Gee, Mike, I don't think I can top meeting Dave Barry, but
1) When I was a child, I accompanied my family on a vacation
to Las Vegas. We took our poodle with us, and thru her,
met Eartha Kitt (actually we met her poodle, who happened
to have Ms Kitt with him). For the duration of our stay,
I walked the dogs on a regular basis. On the last day, she
invited me into her cottage (into her bedroom no less, where
she was very nonchalantly completely nude!) and autographed
a photo for me.
2) I once sat at a table across from Dick Van Dyke, in a vegetarian
restuarant in San Diego.
3) During my term of office as student body president of the college
I attended, I met (met-heck we played cards and ate M & M's
together!) the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
Oh, yeah, and I've met (and have autographs of) several members
of the Chargers football team-Kellen Winslow and Dan Fouts.

| My famous people aren't too exciting; however, I have two family
members who've rubbed shoulders with people of note.
My mother once sat next to Robert Redford on a flight to Denver
and chatted with him all the way. She didn't know who he was but
found him to be very attractive and "nice." When she left the plane,
she asked him his name and he told her. Later, in relating the
incident to my sister, she happened to mention his name, and my
sister about dropped in her tracks!
My husband, Michael, lived in Corona del Mar (a portion of Newport
Beach, CA.) before his stroke and hobnobbed with a number of famous
people. He knew the Kennedys and especially liked Bobby. He took
etiquette lessons from Nancy Roosevelt--FDR's daughter-in-law and
a former nanny to his children. FDR's son, James was quite prominent
in politics in California and had quite a bit of memorobilia from
his dad. Michael lived next door to Dan Guerney of Indy 500 fame,
and shared a barber with John Wayne. He tells some interesting
stories about his life there.

| Oooh, I get it Mike, lifestyles of the almost famous and still obscure!
One of the houses we lived in during the mid-60s ("8711 Higdon
Drive, Vienna, Va") was across the street and down the block from
Hubert Humphrey's house. I think.
In 1972, while still in the running for the Democratic nomination,
then-Senator Ed Muskie hobnobbed with the congregation after services
on the steps. I shook his hand (I was a kid, it was a big deal!)
Summer of 87, I was lunching with a friend in Santa Fe, when she
said, "oh, don't look now, but thats ___ ___, the actor who was
"Frank" in Blue Velvet and the mad scientist in Back to the Future!"
[she knew his name, but I've forgotten it.] Well, I looked anyway
(very casually, of course) but I didn't recognize him even though
I'd seen both movies. [Dennis Hopper?]

ERTHA KITT WHAT!!
I used to live near Washington DC. I ran into all kinds of Congressman
and Senetors but my real brush with greatness was one day in 1978.
I got on an elevator and there was 4 people in it. I thought I
recognized the shortest guy in there as Henry Kissenger. We chatted
briefly and he introduced me to someone else...George Bush who at
the time was unemployed.
At one of my sites the nightime operator was a Redskins cheerleader.
I'm not saying she wore tight cloths but the dime in here back pocket
was dated 1973 (someone told me).
My wife (who finds so many 4-leaf covers that she doesn't even try
to look for them because its so distracting to see so many) has
shaken hands with the Cowsills. She danced for some kind of amatuer
hour thing in Atlantic City. Marty Allen was also performing at
the same place and he autographed her arm and shirt. She also has
all the First Edition's autograph but not Kenny Rogers'.

| STORY #1...
Several years ago (maybe 14) I wrote to the Trouble Shooter which
is a help column in a southern California newspaper. You can ask
for help finding odd things, selling odd things, etc. Anyways,
I wrote to him about an old set of encyclopedias that my mother
had passed down to me. It was hers as a child and in beautiful
condition. Only problem was, it was missing one volume.
The day the article came out I got a phone call at work from a little
old lady named Mrs. Jones. She told me she had the volume I needed
and would I like to come by and see it. I said sure and went to
see her after work. When I got to her house, she was in the backyard
working in her lovely garden. As she and I walked back toward her
house she looked at me and ask what size clothes I wore. I was
a bit shocked by such a strange question but went ahead and told
her what she wanted to know. She told me she had a daughter who
was in 'show biz' (doesn't everyone in So Cal?) and that she thought
that I may be interested in *buying* some of her daughters old stage
clothes. At this point I was still pretty confused.
We went into her house and she had me wait in the den while she
went to get the book. As I was waiting I noticed there was a wall
covered with photos of a lovely woman with long blond hair. This
I figured was her 'show biz' daughter. I didn't really catch on to
who her daughter was until I reached the far end of the room where
there was indeed a very familar face, only this one had lonnnng
black hair, parted down the middle. All of a sudden it hit me.
This woman was Mrs. Jones, mother of Carolyn Jones, Morticia on
the Addams Family (snap snap).
Just as Mrs. J handed me the encyclopedia, the phone rang. It was
Carolyn. She had called to see if the book her mom had was the
one I was looking for (Carolyn knew I was looking obviously). Anyway,
as it turns out the book was one year younger than the set I had
but I took it anyways. Apparently the set had been Carolyn's when
she was a child and after she grew up, grandma would send one volume
at a time to the grandkids and this one (and a couple others) just
never got sent. Lucky me. By the way, Mrs. J asked me to pay her
$5.00 for the book, which I did. P.S. I didn't buy any of Carolyn's
clothes, they were really glitzy.
STORY #2...
At about the same time as story #1 I sold Avon. Every other week
I would go out to regular customers, take orders and sometimes sit
and have tea and cookies with my favorites. One such favorite
was Mrs. Medley. She was a kind woman and I always enjoyed my visits
with her. Well, one Saturday I dropped in to deliver an order and
tried to make it brief because she had company. She wouldn't hear
of it and offered me tea and introduced to her guest. The introduction
went something like this..."Jodi, this is Kathy, she is one of Bill's
groupies..." I had no idea who Bill was or what a groupie was for
that matter. I stood there kind of dumb-founded until she realized
I had no idea what she was talking about. She kindly explained
that Bill, her son was Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.
Boy did I feel stupid. All this time I was in the house Bill Medley
grew up in and didn't even know it. sheeesh.
STORY #3...
About 8 years ago my husband and I were invited to a party where
Buddy Hackett was a guest. He had just done the Abbott and Costello
story with Harvey Corman so he was in demand, as they say. Large
numbers of women were crowded around Buddy to get a closer look,
or whatever. My husband suggested I join the crowd, I said no thanks.
I had absolutely no desire to get close to Mr. Hackett. We moved
to a different part of the party. I told my husband I had to poweder
my nose and headed for the bathroom. As I came out of the bathroom
Buddy came out of the next room. I tried to be cool and not let
on that I *knew* who he was. All of a sudden an arm wrapped around
my shoulder and a voice asked my name. I turned and there was Buddy
hangin' off my bod ("yuk" I thought). We walked down the hall and
when we got to the end he steered us off to another room, making small
talk all the way. I couldn't believe it. The room was large and I
didn't notice much about it. Buddy leaned even closer to me and
whispered that he wouldn't mind a kiss. I said I didn't think
that would be such a great idea but he persisted until I finally
asked him what his intentions were. He grinned, pointed across the
room to a man standing behind a camera and said "just one for the
camera" and gave me a gentle kiss. It turned out to be some kind
of promo deal and I was just at the right place at the right time.
Well, I've got other stories to tell but it's getting late and I've
got people to meet, places to go...(i.e. kids and home)

| Great notes so far!
When I was a kid, I shook hands with "Yaz". I hated (and still
do) baseball, but loved him.
My mom tells a story about her mother (whom I never met--she died
tragically of cancer) who worked as a pastry chef in a
restaurant. At the time, (early '40's) chiffon pies were a new
and popular dessert, and she made the absolute best. One day she
was called out of the kitchen, and introduced to a smiling man sitting
behind the remains of a huge piece of her strawberry chiffon pie.
It was Rudy Vallee, the singer, and he was so impressed with the
pie that he just HAD to meet its maker!
I was in the audience when Barry Goldwater made one of his speeches
in my home town, Wolfeboro, NH (HOW long ago??).
When I was in summer stock in '69, my director was Francis Cleveland,
son of the late president Grover Cleveland. Matter of fact, I wore
Mrs. Cleveland's inaugural ball gown as "Gigi"!
..now if I could just get to meet William Hurt....

he hasn't run for president! Also met tricky Dick Nixon...the

Don Ho - at an airport. There was this tall guy in a long leather
coat about 5 feet away from us. We didn't know who he was. Then
this guy came running in, asking us if we had seen Don Ho. My mother
said "Is he here?". Then the tall guy turned around and said here

Wow, I feel fortunate! I used to be quite the "stargazer" in my
younger days, my friends and I used to get a big kick out of seeing
what rock bands we could meet. This can prove to be quite a challenge
for any of those who have tried it, but it's really as simple as
booking a room in whatever hotel they happen to be in. Once you
have a room key, you have easy access to roam around and someway
or another you get to go to the after-show parties. Don't think
we were "groupies" or anything, we weren't in it for the sexual
conquest or anything like that, we just liked to meet and get to
know these people. I can honestly say there were hundreds of "famous"
people we met. We went to every concert, everyone from Aerosmith
to Bon Jovi to Ratt to Kiss to whoever...
Some of the highlights:
We spent a couple of days with The Romantics (anyone heard of them)
and they had us flown to NYC to see their gig the following week.
I went on a few dates with a member of Billy Squier's band.
I babysat for Ric Ocasek's son a few times (he's the singer of The Cars)
at his wife's house and met Ric.
I waitressed at my old job at in Inn in Newburyport, MA for Robert
Redford and his wife, Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley (God, she
is so gorgeous! Do we need women around that look like that??
She was really nice, too)
Can't think of anything else right now. All old news.

My daughters Godmother and Godfather are very good friends with
Sam Jones (former Celtic) and I got to socialize with him and several

About 25 years ago I was in Logan airport with my son (then 2 years
old) waiting for my husband to arrive. We got there early because
my son was crazy about airplanes and I wanted him to have time to
watch them. I was busy watching him and not paying much attention
to what was going on around me, when I looked up an noticed people
nudging each other and whispering and pointing at my son and me.
Finally someone approached me and aske me what I was doing at Logan,
I stammered that I was waiting for my husband, the crowd around
us grew and people started to get excited, meanwhile I am busy chasing
after my two year old. Too make a long story short, they all thought
that I was Mrs Casious Clay (Mohamud Ali), and that I was waiting
for him to get off a plane. I was told that my son looked like

I probably was in a better position then most when it comes to meeting
people, I was a waiter for the Monticello Dinner Club in Framingham
MA during it's hay day in the late 60's early 70's.
The most memorable:
Jerry Lewis, a very strong family man.
Diana Ross, she had just broken up with the Supremes and was putting
together a act to use in Vegas. Terrific lady and one hell of a
worker!
Dionne Warwick and the co-star of I Spy, I can't remember his name,
came to see her perform
Todi Fields, very funny person.
Wayne Newton.. Excellent performer.
And a smattering of other performers.
I ran into Hans Conrad down the cape when I was living there, he
was Uncle Tanoose on the Danny Thomas show.
Have run into Steve Grogan several times in the Natick Mall, and
also ended up at his home in Foxboro. I was doing a favor for a

My encounters come from the world of jazz. I met Earl "Fatha" Hines
at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. It was between sets, so he had
a few minutes. His hands were twice as big as mine (and 100 times
as talented). I told him how much I enjoyed his music, and he said
it made him glad to see young people groovin' to an old man's beat.
What a warm and gracious man!
I also got to meet Ella Fitzgerald (regal and mischevious at the
same time), Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, Jo Jones, and Roy
Eldredge. I saw Jo and Roy at Jo's 65th birthday party at the
Smithsonian. Jo was as dedicated as tough as ever - a perfectionist
who's not the easiest guy to work with, but who has *absolute*
musical integrity. Roy said all that trumpet work made him thirsty,
and made many a trip over to the champagne punch. We talked to Roy
and told him we were sorry not to have gotten the chance to talk to
him when he was at Wolf Trap (opening for Ella when we met her).
His comment - "I played my stuff and I left." A night on the town
with Roy would be quite and experience...

A couple of jazz experiences, and some others for the civilians (i.e.
those who don't play or listen to jazz):
Once when I was at Tufts, I got to interview Dizzy Gillespie.
I asked him why he thought he was more famous among the general
public than most bop musicians of his day. He replied, "It's my
face. An ugly face is always easier to remember than a pretty
face."
Later he walked over to the piano and spent about 40 minutes talking
to me about rhythm and harmony. It was one of the best lessons of
my life.
This is another experience I just remebered, but in a way a very
sad one. A few months before Jaco Pastorious died I was in
New York City going
to meet some friends in Greenwich Village. I was late getting there
and they were waiting inside a restaurant on W. 3rd St off 6th Ave
(namely, MCDonald's). I went in and they said "We came in here because
there was a man out there spitting apples on the ground. He said
his name was Jaco and he was a famous bass player (my friends aren't
musicians.) I went outside to investigate, and sure enough there
was this man standing around with some friends acting rather
hyperactive. I asked him if he was Jaco, and he said yes, and I
mentioned I was a pianist, etc. I wanted to say,"what happened to
you", but thankfully it came out as "What are you doing here?"
Before we had much chance to talk,
someone in the street yelled "Hey Jaco!" and he was off and running.
That's the last I heard of him until I heard he'd died. When I got
home that night I looked at an old Weather Report Album cover, and
sure enough it was his face, although a lot younger and healthier
looking than that night
Speaking of Jo Jones (re a couple back), I met his son, Jo
Jones, Jr., also a great drummer, soon after his father died. Turned
out he had been at my mother's house in Queens because my brother, who knew
him through a drummer friend of his, was copying a tape for him. Still
can't believe Jo Jones Jr was in my basement.
A couple of weeks ago I played with a quartet at the reception
following Ray Flynn's State of the City address in Boston. Sure
enough the mayor was there. I could have gone up to talk to him
but all I could think of to say was, "Why are you letting all the
jazz clubs and movie houses in Boston get closed down, destroying
what little culture this city has?" so I kept my mouth shut.
I was walking in Central Park in New York a couple of years ago
and passed the actor Tony Roberts walking his dog. I wasn't sure
at first it was him, because he looked older, then I heard him say, "Good
doggie," and I recognized his voice. I still kick myself for not talking to
him. At least I would have liked to tell him how much I liked him in those
Woody Allen movies.
My ex-boyfriend's father own's a jazz club in New York, and he has
met lots of famous people, including many non-musicians. Next time I
talk to him I will try to get some good stories. I know he has tons.

| I met Bobby Kennedy once when he was running for Senator in NY.
Likewise Jim Buckley (once a US Senator from NY). But politicians
are easy. I've met the whole NH Congressional delegation at one
time or an other. I used to eat dinner regularly with the Majority
leaders of the NY Senate and NY Assembly. (They were both boyhood
friends of my fathers as is the current RC Archbishop of Brooklyn).
I flew on the same plane with the President of Israel about 15 years
ago. We didn't even know he was on the plane until he had departed.
My father has met Presidents Johnson and Nixon. He used to have a
pen that Johnson used to sign some legislation with but it was
destroyed in a fire.
My wife saw Lilly Tomlin in NY once.
We all met M L Carr at the Museum of Science once. He was a real
nice guy. A bunch of kids were asking him for autographs. My wife is
a serious Celtics fan and went over and asked if she could shake his
hand. He shook her hand (and mine) and after exchanging a few words
we left to find that a whole line of adults had replaced the children
behind us.

| There have been so many; my wife's first.
My wife went to Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Nashville,
TN. Well, of course, Elvis was one of her patients. She's so
laid back that nothing phases her. She admits it, but has
nothing else to say about it.
I met Rayfield Wright on 24 September, 1973. I know th exact
date because I was at Love Field in Dallas waiting to pick up
my mother in law. She was coming down to see her new
granddaughter (my first daughter) who was born on the 21st.
Oh yes, he played offensive line for the Cowboys.
I met Jethro Pugh on the golf course in Dallas. He played
defensive line for the Cowboys.
I went to class with Wilbert Montgomery. I also went to school
with Cleotha Montgomery and Johnny Perkins. All three were
fine football players who later played pro ball.
I met James McCracken nd Sondra Warfield (husband and wife)
back in 1983 or 1984. Both are fine opera singers of the
past. James used to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.
I met Colonel Van Winkle in Vietnam in 1967. He had won the
Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism in the Korean War.
Actuall, I more than met him. He and I were together the
better part of the day during an operation his outfit
(2nd Battalion, 1st Marines) and my outfit (K Company,
3rd Battalion, 1st Marines) were on. He was a lot of
fun to be around, and could crack you up at any time.
He didn't seem bothered by the fact that he was a colonel
and I was a corporal.
I guess that's enough for now

| Re Robert Conrad:
In the late sixties, my brother (an avid fisherman) was
fishing in a remote spot in California, when he came across
a gentleman who was trying to fish and obviously didn't know
what he was doing. My brother went over an showed him how to
keep from tangling his line and such. Only after the man
introduced himself did my brother recognize him as Robert Conrad.
He later took my brother out for dinner.
My mom used to babysit for Ralph Nader.
Despite living in NH where you supposedly can't walk down the street
during primary season without being accosted by several Presidential
candidates, the only one I've met was Pete DuPont.
I met several of the people in Tracy Kidder's "The Soul of a New
Machine" a few months before the book came out, at a Halloween
party given by a friend who worked at DG.
I've also met a few people many may not have heard of, but who
are famous in aviation circles: Montaine Mallet (I had to ask
her to turn off the Emergency Locator Transmitter which she had
inadvertently set off during her airshow routine), Bob Weymouth,
Jim Parker and Frank Kingston Smith.

was kind enough to stand with each of my daughters for a

| I grew up in Hopkinton, MA. where they start the marathon each year.
While I was in junior high, I was in the band and we played at the
common each time during marathon day. Pat Paulson was staying in
a trailer parked on a classmates front lawn. Me, in my band uniform
(ugly!) and friends had surounded the trailor waiting for a glimse of
Mr. Paulson and he did finally come out. He patted me on the head.
That turned my off of him, after all, I wasn't a baby!!!
Again while I was in junior high, Ken Hodge was doing a benefit in
Hopkinton. My girlfriend and I help Mr. Hodge down the hill to the
rink because he was wearing his skates at the time. He put an arm
around each of our shoulders and we walked down the hill.
While I was in high school, I worked as a mother's helper. Tom

working. His son, (I forget his name) used to make obscence phone
calls to me!

| When I was about 8, I was in love with Wayne Newton, so my parents
took me to one of his concerts. When he sang "Red Roses for a Blue
Lady", the ushers picked me out (I was probably glowing just to
be at this concert) to bring a rose up to him on stage, which he
took and gave me a kiss. Quite the thrill for an 8-year-old.
My cousin Billy likes to lift weights and works out about 3 times
a week. Once, while he was working out, he started to talke to
this guy who was also working out. It seems the guy was in town
for a visit and didn't know what else to do with his time. My cousin
took him home for dinner, and it wasn't till he introduced him to
his father that he realized he was with Peter Lupus from Mission
Impossible.
My sister-in-law Wendy seems to be always meeting people from the
jet set and such. She met F. Lee Bailey (the famouse lawyer --
isn't he in trouble for something now?) and became friends with
him. She used to go with his family for outings on the family yacht,
and she lived with his mother for a while til she found her own
apartment.
In the past 6 months or so, Wendy has been running a bed and breakfast
in Bill Walton's (the Celtic) house in Boston. Seems like she's
always running into someone famous.

| Wow! The more I thought, the more I remembered! In sortof chronological
order:
Queen Elisabeth II - When I lived in Luxemburg, I managed to get on the
front row of a parade route. She walked right in front of me! I snapped
a photo of her back as she walked away. Ah, fleeting fame....
Summers between college, I worked at the Sheraton in Dover, DE where
I grew up. As the BIG summer event was the Delaware State fair, we had
all the entertainers staaying at the hotel. Chief among my "thrilling"
experiences were having a pass made at me by a very drunk famous black
soul singer, Al somebody whose name I don't remember, AND
making out with one of the Gatlin Brothers (a famous C&W band).
Young and naive (huh!) as I was then, we ended up in his hotel room
where he gave me a lecture/demonstration on how a woman should help
"her man" take off his cowboy boots - all before I escaped (relatively
unscathed!)
I went to the same college K. Hepburn went to. One night I was sitting
at the bells desk ( a rotating dorm responsibility) and she walked into the
dorm with her woman companion and asked me to give her a tour of the new
(read wierd architecture) dorm. She even came into my bedroom and sat on
my bed. She was awfully old, even then, and suffering from Alzheimer?
disease so she shook alittle. I was so in awe I think I blanked out
during the entire affair!
I also went to college with that famous Brat packer, Judd Nelson.
He was a brat back then, too.
Last summer I went to Club Med, and guess who was there? Brooke
Shields, her boyfriend and his mother (chaperone) We never met, but
I looked and listened alot! (She's alot different in person that
I would have expected.)
Also, just last month I went out to dinner with a guy who it
turns out was the International Yachtsman of the Year last year,
James Hatfield. I even saw his picture in one of the sailing magazines
recently (unfortunately, he was just engaged :-( )
Guesss that's it for now. This was fun!!

I forgot one other brush. At Bubonicon 16 (in Albuquerque NM) the
Guests of Honor were Spider and Jeanne Robinson. Late one evening
I ran into a bookstore owner friend of mine and his wife, and he
invited me out for a drink in his van with "someone else" who turned
out to be Spider and Jeanne! I'd brought snacks and I remember
they liked the cheese but turned down the tuna fish. We were drinking
some strange kind of bourbon I'd never heard of called Eagle Rare;
it was pretty good and Spider told a bunch of stories once he got
started. I remember asking him to explain a story about a famous
author who'd written a very trashy story on a bet (which Spider
had described in one of his books) which his fans demanded then
be turned into a series, and the author was never permitted to end
the series; turned out to be Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan. Jeanne
was very quiet, I don't remember her very well. I also remember
walking home (too smozzled to risk driving) at 2AM, 3+ miles!

I happened to go to a high school where 3/4 of the student body
were sons & daughters of the 'rich and famous'. Like Newton Minow's

I went to. And Aerie Crown's grandson was in my gradeschool class.
Mom didn't believe me when I told her my playmate's granddad just
sold the Empire State Building. Charles Percy was a member of my
church. One girl left her junior year 'cause Dad got appointed
Ambassador to Japan.
Best part of the whole deal - my best friend's Dad was manager of
the Chicago Stadium. Back in the late '60's, during the Bobby Orr

the team benches and my friend got Derek Sanderson kicked out of
the game for abusing a fan. He was fun to tease, he reacted so
nicely :-).

I met Maurice Sendak (the children's book illustrator) when he was

She was surprisingly down to earth (nice to know that they're not

When I stayed at a guest house on Nantucket, a group of us were

A few years back I got in line at Wendy's in Framingham and noticed
that this TALL person in front of me was Danny Ainge of Celtics
fame.
Keeping with the Celtic theme, my fiance and I live on the west
coat, but are both from MA and are still Celtics fans. He's a
construction worker and about a year ago he was on a job and noticed
this guy from another company who had on a Celtics hat (very rare
to find people with Celtics hats in Lakers territory!) and when
he looked closer he saw the resemblance this guy had to Dennis Johnson.
Being the kind of outgoing guy he is,he went up to Mr. Celtics and
introduced himself and told him he looked like an older version
of Dennis Johnson. The man corrected him immediately "I don't look
like Dennis - he looks like me!!" It was DJ's dad! My fiance said
he was a real nice guy, and runs that other construction company!
We went back east last Christmas and after mega problems with our
flights we got bumped up to two first class seats - and found out
from our steward that those seats were originally purchased by Chevy
Chase but he had just cancelled.

(Exorcist), Charlton Heston (really a tall guy and very polite-at

He also met Mark Eaton, who if you don't know who he is back East,
he is the guard for Utah Jazz (basketball) and is 7ft something.
My husband is not a small guy (6'2 1/2" and 215 lbs)

My mom tells me I met Shari Lewis (with Lambchop) when I was a tyke,
but I don't recall it...
When I was 15 or so, I was pulled out of the audience at a Steppenwolf
concert (in Bangor, ME) and asked to stand backstage and make sure
nobody else tried to get through. I didn't really meet the band, but
I was sure close to them!
I shook hands with Ed Muskie when he visited our high school. I always
liked Ed, and wished he had made it to president.
Maine Senator Bill Cohen was my mother's lawyer for many years.
The last one I remember is chatting with Pete Seeger backstage after
a concert of his in Montreal. He gave me instructions on how to make
a simple kind of instrument (sort of a recorder) and when I told him
I had also seen his recent concert in Orono, ME, he apologized for
repeating so much material.
Since we seem to be allowing "related brushes", my half-sister runs

Dolenz at Columbia Records. She's met many rock celebrities, and
has dated a few. She also has a crush on skater Brian Boitano, whom
she's met a few times. During a New Year's Eve dinner in Manhattan,

My dad spends a lot of time in NYC, and is friends with Jimmy
Hosbein (sp?) [5 years - Broadway cast of Annie] who now lives with

ago. He can be seen doing commercials on national TV.
A number of friends from my community theater group have done
TV or Radio. Lots of folks on Spencer For Hire, and several TV
mini-series and movies.
My college activities bumped me into all sorts of folks: I
went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and ran into all
kinds of Country Music folks. I was introduced to Amy Grant
(contemporary Christian music) by a high-school friend of hers.
I ran lights for the Hartford Ballet, and went out drinking with
the crew. That night I received an offer to "stop by Hartford and
ask for Ed" if I ever wanted a job. I had a chance to be in Coal
Miner's Daughter.
My girlfriend's family (when I was 15-16) were old friends of
Jim & Ingrid Croce. Jim was dead then, but they had tapes of him
that had been made in their living room. Gina's uncle Joe, was
the author of "Thursday", which Jim recorded.

A bit over a year ago, my son Tommy was staying at the Floating
Hospital for Infants and Children in Boston, being treated for what
was eventually diagnosed as Kawasaki Syndrome. While he was there,
Dr. Benjamin Spock was admitted to the adjoining New England Medical
Center for a heart operation. During his recovery, he asked to meet
with some of the sick children in the playroom upstairs. The
press would be there, and they wanted two kids to pose with Dr. Spock
for a picture. The staff chose Tommy and his roommate, a boy name
Bobby - good choices, since both were photogenic and not so ill
as to be a problem.
Unfortunately, on the morning of the visit, Tommy wasn't up to posing
with Dr. Spock, but we went up there and met him anyway. I shook
hands with him, met his wife, and we exchanged a few words. Bobby

| When I was in 8th grade, I met the real Maria von Trapp (the one
whom the Sound of Music was loosely based on). She didn't give
autographs, unfortunately. She was amazed that I had read the real
autobiography she had written and had not just seen the movie!
I had 3 of Bill Cosby's kids in school (at 2 different schools no
less...), and several delightful conversations with Camille Cosby
(Mrs.) who is bright and beautiful and charming. Bill only visited
school once that I knew of, unannounced, and it was sort of hard to
keep the kids in control!
And I just saw another of my former students in Newsweek last week
-- she is apparently making quite a name for herself as an 18 year
old film actress. It's kind of a shock to see them as adults all
of a sudden!
When I was an intern at the Archive of Folk Song at the Library
of Congress, a delightful older gentleman came into the reading
room and asked me to help him look up some information. I got him
a few books, and chatted with him from time to time throughout the morning.
After he left, the library staff told me that was Charles Seeger
-- father of Pete, Peggy and Mike. He died a month or 2 later.
I talked to Kate Millett after a lecture for a while.
I made Meg Christian lunch one day at the ashram in the Catskills where
she often spends times with her spiritual teacher (everyone at the
ashram has to do seva, service, and I was working in the snack bar that
day). She gave me a piece of candy on another occasion (sigh!), and a
hug on another.
I don't know if anyone remembers Jade and Sarsaparilla from the 70's
(women's jazz duo), but I co-produced a concert in Amherst Mass
featuring them, and had the pleasure of driving them around while they
were in town.
After Ted Kennedy broke his back in the 60's in the plane crash,
my dad pulled his car alongside an ambulance at a light and saw
Ted in the back being transferred between hospitals.
It was interesting reading through this string -- I realized how
many famous people I don't even know of since I don't watch TV,
listen to pop music or follow sports. (I've got my hands full
following folk and women's music!)

| Let's see. I have been active in the Boston Marathon so I have met
and worked with a lot of "famous" people there. Bob Lobel, Bill
Rodgers, Joan Benoit, Ray Flynn, Guy Morse (Director), Ibraham
Hussein, Orlando Pizzaloto, Juma Ikanga, Ingrid Kristainson, Rosa Mota, Steve
Jones, Lisa Larson, Lisa Martin, and all the top marathon runners.
All the runners as a general rule are just folks like you and I.
My uncle has some "famous" people at his 50 birthday party - Kevin
White, Bob Crane, Billy Bulger.
I went to high with some famous kids - Jeff Carey - his godfather was
Hugh Carey, former governer of NY and others who fathers were
presidents of company and such.
A cousin of mine is a VP at Digital.
I saw Vanna White being made up at NBC studios - she didn't look that
great up close in case you were wondering.
I wonder about this fame stuff. Its interesting to see how we react
around famous people and vice versa.

| When I was around 14, my family was on vacation in New York City. We
ate lunch at the UN Delegate's dining room. Sitting at the next table
were Elenor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, and Nol Coward. My brother
(younger) got their autographs on a menu. I still regret being too
proud to ask.
During the time I lived in Sweden, I used to sneak into rock concerts
with a camera and (home-made) press credentials. Ended up going out
to dinner with Jim Morrison and (different occasion) the Everly Brothers.
Nice folks. Not freaky off stage.
During last year's New York Marathon, I passed by Boston Mayor Ray Flynn
at the 25th mile. Said, "Hi Ray, what the fuck you doing here?" (I was
suprised that he was running so slow: this became my worst marathon ever.)
Ray, looking like death warmed over, did not seem to be in the mood for
a pleasant conversation with a fellow athlete.
Of course, I'm famous, too. With the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue
in mind, women looking for pictures of cute men wearing very little clothing
need only look for my photo on the wall at any of a half-dozen Boston bars,
including the Bull and Finch, The Eliot Lounge, and Crossroads.

| In high school English, I sat behind Frank Mann, whose name preceded my
maiden name. His little sister became lead singer for Til Tuesday.
When I was an undergraduate, one of the basketball stars at my
school was Marc Iavaroni. Marc had a job bagging groceries at
the local A&P (which says something for the scholarships back then),
and he bagged my groceries once. In the early 80's he played for
the Phildelphia 76ers. (Only serious hoop junkies will probably
remember him.)
In 1976, I waitressed at a banquet for Queen Elizabeth II at
the University of Virginia. Only men were allowed to serve at the
table where the Queen and Prince Philip sat. I never learned
if this is royal protocol or the Queen's preference, but I
envied the two guys who got the job. I got to wait on the
Mayor of Charlottesville. There were Secret Service agents all
around the balcony overhead: I wondered if whether they'd blow
me away if I dropped a plate. All the servers had strict
instructions not to stare at the Queen, though being an Anglophile
I sneaked a number of surreptitious looks. We all went through a
security check and a *rehearsal* for the luncheon, but it was worth
it. I saved the flowers and a menu from one of the tables afterwards.
(Queen Elizabeth roses, don't you know? Still have the potpourri I
made from them.)

When I was a student at Burdett in Boston, Joanne Woodward was filming
"See How She Runs". To get to classes, we had to walk through the area
they were filming on many occasions and several students were actually
in the film because of this. One morning, I found myself speaking to
this gentleman and later realized that it was Paul Newman who I'd been
conversing and shaken hands with.
At the age of nine, I became good friends with the niece of my mother's
best friend. Little did we know then that she would become successful.
She is Lita Ford of the Lita Ford Band in Beverley Hills.
My mother and niece once had an interesting experience in Logan
Airport. My mother was flying my niece back to Atlanta when a group of
musicians sat down next to them. My niece was wearing a KISS T-shirt
when one of the band members spoke to her and said that KISS was good,
too, but when she got home to tell her friends she met RUSH. They took
the same flight to Atlanta which made my niece's day.

Most of the people have been mentioned earlier.
Politics: Talked to Jimmy Carter on a flight from Boston to
Baltimore in 1974, when he was a mostly unknown governor, and
I've still got a handwritten letter he sent me. Saw HM Lizzy
when she was in Boston in '76 and have a few decent photos of her
cruising down Hanover St in Dukakis' convertible.
Jet setters: Jackie Kennedy and I were on the same 7am American
flight from Boston to Laguardia some (many) years ago. I was in
the coach section, and she was not.
Sports: Was on three Sports Huddle shows with Andelman-Witkin-
McCarthy, broadcasting from the beautiful Hotel Bradford. Played
golf with Derek Sanderson before he became a jerk.
Others: My Dad knew Princess Summerfallwinterspring, and I got to
be in the Peanut gallery on Howdy Doody twice.
My uncle Murray D., who ran a delicatessen, had a affair going
for years with Ilonka Patotsky, who had previously been a "close
friend" (if you get my drift) of James Michael Curley. In his
autobiography, (which is a classic, btw), Curley refers to the
bemoled Ms Patotsky as "Countess Ilonka".
Was in a cab with Richard Burton from the Ritz Carlton Hotel to
the Shubert Theatre. He rode in the back seat; I was in the
front.

to insure my cultural education by partaking of free concerts given
by artists at the McDowell Colony in Peterborough. I remember one
summer evening listening to a young classical pianist named Leonard
Bernstein who went on to find pretty steady employment...
My nephew is a "gaffer" and has worked on movie sets with some pretty
famous people. He was with Katherine Hepburn, Diana Canova and
Mason Adams (Lou Grant's old boss) when they were making a made
for TV movie in China several years ago. Diana gave my nephew's
wife (who was along as wardrobe mistress) a beautiful parasol used
in the movie as a keepsake.
And if my son was contributing to this note, he would be able to
say that Arnold Palmer once told him to "get out of the way, kid"
when he stood too close at a golf tournament.

| Ever since I can remember I've been involved in theatre.
My ex was a regional theatre actor and I was a box office
manager so have rubbed elbows with a few of the rich-and-
famous. I'll try not to make this too boring.
At age 17 I spent a summer managing a box office in Central
City, Colorado. There I met Nancy Dusault of "Too close
for Comfort" fame and Celeste Holm. Also, the Royal Shakes-
peare Company from Startford came in so I got to meet
dame Peggy Ashcroft and Sir Michael Redgrave (Vanessa and
Lynn's daddy). He was so out of it most of the time that the
other actors had to literally push him around the stage, yet
somehow he managed to deliver all his lines beautifully and on-
cue.
In college I met and chatted with John Housman (of the Paper
Chase and Silver Spoons). What an intelligent far-seeing
gentleman!
Professionally I met and worked with Werner Klemperer (of
Hogan's Heroes) and Alan Schneider (who directed Who's
Afraid of Virginia Wolff on Broadway and won a Tony for
same). Also met and had dinner with Gregory Peck while
at the LaJolla Playhouse (where he is a founding member).
Also at the LaJolla playhouse I met Patrick McNee (of the
Avengers) and Kurt Weil of Threepenny Opera.
At the Colorado Shakespeare Festival I met Buddy Hackett
and William Shattner (whose daughters were both graduating
that summer). My parents were good friends with some
people who went to school with Robert Redford at the
University of Colorado. They all got together for dinner
when "Bob" would come into town. (My Mom says he's not
nearly as good looking in person and tends to talk environ-
mental issues adnauseum.)
At the Oregon Shakespearean Festival I watched the Super Bowl
with Kyle McLaughlin (of Dune and Blue Velvet). He makes an
incredible marinara sauce. I also met Annette O'Toole at a
party (her husband, Bill Geissinger was in the company). Our
daughters are a few months apart so we talked babies all after-
noon. (She was Superman's high school sweetheart in one of
those Superman movies, also played the tutor in One on One
with Robby Benson.)
Oh, also auditioned for and worked with Eric Christmas who
plays bit roles in movies (psychiatrist in Harold and Maude,
principal in Porky's). Funny man but a bit of a space cadet.

stay with said great aunt/uncle for the duration of the tournament.
Jane always let me walk right down the fairway with her (I mean

my own golf game when I would go with her to the practice driving
range. I still have some of the golf balls and gloves that she
gave me (and that was over 20 years ago!) Maybe I should be putting

I consider my best friend famous. Her name is Kristine Kinney and
I'm sure that none of you have heard of her, but if any of you have

she received the Rookie of The Year award for Division I. And she
has been averaging over 20 points a game. She has received the
MVP award each year since. Just 2 weeks ago, she hit 2000 points
which is the all time scoring record for UNH for women and men !!
and she still had approximately 11 games to go from that point!
She participated in the Olympic Festival during the summer of '87

| O.K. - not a big deal, but last November, I got on a flight from
Calgary to Vancouver, and who is sitting in the first row (no 1st class
- just an economy-only 737) but Richard Dean Anderson of MacGyver fame.
He was just recovering from a back injury, so he didn't look too
comfortable, and he looked older than he does on the tube. However,
that (injury, not age!) didn't prevent him from smiling at anyone who
recognized him, or amiably signing autographs for those few (3 kids)
who asked.
Some people claim Canadians are known to be more shy and/or respectful
of others' privacy and will usually smile, but seldom stare at, start a
conversation with, or ask for autographs from a famous person - I think
it's too broad a generalization, as most generalizations are - which
reminds me: exactly 44% of all Statistics are inaccurate! :-) :-) :-)
Not too surprising to see him on the flight actually, since MacGyver is
filmed in Vancouver, and his favorite NHL hockey team is the Calgary
Flames, who (gloat, gloat) currently have the best record in the
NHL this season and could go all the way!

When I was a teenager, I went to a summer theater in New Hampshire
and met Patty Duke backstage after the show. She told me she liked
*MY* haircut.
My parents used to have season tickets to the Bruins and became
friends of Ed Westfall. He and his wife came to our house in
Framingham one night for a post-game celebration. Dad knew we kids
would be so upset if we didn't get to meet Ed, so he had Ed wake
us each up, give the girls a kiss (of course I had braces at the
time, quite unromantic), and give us each an autographed poster
of him in his uniform. I thought I was pretty cool.
At college I waitressed for school functions, and met Ellen Burstyn
and Linus Pauling at a symposium, but I can't seem to remember what
is was for. That's what 10+ years will do to you.
Before Digital, I worked for Eastern Airlines as a Flight Attendant
and met (ie saw) some interesting folks: the band Motley Crue (aptly
named I thought, although my brother was quite impressed), Billy
Carter (he drank black coffee, no beer), Karen Black, and Claude
Akins.
Finally, last summer Linda Evans came to my mother's house at Lake
Winnipesaukee in N.H. Linda's sister lives nearby and has become
a friend of our family. Her name is Charlie. Charlie knew that
my brother (27) has an immense crush on Linda, so she asked if he
wouldn't mind taking Linda for a ride in his boat!! He walked on
air for a week, cleaned and polished the boat, picked out his outfit,
etc. etc. Linda is more gorgeous in person and is so, well, normal.
She seems totally unaffected by her fame and success. We all sat
around and talked about the writers' strike, our favorite scenes
from Dynasty etc. We took some pictures of the family, and dog,
with Linda, and she sent my brother a beautiful picture that she
signed with a cute note.
Gee, can I think of any more?

| Being a science fiction fan, means you get to meet a lot of science
fiction writers. As I was registering for my first-ever science
fiction convention, I felt an arm encircle my waist; it belonged
to Isaac Asimov. The next year I did some stoneware sculptures of
Pierson's Puppeteers for the Art Show, since Larry Niven was Guest
of Honor. As I was arranging them, someone came up and started
discussing their functional plausibility. I had noticed some problems
with them, and was about to speak when I realized that I didn't know
what Larry Niven looked like, and I didn't want to badmouth his
critters to his face. I sneaked a peak at the badge: Hal Clement. Whew!
(Later I met Larry, of course. We now hug and smooch whenever we meet.)
You meet a lot of famous non-writers too. I remember listening to
John Schoenherr (He once painted a tiger for the Shah of Iran.) and
Jack Gaughn explaining to `George Richard' the best technique for
painting crescent planets. When I told this to Wendy Pini ("Elfquest")
she went green. "Oh, I hope they didn't try to change his style!"
(I reassured her.) I met Jim Frenkel just after he had started
Bluejay Books, and remarked that I had heard of him. He said he'd
heard of me too. (!) Judy-Lynn delRey, the founder of DelRey Books,
was kind enough to remember me the second time we made contact.
(Yeah, yeah, I know. Nobody forgets "Broomhead".) Jack Chalker,
the owner of Mirage Press, (He writes some, too.) auctioned off the
above-mentioned stoneware pieces.
Among my fellow sf fans are Peggy Kennedy, who was on "Jeopardy"
some months ago, and did quite well. That's not surprising; her
father was Norbert Wiener. My friend Ben Yalow's mother won the
Nobel Prize. I once got a printout as a thank you from Richard
Stallman. My good friend Tony Lewis has a certain notoriety. He
wrote "M.I.T. Ph.D. M-O-N-E-Y" (to the tune of the Mickey Mouse Club
song, of course) and many other Tech songs, which are now attributed
to Anonymous.
Tony even gave me his permission to hit John McNamara, when John
and I were working together. This was after I worked for Tom
Stockebrand, who took great delight in complimenting my legs and
watching me turn bright red. Long after that, I walked into my
office one day, to find a strange man in an embroidered shirt using
my phone -- Gordon Bell.
Growing up in Rhode Island, I went to school with Channing Gray, who
is now a newscaster. My orthodontist has turned into the mayor of
Newport. My family has been in the catering business for a looong
time, so my father and brother have met presidents and princes,
admirals and ambassadors. (My brother delights in hassling Secret
Service agents.) Ed Begley (Sr.) once ate in the tearoom -- before
his Oscar -- and was so thrilled at being recognized that he dashed
out to his car so that he could provide autographed photos for
everyone. A distant cousin was once on the cover of "Time", and a
former uncle was a co-inventor of the silicon transistor.
I also knew the translator of "I Am Curious -- Yellow" before he
became that famous pin-up guy. ;-)

My drama teacher in High School had Jon Voight as a student one summer at
a summer stock theater, but didn't think he had any acting talent, so
assigned him to painting sets. Next time he saw him was in the film "Dr.
Zhivago."
My boyfriend and I went to the movies last weekend and afterwards he peed
in the urinal next to Art Buchwald who was doing the same. The film wasn't
too bad either.
I stopped to tie my shoe in the hallway one day at work and Ralph Nader
tripped over me. (He worked down the hall).

453.89 | A trip down memory lane ... | TOOK::FAIRBANKS | | Mon Feb 27 1989 17:04 | 115 |
| Wow, it's amazing how many "famous" people I've come in contact with in my
life once I thought about it! These are the ones that come to mind:
1. I used to live in NYC and ran into Soupy Sales in a bagel place
once--literally. The guy he was with thought it was funny and
said "Do you recognize this gentleman?" (I was only 18, felt
like a little kid and was dying of embarrassment.) He introduced
us and we shook hands--then I got out of there as fast as I could!
2. I have a picture in my office of myself and Jacko, that obnoxious
Energizer battery guy. He was at the Georgia Tech campus doing
something for MTV when I was at grad school there; I just went
up to him and asked him if he'd have a picture taken with me. He
was funny (not to mention HUGE!)--he said "Sure, darlin'--wrap your
arms around a REAL man!"
3. Kirk McCaskill, who pitches for the California Angels, was a friend
of mine at University of VT; I dated his roommate (who plays hockey
now for the Minnesota North Stars and was the last person cut from
the Olympic hockey team that beat the Russians.) Kirk is one of
the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet; it was fun watching him
pitch in the World Series on television a couple of years ago!
4. Beth Heiden, Eric's sister and an Olympic athlete herself,
was in my 8 AM math class my sophomore year at UVM (she made it
to class a lot more often than I did ;-)).
5. A TV movie that is now shown every year at Christmas time (I
can't remember the name of it, but it's about a department store
that closes or something--a pretty awful movie) was shot about
6-7 years ago in Burlington, VT, right around the block from my
apartment. The papers in Burlington at the time were carrying
stories about rumors that Tom Selleck was in the movie [he wasn't],
so I went down to the set and hung out with my camera in hopes of
seeing him. One of the grips noticed me hanging around and we
started talking. He told me that Tom Selleck wasn't there BUT
that he was on his way to go get lunch for the stars who WERE in
the movie--Lee Remick and Angela Lansbury. So I went with him
to a Chinese restaurant downtown and then he took me inside the
house they were shooting the movie in and let me deliver the
Chinese food to them! (exciting, huh?!) I shook hands with both
of them, but they were very busy and pretty much just grabbed the
food and took off. Oh well :-)
6. I shook hands with both Ed Koch and Mario Cuomo, on separate
occasions, when they were running against each other for mayor of
NYC back in the 70's. They'd stand outside subway tunnels in the
morning, stumping for votes with commuters.
7. When I lived in New York City, Studio 54 was in its heyday--lines
of people waiting outside just to watch the celebrities come and
go. A cosmetologist friend of mine came to NY to take a seminar
with Mark Traynor, who is the guy who created Farrah Fawcett's
famous hairstyle. He took his whole class (and me, thanks to my
friend!) to Studio 54 one night--it was a riot walking right to
the front of the line and being immediately let inside, and seeing
all the celebrity-watchers trying to figure out who the heck we
were. What a strange place that was, BTW ... I didn't see anyone
famous inside, though.
8. I met Jerry Seinfeld (of David Letterman fame) in a small Atlanta
comedy club. After he finished his show that night, he came out
and mingled with the folks (well, actually the women) for awhile.
I felt like I already knew him because I have a friend who looks
exactly like him (who is also a comedian), so that was really
strange.
9. I stood next to Steve Lundquist (the Olympic swimmer) as he was being
introduced to the crowd at a makeup show in Atlanta last year; he and
Tristan Rogers of General Hospital were sort of "featured attractions"
to draw people to the show. (I was too chicken to talk to him, though;
lots of braver girls asked him to pose with them for pictures and he
was glad to oblige.)
10. My sorority sponsored a charity ice show for UVM every year (mainly
because one of the girls in our house was a champion skater herself).
I helped Elaine Zayak (remember her?--World Champion figure skater a
few years ago) change costumes during the show, and she was
at a party I went to later that night (at Kirk McCaskill's apt.!)
She acted like a spoiled brat the whole evening ...
11. Sam Snead stayed at the Holiday Inn Marlboro during the Digital
pro golf tournament-thing in 1983; I had just started working for
DEC and was staying there while I looked for an apartment in Mass.
The desk clerk introduced us one night when I went down to pick
up my mail.
12. Anybody ever heard of William Kunstler, the attorney? (Kind of
up there with F. Lee Bailey) ... he defended Kristina Berster,
the German woman arrested in VT and accused of being a Russian spy
a few years ago. I was working as a legal secretary in Burlington
at the time and got to type some of his legal briefs on that case,
since he used our office as his local headquarters. (That one is
only exciting if you are into Perry Mason and stuff like I used
to be :-))
And last but not least (for now, anyway--I have a feeling I've forgotten
some) ...
13. Last year I was sitting at a table at a club in Atlanta with some
friends and we looked over and discovered that Dominique Wilkins
and some friends were at the next table. My friend Jim, who is
the biggest sports nut I know, practically had a conniption; he
asked the waitress to buy Dominique a cranberry juice (because
Dominique doesn't drink), but she told us that he was cranky that
night and didn't want to be disturbed.
Gee, if I ever got to go on David Letterman's "Brush with Greatness", I
wouldn't know which one to pick!!! This was fun ...
Laurie
p.s. Re: .60--Hey, John, you forgot to mention that John Sununu was
one of your college professors and that he wouldn't let you take an
exam once because you were late!! (Hope I got that right :-))

| Singers and songwriters Jonathan and Carolina Edwards were neighbors of
ours when we lived in New Hampshire. They came driving around shortly
after they moved there and we talked to them quite a few times at
dinner parties at other neighbors houses. They eventually got divorced
and sold their farm.
Shelley Hack was in my Freshman English class in college. She was a
model then (this was way before Charley's Angels).
For anyone in Western Massachusetts - Ray Hershel, one of the news
anchors for Channel 40, is my cousin.

pretty impressed, but I hadn't heard of her.
* Tip O'Neil lives near my folks and goes to the same church.

of the water off the Cape when John John was a little tyke.
The secret service caught up with my bro and his friends really
quick.

Cincinatti Reds.
* I got to meet Cardinal Humberto Mederios when he came to my college.
* I saw Joe (mr coffee) DiMaggio in LaGuardia.
* I played b-ball in the Boston Garden and was one of many girls
who tried chasing Jo Jo White into the locker room.
(I was in High School! What can I say?)
* I went to school with James Spader, who played in "Less Than
Zero."

still playing. WOW, is he tall, good looking, too!
Then I met Terry O'Reilly at Digital, too, when I was working in
ICO. I have a photo of us together in the lobby.
You just never know who'll walk through the Digital doors!

| My choir director at the church I grew up in was Robert Warfield.
His brother is William Warfield who sang "Old Man River" in
"Show Boat", and was Porgy in "Porgy and Bess". I met him after
he sang in "Elijah" in Rochester. Wonderful voices (both of them).
I believe other Warfield's are also in show business.

| Last week, my wife and I stayed at the same inn as Pierce Brosnan (with his
wife, kid, and babysitter). Didn't actually meet him, of course. Unlike some
entertainers, he looks exactly the same in person as on the tube (with the
possible exception of the scan lines...).

My brother-in-law is an actor and has played bit parts in Dallas,
Dynasty, General Hospital and Superior Court (among others).
His name is Blake Conway.
This last Monday was the debut of a Post Oat Flakes tv commercial
he is in. I haven't seen it yet.
Let me know if anyone catches the commercial.
FYI...Blake is tall, dark haired with a narrow face, 44 years old.
Not sure if he still has his moustache. My mother-in-law
thinks he looks like a cross-between Sam Elliott and Tom
Selleck. You be the judge.

| Some of the Celtics were on my flight from Charlotte Wednesday morning.
I have no ideas which ones, not being a basketball fan.
Some episodes of _Dallas_ (when Jock was having a brush with cancer
or something) were filmed at the hospital where my mother works.
She rode in an elevator with some of the actors once.

When we were on our way back from Florida last April, we
stopped in Washington D.C. to catch our next flight. We took
like a tram to get to our gate. The Celtics were on board.
Before we boarded the next plane, we got pictures of Larry Bird,
Robert Parish and I had my picture taken with Danny Ainge. At the
time my younger sister was in love with Danny, so I had to get a
picture to rub it in...she ended up getting the negative from me
and had it blown up - when she received the picture, she cut me
out of it and put Danny in a key chain...

| Not as exciting as some, but here are mine...
- I met Garrick Utley (news commentator) at a wedding (my cousin
Debbie married his brother Jon)
- I had brunch at One Fifth Avenue in New York years ago and
Gavin McLeod was at the next table
- When Ted Kennedy was running for something he visited the
insurance company I was working at then and he walked past
my desk
- I was on a flight from Boston to LA and Geraldo Rivera sat
two seats back
- I've seen and stood very close to Jay Leno a few times at
Dallas/Ft. Worth airport...one of these days I may get the
nerve to say hello. He's very nice about signing autographs
from what I've noticed.
- I saw Robin Leach in the Grill at the Ritz Carlton in Houston
(formerly the Remmington Hotel)
- I've stayed at the Four Seasons Boston the same time that
Michael J. Fox and his wife have...didn't get to see them.

My neighbor was in a Genessee beer commercial a few years ago.
Up until last year (did Slap Maxwell get cancelled?) he was the
boss guy on Slap Maxwell story, the tall guy who was Slap's boss
at the newspaper. His name is Brian Smiar.
It was funny, I had watched the show many times and hadn't realized
it was him until the middle of the season. I guess I just didn't
expect it.
An *Amesbury* person, wow!

| I shook hands with Jimmy Carter in 1975 when he was campaigning
in New Hampshire (and I was in college).
My husband and I sat with Huey Lewis's band on a flight from
Boston to LA on our way to Hawaii. Lee Thornburg (sp?) was the
one I sat next to. He and most of the other band members were
the old Tower of Power.
I used to babysit for Charlie Long of the Boston Patriots
in Framingham when I was a kid.
When I was a girl scout, we had an outing at the old Monticello
dinner theatre on Rt. 9 in Framingham (behind where Pier 1
Imports is now). We went to see Jerry Lewis. We sat right
smack dab in front of the stage. I didn't realize it at the time,
but I was coming down with the flu. Jerry thought it would be
fun to pick on us girl scouts, me in particular. About 30
seconds into his schpiel, I vomitted on the floor right in
front of him. He made some silly comment that he didn't think
his routine was *THAT* repulsive. I don't think I've ever been
that embarrassed since...
I watched a beer commercial being filmed at a restaurant in
Maynard a few years ago. I believe it was at May Ling's before
it became May Ling's. Don't know if the commercial ever aired.
My husband didn't realize he was on a plane with most of the
Celtics one night. As he got off the plane and went into the
terminal, he realized it because of the mob scene.
Jim Morris is a comedian/impressionist who became famous for
his Reagan impersonation. He's been on Hollywood Squares, had
his own special on cable, had a stage show called "Rapmaster Ronnie"
in Boston, was interviewed on t.v. several time by Joyce Kulhawik
(WBZ TV4 in Boston), was on Carson, was in Newsweek several weeks
ago, and will be on HBO on the 18th in the 3rd round of some comedy
special (can't think of the name!)
He was a good friend of mine from junior high all through high
school. We used to "hang around" with the same bunch of kids.
When we were in the 7th grade, tons of kids would gather in the
courtyard at the school, and Jim would do his impressions of all
the teachers. We all used to say that he'd be the next Rich Little...
It's such a kick to see his face everywhere now... I wish I could
see him in person because it would be so much fun to talk to him
after 14 years.
RE: .84 -- I had the same dream about Dan Fogelberg playing at
my wedding! I settled for insisting that the band
learn some of his songs...!
