1622.0. "Weight of motor components" by 35989::BLUMJ () Mon Aug 22 1994 10:12

I am ready to order a motor for my towplane. The plane balances at
the CG with 40 oz. of weight in the cowl and a 2000mah rx battery
    pack butted to the firewall.

Yes, I know, this plane is quite tail heavy. I have a steerable
Tatone tailwheel and the elevator servo mounted in the tail. This
is part of the reason for the tail heaviness.

Can anyone tell me how much a 1.20 size cast aluminum motor
    mount weighs?

Also how much do mufflers for 1.20 size two stroke motors typically
    weigh?

I would like to order a motor/mount/muffler combination that is
close to 40 oz. in weight. Highe rweight is better than lower.

The Webra 1.20 weighs 27 oz. If the mount/muffler/spinner/prop
would add another 13+ oz. this would work out well.

Unless I hear differently, I will achieve the plan stated CG dry
and then start out flying nose heavy when fuel is added. Although
with a 24 oz. tank I am curious to see how this works out.

Any help appreciated on these issues, I would like to order the motor
    today.

    Regards,

    Jim

1622.1Longer Nose if PossibleLEDS::WATTMon Aug 22 1994 12:3213
    Jim,
I'd just be guessing on the weight of the mount and stuff but you
are correct in shooting for the plan CG with no fuel load. You want
the tow plane to be nice and stable - a little nose heavy is probably
good. Can you move the motor forward slightly? I have added up to
1/2 inch shims behind the mount to move the motor out when I had a tail
heavy situation. It's better to do this than add unneeded weight. My
guess is that a mount will weigh 4-6 oz. The cast aluminum ones are
probably the heaviest. (Tatone) Again, unless the nose and cowl are
not adjustable, move the engine forward as much as possible.

In case any cares, the weight associated with the O.S. 1.08
    components is as folows:

    O.S. pre-drilled engine mount(cast aluminum) - 6 oz.

    Stock O.S. 1.08 muffler - 6 oz.

    APC 15x8 prop - 3 oz.

So, 15 oz. of weight in addition to the 26 oz. engine was added. This
workd out well, as the plane will balance with no lead needed.

FWIW - the Rev-Up 16x6 wooden prop only weighs 1.5 oz
