1472.0. "Biplane to Monoplane in one easy lesson?" by BAHTAT::EATON_N (Nigel Eaton) Tue Nov 10 1992 10:57

I have a friend (no, it's not one of those stories!) at my club who owns a plane
called a Bi-stormer. It's a biplane conversion of a monoplane, called the
Barnstormer, which had a parasol wing. He was rigging it the other day, when he
realised that with just the lower wing in position, he'd got himself a pretty
plane! The theory is that to convert to a low wing monoplane he should take the
centre of pressure for the each wing, average the position, and put the CP for
the low wing there. A similar sort of trick works for incidence presumably.

Now this all sounds very realistic, and believable. Does anybody out there have
any experience of such a conversion?

Cheers

Nigel

Question is does the lower wing have sufficieent area to work. I would
get the wing area and the weight of the plane and do a calculation and
    put it in here.

I have a wots-wot and I know it wouldn't fly with only the lower wing.
Oh it would fly but similar to a concrete block !

The wing area we would use would be based on the Barnstormer, which flew OK on
one (high) wing, so I don't think that'll be a problem. (I hope!)

1472.3ONE WING TOO MANY KIRKTN::SFRANKLYNSat Nov 21 1992 00:2523

    HI
I had the same experience at my local club in scotland
a bibe called the Dominoe, was being flown by a club member
when the top wing came off 400ft up (oh dear)
the plane flew ok in the end landed and repaired in the same
    day.

    	HI Eric
what did you think of the top wing fixing on your
wots wot,I have just completed one and think the fixing could
be better, but i would like to here your views on building and
    	flying.

    		cheers

1472.4Move Wing to CP or Balance for Wing CPDV780::BEATTYMon Nov 23 1992 09:348
You could move the lower wing or you could just balance the plane for
the CP of the lower wing alone. I have heard of Chuck Cunningham of
Lazy Ace fame taking the upper wing off of his Bipe and flying it just
    fine with a balance adjustment.

1472.5on the Wots-Wot...GALVIA::ECULLENIt will never fly, Wright !Tue Nov 24 1992 09:1630
    Steve,

I have had no problem with the fixing of the upper wing on the
Wots-Wot. I use two bands that are tight to get on and that's
    sufficient.

I have build a few Acro-Wots and just one Wots-Wot and they go together
nicely. Instructions are clear. Wood and fittings are of excellent
quality with the exception of the tail wheel bracket. It's a little on
the light side. Now that I think of it the U/C plate is prone to coming
off on a hard landing. That's a plus but a pain. I have always added a
little extra to hold it on (carbon fiber on the inside).

On the flying side - brilliant. I have a 90 4S on mine and its capably
of flying _very_ well. It's a little more of a challange that the
Acro-Wot but I really enjoy flying it. It's a little heavy with the 4S
on it and so glides rather like a brick - but then one just comes down
in time. I used two servos for the ailerons to allow the option of
using them as flaps but found no real gain here.

I remember my first flight with it - I set up the throws etc as I
thought they should be and it turned out to be perfect. I have done
    little to change them.

How is the flying scene in Scotland ? I'm not too far away over here in
    the west of Ireland.

    Regards,

    Eric.
1472.6wots-wotMASALA::SFRANKLYNTue Nov 24 1992 21:3028
    Hi Eric
some interesting points on your wots- wot i thought.
you are absolutely correct about the tail wheel,i opted for
a steerable one by inserting a small piece of brass pipe in
the rudder to take the wheel control arm, works quite well.

I have an A.S.P 75 up front which is more than enough to play
with, there is not very much left of my engine cowl after cutting
to fit the engine. Im not very sure what you mean by your u/c plate,
do you mean the aluminium or the hard wood base to the fuselage.

I have to admit the wots is much more interesting to fly than
the Acro. when I completed the building the covering was to be
more hastle but in the end I chose to give it the DIGITAL logo
on the full span of the top wing with E-VAX on one side
and SQF-HLO on the other side of the lower wing, the only other
problem is trying to keep it clean.

flying here in scotland is very much limited by the weather
it sure separates the men from the boys, we have access to
fly 7 days a week with plenty of room for all types of
flying, in our local club the big issue this year was flying 15
and 35 where the competition is stiff.

1472.7more ...GALVIA::CULLEN_EIt will never fly, Wright !Thu Nov 26 1992 05:0116
I meant the ply plate wrt to increasing the bonding to the fuse.

One thing I forgot to say is it is wise to add a few extra hinges to
the rudder. A landing that results in the plane tipping over can damage
the rudder so the extra hinges help reduce the damage.

I covered mine per the box after putting silk on the fuse.

I also added spats with the same color scheme and its a real winner wrt
    looks.

By the way if you ever have to come over to Ireland give me a call.

    Regards,

    Eric.
