My son is building a Ridge Runt, and we are having difficulty figuring out the correct dihedral angle. The instructions say 1 1/8" at the wing tip, but if we assemble at that the wing brace is proud of the top spar, and misses the bottom spar completely at the end. The "natural" angle that the wing would like to be joined at is about 1 3/4". To check that he had not glued it into the first wing incorrectly, I took the wood that he had pressed the wing brace from and extended the brace angles on a piece of paper - sure enough 1 3/4". Has anyone else found this? What angle did you fix the wing at? I understand that the RR is manufactured by a US company, but there is no name, address or phone number anywhere. Does anyone know the telephone number of the manufacturer. Stewart

Naturally, this is all speculation without being able to see the plane and plans but here's some thoughts. A "very small" error in cutting the angle into the wing brace will result in a much larger error out at the wing tips. I'd bet a 16th of an inch error in the brace could result in a half inch or more at the tips. Does the wing brace V shaped angle match the plans????? There could also be an error in the building of the wing itself. If the spars aren't in exactly the right position, the wing joiner/brace won't match up. Did you buy the RR mail order or from a local hobby shop. In most cases, Tower Hobbies for example, they have technical assistance available over the phone. If this is a problem with the kit design, other people may have already called. There could also be an error in the instructions and 1 3/4 of an inch dihedral may actually be the CORRECT measurment. Lastly, don't worry about it. Assuming the structure is sound and this deviation in dihedral isn't due to a building error, MORE dihedral won't hurt you. I don't know what your or your son's flying skill level is, but the plane will only be more stable with more dihedral. You may loose some aerobatic performance, due to the added stability, but that may not be an issue if your still at the beginner level. Go ahead and put the wing together and go have fun with it. Hi, I haven't got one but I think the Ridge Runt comes from the Sailplanes International stable. I'm not sure if there around any more so I guess you must have purchased from a model shop. As previously mentioned ..go with the 1.75" it won't spoil you're fun. If you need any local help give me a ring 782-2041 Rgds Trev |
