1500.0. "Genesis HLG" by KBOMFG::KNOERLE () Fri Mar 26 1993 02:47

Now that I've built and flown the Genesis HLG a few words to both.
The building was rather uneventful. The fuselage is a very simple
    construction with no hickups.
The wings take more attention due to the (poor) quality of the ribs.
The problem with the ribs are 1) the lengths are not correct, some are
too short and others are too long. 2) some are significantly smaller in
height at the leading edge (read: airfoil not the same) 3) the cutouts
for the spars vary in size and location.
Other than that no problems encountered.
I didn't like the way the wing halves where glued together. I added top
sheeting on the center section (the plan called for bottom sheeting
only) and even glassed it. Now I'm confident the wing stays together.

For covering I used paper. Be very carefull to get the correct warp in.
For this reason I've choosen paper, once finished it won't stretch
(hopefully). If you won't have the warp (?) at the LE of the wingtip of
1/2 inch it probably won't fly correct (i.e. tip stall - Kay ?)
Flying wings do need this (okay, the Gremlin doesn't....)

More on flying in the next note.

1500.1flying the Genesis at the slope KBOMFG::KNOERLEFri Mar 26 1993 03:0230

Now for flying: I didn't need any lead nor major equipment move to get
the CG where it's supposed to be. I've choosen the configuration with
the two servos in front, one for elevator and one for rudder. No
ailerons. Then the receiver and the battery (180mA - 250mA ?) to the
    rear side of this compartment.

The tow hooks position as in the plan didn't work for me, the poor
thing went straight up and popped out. I needed the succesive
approximation method (simply called trial and error) to get the plane's
behavior on the high start as it should be. If anyone's interested I'll
measure it. The position is critical to 1/16th of an inch. You have to
    see all those holes....

One thing I have to say : this plane flew perfect from the very first
moment. It was on a small slope with light wind. After tossing (still
with certain respect) it flew straight. The turns are a must to see.
The ruder cranks the plane and with the elevator you can fly super
turns. No need at all for ailerons. I flew approx. one hour the first
time and really enjoyd it. I can slowly pull full up elevator without
any tip stall tendency ! It just takes the nose down gradually to get
the right speed what is very slow. The landings at the slope I tried
from each direction - pice o'cake. This easy handling is caused by the
    warp of the wing.

Okay, the box said HLG, how is it doingh in this arena ?

As I expected it might not be the most competitive plane here. Several
reasons I think. 1) it has two turbulator spars that slow down the
plane. 2) The wing warp might cause more drag in high speeds 3) the
    airfoil isn't real thin.

When throwing you need to be fast on the elevator trim. I installed a
push botton on the tx that trims the elevator down when pressing. When
I throw it does a nice arc to level flight now. As stated before it is
very manoeuvrable (sp ???) and easy to handle.

Performance wise I cannot say yet how it compares with others. I get
somewhere between 18 and 22 seconds without thermals. What do you get
in dead air ? I heart that 40 - 60 seconds might be achivable with
good HLGs ? What does your experience say ? I like to know ....
