We have seen a strange problem with FrontPage 97 and I was wondering
if anyone else had seen this.
One of our web authors opens a web site and the documents are all
displayed in a sans serif font (though FP97 says that it is times new
roman). This font is not the font that the documents were originally
created in. If she tries to change the font to what she wants,
"times new roman", she is unable to. I am able to open the exact
same document and it displays correctly in "times new roman".
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Kathleen

| Also, the FrontPage 97 editor is not truly WYSIWYG. That is, fonts,
style files, etc., are not represented. You have to go to the
"preview" mode to see them. The preview mode basically runs your
browser and loads the page into it, so you'll see it as your browser
sees it.
And different browsers represent things in different ways. I don't
believe that Netscape understands style files, for example. So if I
use a style file to set fonts and such, then MSIE will work fine, and
Netscape will revert to the default font.

I got my Not For Resale copy on Friday for $30.00....
Is this business crazy, or what?
Anyway, I was under the impression that there was a discussion bot included
in FP97...I found none.
Questions:
1. Did I get scr**ed?
2. Are there any collections of bots on the web?
Also, I was really impressed with the image editor...many nice effects, and
real easy to use.

From FP 97 Help:
To create a discussion group
A discussion group is a FrontPage web. that supports interactive
discussions of topics by users. Users submit topics by entering text in a
form, search the group using a search form, and access articles using a
table of contents.
To create a discussion group:
1 In the FrontPage Explorer, select File: New: FrontPage Web.
2 In the New FrontPage Web dialog box, select Discussion Web Wizard
and click OK.
3 In the Discussion Web Wizard dialog box, enter the Web server and
FrontPage web name of your discussion group, and click OK.
4 If you are prompted for your name and password, enter them and
click OK.
5 In the Discussion Web Wizard, select the main features of your
discussion and click Next.
A Table of Contents contains hyperlinks to the discussion
topics.
And on and on...

BTW, did you know that you can put a web under version control using
Visual SourceSafe? There's a field that you can specify the SourceSafe
project in which to do revision control. I haven't tried it, but I was
pleasantly surprised to see the capability in FrontPage 97! Revision
Control has been one of the problem areas in web maintenance.

Also, I have a notice in the bottom right of the status bar of the FP editor.

I'm not sure if it's the same problem, but I noticed that if you have
something like this:
<ul>
<li><p>some text</p></li>
<ul>
FrontPage sticks an extra <li> in the nested list. This sort of thing
is generated by Word 97's save-to-HTML, though I also found tat FP
would do it on its own sometimes. The problem is that if you delete
the extra bullet or list in the FP editor, it puts it back! The
solution I found was to hand-edit the source to remove the </li>.

I click in the table, and click Paste.
At work, this text is entered with hard returns at the end of each

At home, this text is entered without an returns, and is just one big

I've spent a bunch of time looking at FrontPage Editor setups, and have

| Frontpage includes an editor, but is more than that. It also
maintains a map or "web" diagram of all your pages and the links
between them, can keep all those links right if you rename a file,
etc. It can also check the links off your "web", though I havn't
quite gotten this to work 100% with our firewall/proxy server. It
also can "publish" a web to another server, which I use extensively.
I build all my pages locally on my own system, then publish them to
the "real" server (which in your case could be your ISP if they've
got the FP extensions loaded).
The best bet is to find someone at your site who's using FP and have
them show it to you.

Personal Web-Page Editors
Microsoft Corp.
Microsoft FrontPage 97
Edward Mendelsohn
Microsoft FrontPage 97 ($149 list) surpasses all rivals in its ability
to create complex, interactive Web sites with just a few mouse
clicks. Microsoft's combination HTML editor and Web site
manager uses a wizard interface to build sites so tightly integrated
that you can change the text and graphic banner on top of one
page and let the program propagate the change throughout your
site. Less expensive programs (such as the free AOLpress) are
equally adept at creating visually complex Web sites, but no other
program lets you create a Web site with the same depth of
automation, consistency, and convenience as FrontPage.
Even if you know nothing about HTML syntax or CGI scripts, you
can use FrontPage's WebBot feature to implement such
advanced functions as forms processing, discussion groups, and
dynamically created Web pages. FrontPage is less helpful when
you want to break out of its structure, but its minor inconveniences
are outweighed by its automation and elegance.
FrontPage 97 consists of three main applications: FrontPage
Explorer, which lets you manage the elements on your Web site;
the FrontPage Editor, which lets you create HTML pages; and a
unique desktop Web server, which lets you build and test your site
with real HTTP links (though FrontPage also allows you to save
HTML pages as files to your hard disk). After the program's wizard
creates a set of pages with the style and structure you choose, the
FrontPage Explorer window displays a tree-structured view of your
entire Web site, with all links and graphics. From Explorer, you
can spell-check all documents on your Web site and verify the
site's links. When you click on one of the icons in this window, the
corresponding page opens in the FrontPage Editor, which looks
and acts like Microsoft Word.
The FrontPage Editor lets you import any word processing
document or HTML file. An optional window lets you modify the
raw HTML code of the current page. You can import graphics in
virtually any format, and the Editor automatically converts them to
.GIF or JPEG files. A toolbar lets you create client-side image
maps very easily by drawing shapes on a graphic. The included
Microsoft Image Composer can create sprites with advanced
animated effects.
FrontPage creates tables and forms effortlessly. As soon as you
insert any form element on a page, the program builds a form
around it. The program can create frames, but it displays only the
skeleton of the frames, not the content of the frames as they will
appear in a browser. FrontPage compiles a list of unfinished
tasks required to complete your Web site, and it opens the pages
that need work as soon as you click on a task.
When you publish your Web site, FrontPage determines whether
you're publishing to a server that uses FrontPage extensions; if
not, the program launches the included Web Publishing Wizard.
FrontPage even lets you upload only changed files to your site. To
use some of the server-side WebBots--such as the
discussion-forum WebBot--the Web server you're posting to must
have the FrontPage extensions installed.

45.52 | Odd FrontPage Editing Problems | TNPUBS::J_GOLDSTEIN | Run over on the Info Highway | Thu May 15 1997 16:17 | 25 |
| I'm having some odd problems with FrontPage and was wondering if anyone
else has run into these.
1. If I have a web open and I delete a folder, I can no longer access
the open web. Instead I get HTTP: Error 500 - which suggests that
there's an internal web server problem. I also have this problem if I
delete a different web on my system (doesn't matter if the problem web
is open or not). The only way I've been able to
fix the problem is to import a web (any web, it doesn't matter). The
really odd thing is that this affects only ONE web. I have other webs
on the system that I can still open.
2. When adding my own HTML markup (for example a piece of JavaScript
code) in a file and then copy the little icon displayed on the page,
FrontPage adds extra line spacing between each line. This is getting
worse and worse. It seems that no matter how many times I delete the
extra line spaces, FrontPage keeps adding them in.
Am I being haunted by a FrontPage demon??

Hi,
I just received an Alpha PWS 433a and am running NT 4.0 SP2 and FX!32
V1.1 (b0148-001).
I've installed FrontPage 97 using the install wizard and all appears to
go well during the installation. However, when I attempt to open a
web using the FrontPage explorer (the web is on an nt server
running IIS V3.0) I receive the following error
"System exception: access violation".
I know that I have the correct permissions to access this web 'cause I
can still connect to it via FrontPage 97 installed on an intel box...
Here's the funky part. It HAS worked 1 time for me. I was able to
open this web once. But can not get it to work all the time (or even
most of the time).
Any ideas? Is there anyone out there successfully running FrontPage 97
on an alpha box?
Thanks,
Kathleen
