScript laser printers, my chief claim to fame at Prime was as the senior
resident "Mac freak." In the late '80s, I passionately advocated and *nearly*
pulled off :-( the kind of strategic alliance between Prime and Apple that DEC
enjoys today (well OK, in retrospect, turn that :-( into a :-) 'cause Digital
Has It Now).
I remain a "Mac freak" to this day. I *better,* I've bought three -- our
upgrade strategy is to buy one, send it off to college with a kid, and buy the
next at undergraduate discount rates. Yikes, no more kids...
Here at DEC, I've got the best of both worlds -- a Mac II on my desk and plenty
of VAXen to tap into; bright, motivated colleagues; and lots of growth
potential in the market segment I'm pointed at.
Some favorite things: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tom Clancy, James Clavell,
Stephen King, Desperado, time-lapse photography, international food (Indian and
French are faves), and romantic (25th-anniversary, in our case) trips to
France. I particularly recommend hot-air ballooning over the Loire, bed &
breakfasting in actual Michelin-listed chteaux, and that evening cruise down
the Seine where you dress up and they feed you a 5-star meal as Paris glides by
at sunset... Ahh... And don't forget to buy a rose for your SO...
(BTW, FWIW, I like it when Noters mention their geographical locations -- the
EasyNet is so time/place transparent, I sometimes wonder whence on the planet
the musings appear. But then again I wanted to be a cartographer when I was a
kid; perhaps this curiosity is out-of-place.)
Back to the college reunion blurb... There's much that one leaves out in a
summary of this sort -- goals not met, mistakes made, paths not traveled. As
ever, the rules change as you go along, and only the most enduring yardsticks
are reliable. My wife and I are together, healthy, and happy; our children are
bright, beautiful and full of promise; we tend our figurative garden. The
seasons change. Love endures.
Thanks for listening, see you online... Dan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been reading and enjoying this file for months now. Now that I've
begun shooting off my mouth, I guess the time has come to introduce
myself.
Since coming to work for Digital almost 8 years ago, I've had the
opportunity to work with women in peer relationships and on both ends of
the boss/subordinate relationship. It's been great fun.
My SO's name is Alison and we've been together for 13 years now (married
for 8+ of them). There have been good times and bad but the amazing thing
is that there appears to be a general upward trend toward good times.
Knowing her has given me reason enough to like women in general.
While I think prejudice is wrong (at least the coarse granularity
prejudice like male/female and black/white) I don't think that harping
on the wrongness of prejudice is likely to improve today's sad
situation. Instead, I think that change is more likely to be achieved by
pointing out the cost of prejudice. I don't think that we can afford to
handicap (or waste completely) approximately half of our brains and
talent. We can't afford it in our company nor in our country nor in our
world.
I intend to go back to being a quiet voyeur because I am more likely to
learn things if I stay silent. Furthermore, the last thing this file
needs is yet another opinionated male (and that describes me pretty darn
well). I would like to thank the participants of this file for providing
more in the way of wisdom, compassion, and forbearance than I have seen
in a long time.

I'm Mickwid Lam from Hong Kong. I just discover this topic. Sometimes
before I have created a new topic on sexial equity, have you read
that?
I'm a boy with 21. Working in Digital as a cooperative student in
ISEDA/HK (Internation Software Engineering Development

30-June-1991.
I hope in my days in Digital I can learn more, both from my job

Hong Kong is a nice place. If anyone of you would come to Hong Kong,
I hope I can give you help.

Hello!
Kevin Johnson, newly transplanted to Colorado Springs from California,
I've been a DECie for 11 yrs. Pat (my SO) and I love it here- but the
temperature and altitude take a little getting used too.
I've heard much about this conference for a long while now, but
have only recently begun reading it. I enjoy the dialogue between the
sexes such as I've seen here, and the insight gained from glimpses
of women's perspective on so many topics. I hope to occasionally
contribute (positively and non-obtrusively, of course! :=) from
time to time, and am sure to learn a lot, in any event.

Since my attention was drawn to this Conference today, and i opened it

myself, although I must admit that I already know quite a few who've
been noting here already. I'm Don Casey and I work in Commonwealth Govt

information about myself should anyone be interested, but in the
meantime, it's awfully nice to make your acquaintance.

| I've been with DEC for just over 9 years as a software specialist in New Jersey,
then a maintainability (ugh! jargon alert!) engineer in Littleton, Mass., and
since October, a software engineer. I'm 33, married to another software
engineer (who prefers small companies), and I've been a quiet feminist of sorts
for at least half my life.
I've been an off-and-on reader of this conference since its first year. I can't
keep up with the flood of activity, but I drop in occasionally. I've left
several times when things have seemed too angry or when my noting time became
too limited, but my curiosity's always gotten me back.
I really value the thoughtful, caring tone of this conference, and I want to
see it continue -- and thrive.

3.84 | Congrats | SUBURB::SAVAGED | | Tue Mar 12 1991 09:24 | 27 |
| Hi!
My name is David Savage, based (and born) in the UK.
I'm a 33 year old, single guy with 'normal' (?!?) tendencies, although the
sense of humour gets a bit out of hand sometimes, who has been
fortunate to travel and work quite extensively in the USA and Europe,
making many friends in the process.
I care enough to want to know how, and what, various people think and
that is my reason for reading.
The personal side, which is fractionally more interesting than the work
aspect, centres around a fairly active (skiing, sailing, hill climbing,
theatre, films, music) hub interspersed with healthy couch potato
balancing spells (who wants to go out on a winter's night when the log
fire is built up and friends have turned up??).
The *professional* side is that of a Business Analyst specialising in
CASE tools and structured methods.... I told you it was boring.
Anyway, thanks for a whole gamut of emotions whether it be amusement,
concern, horror or more stomach turning. Congratulations and best
wishes in your resolves.
Dave

3.85 | Looking for myself...outside myself, too. | MISERY::WARD_FR | Going HOME---as an Adventurer! | Tue Mar 12 1991 15:07 | 25 |
| Since I already entered some notes, perhaps this serves to
formalize my being in here.
I have been noting around various files for four years now,
but just last week I entered this file for the first time.
Curiosity, I suppose.
I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and work in Santa Clara,
California.
In regards to women, I like them. They also present me with
some of my greatest challenges. ;-)
I work hard at understanding who I am, and part of that process
means understanding who others are...and when it has to do with
my prefered sexual appetites, more understanding of a women's reality
becomes imperative. Perhaps that is why I am here at this time in
this file.
I tend to be honest and express myself freely. Some of you are
aware of that already. :-) Anyway, since this file is clearly
intended to be a safe refuge for women somehow, I will endeavor
to respect that space and "hold myself back" perhaps more than
I might otherwise.
If there are any personals about me that are important to you,
then you'll discover them.

3.91 | Jim Paradis | KVETCH::paradis | Music, Sex, and Cookies | Thu May 23 1991 15:34 | 34 |
| I've been read-only in =wn= for a while, but now that I've entered a reply
I figure I should introduce myself...
My name is Jim Paradis, and I work in the Alpha Migration Tools group at
LTN (one of DEC's ghost-towns; the building is about half empty...) My
technical expertise is in UNIX internals (I spent a year in the ULTRIX group
at ZKO before coming here), but the work I'm doing now is causing me to
branch out into other areas (something I've wanted to do for a while anyway).
I'm 29 years old, married to a WONDERFUL woman, no kids (and no plans to have
any), 5 cats. In addition to my techie pursuits, I like cooking (I do most
of the cooking at our house), carpentry (we're renovating a 100-year-old
house), music (I sing and play french horn [no, NOT at the same time!]),
science fiction, and lots of other things.
I'm here because I've always had an interest in gender related issues...
ever since I was first told as a child that I "threw like a girl",
"walked like a girl", etc. Now that I look back on it, I notice that
a LOT of the early social patterns I developed are often described as
"feminine". It wasn't until later as a teenager that I started absorbing
some of the so-called "male" patterns. I find that some characteristics
of each side are quite useful to me (e.g. the female desire to build
consensus, and the male assertiveness), while others I sometimes find
detrimental (e.g. the female's tendency to passivity, and the male's
competitiveness). I see my life as a continual striving to find the
best of both sides; male AND female. You might say that I stumbled on
Taoism without knowing what it was 8-)
As I said, I've been read-only up until now, but more and more I'm feeling
the need to respond to some of what I read with observations of my own.
So you'll be seeing more of me 8-)
Take care, everyone!

My name's Rob Harrah, 35, single parent of an 8 year old daughter.
Write code, fix users' problems, translate documents, go to meetings.
Also read NOTES a lot when the system isn't to slow. I enjoy living

Hi Eileen -
Why stay in Europe ?
1. I really, really like working for DEC in Germany. The overall
benefits package (2 mos. per year off, a car, total health care
coverage, et al . .) make it to be a good deal, even if the taxes are
awful.
2. My daughter is getting a first rate education, as well as three
languages.
3. The food is outstanding . .;-). . . .
4. I've been in "read-only" mode about the states for the last 10
years, apart from vacations. I would be more than a little bit scared
of being or feeling out-of-place. Sometimes, the things I read (or see
on CNN here) sadden or depress me. I know that the whole country is
not down the tubes, yet the sensationalistic aspects of modern
journalism tend to leave me with a skewed outlook on life in America.
5. Besides, the presently cheap dollar makes easy enough to fly
back whenever those ol' homesick blues get too intense.

| Well, then, I'll just have to move to Europe. :-)
Actually, I know some of the benefits of living in Europe,
as I used to live there (Ireland). The educational benefits
are especially good, but the two months off would be the
deciding factor for me. I'm planning to go to the south of France
next year. If it's anything like what I've heard, I may never
come back.

Yup, I've grown quite, quite accustomed to the two months off per year
thing. Actually, for employees of DEC Germany, it is more. . . . 2
months off is the base, plus the work week is 37.5 hrs. per week,
although we work 40, yielding 2.5 hrs. a week surplus. We get to
credit these hours towards the vacation time per year. What this
really means is that an employee gets a *lot* of time off. Plus, the
number of vacation days per year is indexed to your age, with more days
off as you get older.
More reasons to like working over here (but I still miss good BBQ!)

Hi Everyone!!
I'm Paul DiTommaso. 29 (and holding) ... Software Engineer, working in
Marketing at the moment. This October is my 5th year at DEC (YEA! 3 weeks
vacation!!!!) I live in Marlboro.
Its been four years since I've read and written to womannotes ... I figure
its about time I write again! I know some of you already, but for those of
you who I don't know, here is some more info.
Interests:
I love to cook, ... for myself and others. I cook all sorts of styles,
but prefer italian, chinese and cajun. I love wine also, and try new
wines every chance I get. I prefer red wines.
I'm pretty active. I produce theatre shows, run sound for theatre and
other events in the city. I DJ on my spare time. I love to ski and
play volleyball. I try to keep fit and work out as much as possible.
(which isn't enough, there just aren't enough hours in a day). I tend
to be a night time person, staying up late and getting up late. I love
to socialize, which is why I get involved in so many things.
Well, I've rambled long enough, hopefully not too long!

| Hi,
I'm Scott Forten and I work here in LKG Littleton as a graphics coordinator for
T&N Publications. I am usually an on again/off again reader of womannotes
and mennotes but since I placed a reply here, I feel it polite to introduce
myself.
I have worked for DEC for almost five years (four in Security at BUO training
Center) and have enjoyed being here. I've met alot of friendly people and
have met many wonderful friends through various note conferences. I hope to
meet many here as well.
I come from a large family (five sisters and a brother) and currently am living
in Lexington with two of my sisters, my nephew, and father. One of my sisters
works for Digital too.
What I like to do on my spare time?
Swim - I've been swimming since I was a baby and just love to swim underwater
as opposed to swimming above water. On summer nights, I'd often go
swimming in my pool at 3am just to relax and think.
Read - I love books, especially horror books. I have most of Stephen King's
novels, all of Dean R Koontz, and dozens of other authors. At one point
I had over three hundred books. On a quite week, I can read three
good sized books.
Cook - I love to cook for my family and someday want to have my own gourmet
kitchen with everything in it.
Eat - Eating out with good friends is a very enjoyable event. There's nothing
like good friends, food, and conversation. I've enjoyed several different forms
of cuisines like this; Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Vietnamese, Ethiopian,
Mexican, etc. Fortunately, I don't look like I enjoy eating. ;^)
Dancing - I love to dance. I dance at work (I've been caught dancing in my
office a few times) at home and I go to Boston 4 times a week. Mostly
to BUDDIES and then CITI on Sundays.
Well, that's about it (ABOUT IT?!!? JEESH! THAT'S ENOUGH ;^) )
Hope to be a regular participant in this conference.
Scott
