774.0. "Zinging da Blues" by AD::GIBSON () Mon Jun 20 1988 13:30

    The Blues are in. Finnally out of nowhere they have arrived. Not
    one word of there travels up the coast from the guys down south.
    Thanks!

    We were out jigging for Cod yestrday off Halibut point and had
    quite a few marks on the dephfinder that were too large to be Mac's.
    Unfortunetly we were not rigged for blues and went without, While
    further out on Old Scantum the fishing boat Ridgerunner succeeded
    in hauling in two Beautys!

    The fish were running deep from 30 to 60 ft or more , So next trip
    out wil call for Drails or downriggers. The bait du jour was the
    old reliable- Rebel diving minnow, with green being the choice of
    the discriminating Bluefish.

    So its time to break out the old louieville slugger and get out
    the pliers.

    If anyone fishes Blues? Keep us posted as to there whereabouts.
    We'll be on ch 16 "Rainbow Chaser"

    I'd be interested in going blue fishing with anyone who wants to
    take me. I don't have a boat or a car 'cause I just graduated Umass
    and moved here from Amherst. I am mainly a fresh-water fisherperson
    but I caught a 6 lb blue last summer on the cape with 8lb line,
    a 6.5ft ugly stick and Shimano reel. Took 45 minutes to get 'em
    out of the water and ever since I've been dying to go back. I've
    since picked up a stiffer rod but haven't had an excuse to pick
    up a bigger reel. I'd be willing to bring the beer...

774.5Blues from shore?DR::HAIGHWed Jun 22 1988 11:1618
    2 Questions re Blues:

    Is it too early yet to go Blue fishing from shore?

    Where are a couple of good places do go shore fishing for anything,
    including blues.

    Why, my neighbour and his son and I want to go and do some surf
    casting and I have never done it before. I also want to try out
    my new Fathers day rod.

    We live in Nashua NH and plan a couple of day trips and may be a
    weekend camping and fishing.

    Thanks,

    David.

    Hi David,

    I live in Nashua also and I always go Blue fishing at Gloucester,
    MA. I heard Plum Island is also good for Blues. But I have never
    been there. I don't know how good it is for parking either.

    As to NH, I have not being able to find a good spot for Blues.
    Most of the sea shore state parks are closed after 8:00 pm.

    The Gloucester coast guard light house is a good spot for Blue fishing
    from shore. You can park your car very close to the sea wall.
    I go there with my friends almost every weekend since three weeks ago.
    I caught a lot of Polluck and Mackerel, but I have not spot any Blue
    fish yet. I will try again this weekend.

    If you want to know how to get there, I'd like to show you. Maybe
    we can go together.

    BTW, if anybody knows any good spot in NH or ME for Blue fishing
    from shore, please let me know.
    Thx.

774.7Mouth of the merrimacTOOK::SWEETCapt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or BustThu Jun 23 1988 17:539
    No problem parking around the mouth of the merrimac in early am
    or around dusk. I usually park down by the old cg station near the
    dock were the captains fishing parties go out. It is about a
    1/2 mile walk to the jetty through the sand, not an easy one with
    alot of gear. There are also small parking lots along the shore...
    a good spot is suppose to be by the old church.

774.8Boston Harbor Blues....TOOK::SWEETCapt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or BustThu Jun 23 1988 17:587
    If you want to venture into boston there are all sorts of
    great places to catch blues from the shore. It ain't pretty
    but the fish tend to be big and fight tough. If anyone wants to
    know a couple of hot spots let me know and I will enter them
    in a later reply.

774.9Zinging them Bostn BluesTOOK::SWEETCapt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or BustFri Jun 24 1988 09:5360
    Marty...as promised Boston Harbor Blue fish hot spots from the shore.

    Before I had a boat I used to fish many of these spots on a single
    morning. I would get to the first one around 0500 and just keep
    running from one to the next until I hit it right.

    South Boston: The reserve channel and the Edison Power Plant outlet.
    A good early season spot (like now), many guys use tubes, I prefer
    big swimmers like the rapala magnums. Castle Island pier, again
    I like big plugs but many guys fish chunks on the bottom. I have
    caught blues up to 14 lbs from here. Fish the left side as you face
    the harbor, it is very deep. The entire beach front around the south
    boston yacht club. Joe and I had one very memorable morning blitz
    in this area ( I pulled a 17 pounder out that morning). The secret
    is finding the schools of pogies being pushed around by the blues.
    These beach areas usually heat up closer to august.

    Charlestown: Many guys fish from the charlestown bridge. I like
    the fishing pier behind the skating rink on commercial Ave. Again
    large swimming plugs or fish live or dead pogies from a balloon.
    Also there are some piers in the old charletown navy yard that guys
    fish from. They most float pogies under ballons. This whole area
    is good around now. The blues seem to go to the warmer water in
    the inner harber and the reserve channel first.

    Winthrop: From the launchramp, or shirly point or from the
    yacht club docks. Great area to fish in august.

    Dorchester: Behind the kennedy library (if they still let you??).
    Also down by the gas tank either from the pier of the beach area
    near the bridge down there. (I fish this area from a boat, but have
    seen many guys on that beach). Also there is some flats that I see
    guys fishing from more towards Marina Bay.

    Quincy: Walaston (sp) Beach. I have never fished here but hear it
    gets its share of blitzes, I have hit some from my boat in quincy
    bay.

    Hull: Behind the high school near the pt. allerton CG station.
    There is a deep channel here between hull and pedocks island.
    I always see guys fishing chunks from this beach.

    Well thats most of them...check the globe on friday...often tony
    says which of these areas has been hot lately. Timing is
    everything when fishing these areas. Like I said the best time to
    find a blitz is early AM but I have heard of some masacures at
    the castle island pier at 3:00 in the afternoon so you never know.
    Also you will need a bridge gaff when fishing most of these places.
    A bridge gaff is a large (9/0) treble snag hook (the one with the
    lead molded on) tieded to about 30ft of maybe 3/16 nylon rope (or
    something like that). When you work the fish to near exhaustion
    you let it lie flat in the water and lower the hook down and either
    snag the fish or you are pluging go for the extra gang of hooks
    not in the fishes mouth. Hoist him up and its yours. I never payed
    alot of attention to tide since I rank early AM the best time
    regardless of tide but during the day High tide is probably better.

    Well thats how to get them Boston Blues...

    Bruce

    I've always had my best luck for Boston Blues in Dorchester, by
    the gas tanks. There's a beach/boat ramp and a small cement platform
    with a chain link fence around it. I fish pogie/mack chunks there
    and catch them big (12-14lbs). The harbour is too polluted to keep
    them (I am told) and I am not a real big fan of eating them anyway.
774.11South Cape Blues FestVIDEO::LEVESQUEI fish, therefore I am.Tue Jul 05 1988 09:4130
     Well, the doctah was SOL on Saturday as it was too rough to head
    offshore for sharks. On friday, Tony called me and told me that
    they had gotten 6 blue sharks. Not a bad outing- but Makos are
    evidently few and far in between. He says that we seem to be running
    about two weeks behind in the Mako run. I bet he starts catching
    Mako this week.

     Now for the good news. We decided to hang around inshore and try
    to salvage the day by fishing for blues. Out of our party of four,
    only one of us had ever caught any, and that was in the surf in
    Florida. We killed 'em. Zinged 'em. (Zung 'em?)

     It was a riot. I caught my first chopper on a popper. It was really
    fun. He was a little guy- only about five pounds. We also used some
    jigs on wire line and trolled. That worked even better. We caught
    a few in the 13-14 lb range- real slammers. Even my wife caught
    some. Not bad for el prego. :-)

     All in all, we caught at least forty before we started tossing
    them back in. After everybody else was too tired to catch any more,
    I went up to the bow with a spinning rod and creamed 'em with the
    popper. It was so funny- two or three fish fighting over my lure.
    Sometimes they wouldn't grab the lure where the hooks were, but
    they'd let me drag them almost all of the way in before letting
    go. The wooden popper had many tooth marks in it. I can't wait until
    the fish show up on this side of the cape!

     Water temp was 63-65 degrees, tide going in, 18-50 feet of water.

    Are the bluefish really here? 'here' being either plum island or
    glouster and in great enough numbers to catch a few off a jetty
    or off shore. Someone told me that you need waders to fish off
    plum island -- Is this true? If not, what would be the best place
    for me to try? I am planning to go this weekend, weather permitting.

    to the graves and them to the B Bouy. No Blues, marked a couple
    and plenty of bait. Did not here anyone on the radio having any

    now they are just very spotty...hit it right and you are all set.

    Don't know much about blue fishing from shore around the canal.
    You'd probably get more fish on a charter, anyways. Definitely no
    cod unless you go *very* far east (like Portugal:=))

    Try fishin from shore, if you don't get much, go on a boat.

    re: Stellwagen

    Have any of you New ENglanders heard of the plans/proposal to cons-
    truct an ARTIFICIAL ISLAND on Stellwagen Banks? There was an article
    in the local newspaper on Sunday about this. Apparently some developer/
    entrpeneur (sp?) has filed permit applications with the Corps of
    Engineers (the same guys who approved Westway in NY) to construct
    multi-acre artificial islands at both Stellwagen Banks (named in
    the article) and at a location ESE of Ambrose Light Tower (sounds
    like the Cholera Banks) off NY/NJ. The article mentioned that the
    Stellwagen propsal was further along than the one here. The intent
    of these islands is to create RESORTS beyond the territorial (state?)
    limits.

    Has the fishing community become aware of this up North? I know
    from reading (SWS) and discussions here that Stellwagen is a PRIME
    TUNA ground.

    Any info would be appreciated...we will probably be fighting this

    I would'nt worry to much about it. Can you imagine the ammount of
    fill required to build an Island in 180 ft of water??? The engineering
    costs alone would outwiegh and profit for many years.

    Now a floating Island might work ? Kinda like and oil platform,
    Tow it out there and sink some moorings. That would create some
    excellent fishing structure.

    They would be under Coast Guard juristiction and would have to comply
    with all kinds of laws, Just like a boat?

774.30Maine Surf Fishing Hot SpotsCIMAMT::PANCHALThu Jul 21 1988 11:0516
    A previous reply asked about surf fishing spots in Maine. Try:

    1. Fort Popham and beachfront, south of Bath. This is a popular
    and productive spot at the mouth of the Kennebec.

    2. Wells Beach and jetty (webhanet river mouth).

    3. Ogunquit Beach River Mouth

    4. Saco River Mouth...real long breakwater at Camp Ellis south of
    Saco...popular.

    5. Kennebunkport Harbor mouth and jetty.

    I've had success at all of these locs although Ft. Popham is generally

    Was up in North Hampton State Beach, NH yesterday. Every party boat
    (and many charters) from NH and Newburyport was clustered together
    in the bay about a 1/4 mile off shore in the late afternoon. I pulled
    out my binocs. and checked them out but didn't see them boating
    any fish. There must have been a blues blitz there earlier, otherwise
    they wouldn't be there.

    Also many boats off Boar's Head, closer to Hampton Beach.

    Second-hand reports of blues hitting the shore within reach of
    surfcasting in

	Six of us chartered the OSPREY out of Orleans Ma. this past
	Saturday and we caught over 60 blues ranging from 7-15 pounds.

	The best thing about the trip was the weather, I mean it was
	perfect, the water was like glass all day.

	After leaving the dock we drove out to an area of Cape Cod Bay
	where the captain had been pretty successful with stripers, but not
	that day. We then headed for P-Town where the area was loaded
	with sand eels.

	We mainly trolled rubber squid which were real successful, once
	we put on the umbrella rigs and we were catching 2 and 3 on one
	rig. I caught one plugging with a surface lure on light spinning
	tackle, what a fight.

	We've been chartering this boat for about 5 years now and believe
	me 60 fish is an average catch, usually we catch 100+ on an 8 hour
	trip. I'm going back this Friday for more ....
774.39Flyrodding for BluesVENOM::HOUTZMon Aug 22 1988 15:1636
    You MUST promise not to tell all of my flyfishing friends (they
    wouldn't understand...and, I can't see any of them reading this
    notes file...).

    Well, yesterday (Sunday) Stevie B. and I took his boat out at the
    mouth of the Hampton Beach (N.H.) marina from 10:00 am to about
    12:30 pm (just a little joy ride) and proceeded to wreck havoc among
    the Bluefish. The best part is that we were only trolling one rod
    at a time and it was a 10 foot, 8-weight FLY ROD! I cheated and
    put a small blue "Bomber" plug on the end of the flyline, but that's
    what the conditions called for!!!???

    The 'drill' was to let the flyline out by hand about 75 feet (with
    a 25-foot mono leader), hold the fly rod in the right hand pointed
    at the plug, and hold the flyline in the left hand to 'feel' the
    bite...as well as to 'set' the trebles when the fish hit. The only
    danger was that a good fish could hit so hard as to burn the hand
    holding the line (it did happen a couple of times). We managed
    to hook and boat about a dozen good fish before the bite stopped
    (right at the turn of the tide). The rod did OK in fighting and
    holding the fish, although we suffered from a serious lack of rod
    backbone. Most of the time the rod stayed bent over double, while
    we just held on until the fish got tired. A couple of them fought
    on the surface, but most bored down deep after an initial surging
    run.  WHAT A BLAST!

    Remember....Shhhhhhh....not a word to anyone in the "Flyfishing"
    notes file.

    The "Missouri Midge"

    If you get bored with 'boat rods' or long surf sticks, try the fly
    rod route whenever fishing gets hot & furious. You may not land
    them all, but catch & release means you'll have another shot at
    them tomorrow (or, I will!).

    1 bridge, go straight over the bridge and to the beach at the end

    6" surface plugs. Thanks in advance for the info.

    The jetty I'm refering to in .54 is at the mouth of the river.Drive
    to the end of the island,park at the town lot,(you'll see the public
    restrooms)and walk down to the beach.Look to your right and you'll
    see the jetty.It's maybe a quarter of a mile from the parking lot.
    Directly across from it is the Salisbury jetty and reservation.
     I caught my fish on an orange ballistic missile,but other surface
    lures seemed to work just as well.

    crossing the bridge?Follow the road to the end(you'll see the

    Well, all this talk about these Bad Boys in Blue suits has me curious.

    I have never fished for blues before, being mainly a bass fisherman,
    and I am VERY interested in this thing called Bluefishing.
    A couple of questions about the blitzes that have been occuring on
    a semi-regular basis up at Plum Island...

    Would it be possible to use FRESH water tackle (i.e. 6' medium rod
    w/ 8lb. test) at plum island for blues with a steel leader about
    6 or 8 inches long or so !!

    If the answer to the above is YES, about what size is the minimum
    (aproximately) of a swimming type (Rapala etc) lure that I could
    use to entice a blue... seeing that a REALLY large lure would
    probably be out of the question to cast. Would I be better off
    with some other type of lure other than a swimmer ??

    Thirdly, considering my casting limitations would it be best to
    fish from the jetty side of the river or the plum island side.

    Well, I'd really like to give this a try (this afternoon, seeing
    as I can make the low tide up there) but If I'd be completely wasting
    my time, I'll pass and head for some Bassin' water, otherwise
    it sounds like a new experience. I'm not all that concerned about
    landing the fish, just hooking into them would be a BLAST !!

    Any input would be appreciated.

    directions you stated for the Bait shop, that the plum island

    mile to the right of the second red buoy from the channel.

    	My friend has a theory (other than they knew we were coming)
    that sounds reasonable. Being that the reports of bluefish were
    in and that it was Saturday afternoon, there was quite a bit of
    increase in the boat traffic. They were hitting all week and Saturday

    Well, I had my first try at Plum Island on Friday night for dem
    blues, and I can rename this topic "Zinging the Nada". I spent
    about 2 and 1/2 hrs. casting from the beach on Plum Island and
    did not hook up, but I don't feel bad, of the 30 or so fishermen
    out there, there was only one hookup. I did see a school of blues
    feeding though (at least the bait fish were a bit nervous) about
    25 yards beyond my casting range (isn't that always the case)!!

    I know one thing though, casting a 1 1/2 ounce ballistic missile
    for 2+ hours is quite the workout !! My arm was feeling it the
    next day !! Forget jogging, and all other forms of exercise just
    go out and cast one of these plugs, which by the way were the smallest
    size available for this type of plug.

    But, The experience got me sufficiently curious to give it another
    go, and dare I say buy a Surf Caster ??( great, just what I need,
    another excuse to go out and buy a new rod !!)

    Well, maybe next time the fish will be a little more cooperative

    went fishless. I fished the jetty for awhile and finially around
    7:00 left for the refuge . We fished sandy point then headed up the
    beach made numerous stops along they way with no avail.

    I just thought Id get my two cents in about light equipment .
    I've fished marthas vineyard for blues with a 6 1/2 ft rod
    with 10lb test . Id recommend you use at least a 12" leader
    (I prefer 18" myself). I wouldnt worry about screwing up
    other people, if they know enough about fishing they'll get
    out of your way . Although I would'nt fish from the jetty if
    there are alot of people out there. You want to be able to walk
    with the fish ,its bad enough walking out on those rocks never
    mind fighting fish at the same time . Ive caught fish up to ten
    pounds on this set up (its only a med action fenwick)and to six
    pounds on a 5ft bass rod (on a spinnerbait!) . I'd recommend
    The smallest ATOM poppers you can find or other poppers like
    the balistic missle ,Roberts etc. work well , also KASTMASTERS
    hopkins ,and swedish pimples are good producers. Lures in the 1
    -1 1/2 oz range should be ok with your rod . You'll have a blast
    if your just looking to have fun, but if your looking to catch
    loads of fish you may eventually want to go with heavy equipment

    By the way gus ,if it took you 45 min to land a 6lb blue I think
    you better revise your landing technique . The ten pounder only
    took me fifteen and that was hooked in the side!

    Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will definitely give it another
    shot soon !! I found that the 1 1/2 ounce lure was fine with the
    rod, but I think I might string up with some 12 lb line instead
    of the 8 lb., it felt like the line was going to snap every time
    I gave the lure the heave ho.

    The people around me kinda gave me some strange looks considering
    I was the only one there with any but a surfcaster. There was one
    guy there however with a flyrod, now that sounds interesting as
    well.

    As for taking 45 minutes to land a 6 lb. blue, I certainly wouldn't

    Light tackle for blues is no problem in a boat...I have landed many
    fish over 12lbs on 8lb test, 6 foot spinning rod. On the beach
    maybe another story. You will lose most fish near the shore when
    you try to land it. You might want to try at least a 2 foot leader
    so you can grab it and get the fish out of the water. Surf fishing
    in itself has enough challanges in being at the right place at the
    right time ect, leave the light stuff home and get a surf stick.

    I realise that landing the fish might be a problem, but if I lost
    the fish, no big deal, since I would probably release all of them
    anyways (I'm NOT and elitest catch and release person, I just don't
    care for blue fish) I would *REALLY* like to just hook into a
    10+ pounder, and hold on for the ride. I do use an 18 " steel
    leader, so if i wanted to land it (providing i EVER actually hook
    on ;^) ). The only thing I was really concerned about was screwing
    it up for others on the beach. But considering I was there before
    a lot of people, and they still came up and fished right next to
    me, they didn't seem too concerned, so I guess I shouldn't worry
    about it either.

    Also, do Stripers also hit the same types of lures as blues ??
    I hear of stripers being caught at Plum Island as well, but usually
    it was on live eels or cut bait.

    I think I'll eventually go out and buy a Surf Rod, but until I catch
    one of these guys, I think I'll wait.

    It was I, with the six pound blue. Only I made a typo and neglected
    to type the "1" preceding it. Try 16 pounds, that sound better?
    I also had no gaff, it was low tide, and the jetty had a lot of
    barnacles on it. Therefore I waited until it was 99.44% dead and
    grabbed the tail (6" leader was just inside the mouth enough to
    prevent my grabbing that.)

774.75Use the Light StuffNYJMIS::HORWITZBeach BagelTue Sep 13 1988 10:3525
    re:.62
    Go for it with the light stuff! (unless you're on a jetty).
    I regularly use light tackle (6 - 7' rods, 6-10# line...used to
    use a 9'steelhead rod 'til I broke the glass ferrule). These outfits
    work best when the surf is "down"..i.e., waves less than 2 foot,
    and THE WIND AT YOUR BACK.
    I use 5' swimmers, poppers, metals with these outfits with excellent
    results. I always make sure I double the last few feet of running
    line, using a spider hitch, and tie on a mono leader of about 30#
    test. I only use metal leaders (~9") if the blues are 5 lbs or bigger.

    NOTE: with these outfits, I DO NOT stand in the middle of the crowd,
    even though I am one of "the regulars". Fish the edge of the school,
    that way at least if the fish runs away from the crowd, you can
    follow it easily, but no matter wich way it runs, follow it. With
    light line you must stay in front of the fish as much as possible
    to avoid being cut off and minimize tangles.
    Don't worry about distance as the fish will come right up to the
    wash at sunrise and sunset. Even with light tackle you will be able
    to cast past them.

    Oh... don't forget to pick up some linament before you go...you
    will need it afterwards  ;-)

    Another question, If you're fishing from the Plum Island side of
    the river, how far done the beach must one go ?? I went down the
    beach about 200 yards from the remnants of the pier near the "Captains"
    Charter boats. And also (O.K. so it's TWO questions) how fast a
    retrieve is appropriate for the Ballistic Missile, and other surface
    lures, so far I've had the attitude "Can't be too fast for Blue

    As fast as you can never hurts. I had one blue hit a atom poper
    three times and on the forth shot he got hooked. I just kept
    yanking it away from him. You can fish from the old pier right out
    to the end of the jetty. Just depends on how far you want to walk.
    Note the walk to the jetty is further than it looks in sand. If
    the fish are there you will know were to go, otherwise its your
    best guess. The atom poper in 2oz is a good lure to cast with
    light rod, also the bomber swimmers work well.

    re: .78
    Watch out for these boat types talking about walking in the sand.
    Normal routine down here is to fish your way along the beach. Ususally
    we stop about every 15 yards and make 3 to 5 casts in a fan pattern.

                               3  cast 2
                           5-   \  1  /     -4
    			      -	 \ | /   -
                                - \|/ -
                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                                   X
   You may end up walking the same distance, but unless you see fish
    breaking or being caught, you may very well go right past a lot
    of fish. Even when fishing a jetty we use this method. If you do
    it right, you can cover an incredible amount of territory in a rather
    short time. One other thing that helps (productivity) is to keep
    scanning the water for signs of fish: birds diving, splashes, bait
    jumping or creating 'nervous' water, bait washing onto the sand,
    rods bent, guys running down the beach, etc.
    As for lures, no offense Cap'n Codfish, but 2 oz Atom Poppers are
    a little beyond light tackle. I use Atoms, but the 7/8oz & 3/8 oz
    poppers, 7/8 oz "spin atom" swimmer, 5" red-fins, rebels, bombers,
    1/2 and 3/4 oz Hopkins, Kastmasters, Gators.
    In answer to an earlier question, all of the lures mentioned above
    WILL take stripers! From dusk until dawn, I rig the swimmers with
    a dropper fly about 12 - 18 inches up the leader. The bass are just
    as likely to hit the teaser as the plug. Beware: this can lead to
    "double headers" of bass and/or blues, in which case a double
    application of Ben-Gay will be required  ;-) .
    Well, my second trip for blues was just as successful as my first....
    ZIP!!  I went up there about 6:30 and stayed until about 8:30 and
    didn't see any fish taken.  Just as I got there however, there was
    someone walking out with a blue.   I stopped at the tackle store
    jsut before the left turn towards the river and bought a  1 7/8
    oz. Rebel popper, and had some trouble casting it, not because it
    was too heavy, but too wind resistant, and the was a stiff breeze
    blowing in our faces.
    By talking to a few of the people that were leaving as I was, the
    general rumor is that the blues have been running BEFORE low tide
    hits.  Estimates ranged from 2 hours before low to 1 hr. before
    low,  anyone else out there experience this as well ??  While I
    was there, I met up with a couple of friends of mine who had
    Up until last year I was using a 9 footer - with a great deal of
    success.  Switching to the 12 footer gave me about 10-20% more
    distance with the same weight plugs...  I don't see all that much
    difference in retrieving fish though, so I'd say get what you can
    for what you're willing to spend.  I find that a medium action is
    just right for long nights of casting off the beach.
    Last year my spare rod was a 6 foot with a Penn 710 and the night
    I broke my 9, I successfully landed a 40 lb. striper on the 6
    footer!  It took over  hour to bring him in and talk about soreness.
    I suggest you try (if you can find anyone to let you) asking people
    The cool weather has seemed to improve things down here in Joisey.
    The last 10 days have produced the expected September fishing, i.e,
    lots of bait in the surf, being chased by 2 - 4 lb blues, false
    albacore (little tunny), fluke right on the drop off.
    Notable, by their appearance, have been skipjacks and spanish mackeral.
    A few days ago one of the regulars landed a fish whose i.d. had
    us all stumped. It was finally identified at a tackle shop as a
    Spanish mackeral. Notable by their absence (so far) are Bonito in
    I've gone up to Plum Island a couple of times in the last week or
	I think your best bet for blues would be to move south.  Traditionally
the blues don't hang around much after September in the Plum Island area.  As
far as how I did this past weekend - we fished Friday night until about mid-
night drifting live eels from the Salisbury drift to the mouth.  We picked up
two small stripers and a 35 pounder just before the striper season ended at
midnight.  We'll just have to wait until next year.  Also, I haven't heard of
many blues being caught in the area for at least two weeks anyway.
    Hey Gus- Don't stow those plugs yet... as long as there is the
    possibility of Blues being around. Since we had a Federal moratorium
    on Bass staring us in the face, the agreed upon line to feed the
    CO's is "Gee, officer, I was fishin' for blues when this darn old
    striper tried to steal my lure!" ;-)
    We're not real sure what the guys who use worms were gonna say.
    BTW NJ returns to 33" limit as soon as the Governor signs the bill
    That sounds good enough for me.  Given the fact that I'm using
    fresh water tackle except the terminal tackle, it will be obvious
    that I really didn't realize that the blues were long gone.
    Now for the key question:
    What are the odds of the CO believing such a story, and what are
    the laws concerning fishing for a particular species and catching
    another??
    In NH you cannot take Landlocked Salmon through the Ice, but if
    you happen to hook one, you must release it immediately, therefore
    no law has been broken.  Does the same hold true for striper/Blue
    fishing ??
    All right,  'fess up Any body out there use this excuse and actually
    have it work ??
    re .95
    Actually, the CO pretty much has to take your word for it. Since
    I actively chase both bass and blues, often in the same tide, and
    have taken both species on all types of lures found in my surf bag,
    how can a CO prove that one species was my target (as long as the
    other is possibly present)?
    However, in NJ, the laws are based on possession. You are liable
    to be fined for possessing stripers or fluke which measure less
    than the legal limits. This boils down to a "release them immediately"
    situation, even in those (albeit rare) occassions when the fish
    is dead upon landing.
    But, since it looks like we escaped the Federal moratorium (this
    year), all excuses become moot.
    Just spent over 12 hours fishing this weekend, SAW (not caught)
    just 1 blue on the beach and heard rumors of 2 others (in a 18 mile
    stretch of coast)
    Where ARE they?!?!?!?!?
    Bagel,
    	The Blues are loooong gone from up here in Maine. This was a
    strange year for them. They arrived late and although there was a
    lot of action, it was spotty and never got to that consistant level
    that we have expected over the last few years. They were in for
    what seemed to be a month or less and then they were gone.
    	I wonder if their cycle is starting to take effect. From what I
    hear, Blues were unheard of in Maine 10 - 15 years ago. I hope they
    are not on the decline again.
    	Mackerel filled the gap. I had more Tuna bait than I could use.
    We would stop for 1/2 to 3/4 hr on the way out and fill the live
    well and then some. Made for a good day even though Charlie didn't
    cooperate.
    Well I gotta go. Hope you enjoy the last of your season. I put my
    boat in the barn Sunday. :^(
    Bagel,
      Blues are long gone and no where to be found in the north shore
    area. I here they are still taking blues along the RI coast.
