Hi! I am starting to get interested in RC. For my first project I would like to build a sailplane. I really got hooked on it one day up at BOSE in Framingham. I was up there flying kites and a couple of guys showed up with sailplanes. They walked up to the edge of the slope and tossed their planes off into the risers. No motors, no noise, just pure simple flight. When I was a kid, my father and I built a balsa and tissue glider. It was a hand tow, which did long graceful circles back to the ground. If it got damaged, it was easy to fix, just put a tissue patch, dope it, and the next day you were flying again. So I guess I want to take that one step further and actually control the plane. (get to the point Bruce!) Well, I've been to a couple of RC dealers and wanted to get some other opinions. The planes that have been recommended are: ACE Easy Eagle AIRTRONICS Sagitta 600 GOLDBERG Gentle Lady and Sophisticated Lady MIDWAY MODELS Gnome 2M GREAT PLANES Spirit and Sprit 100 Also, if someone is going out to fly sailplanes, I would like to come along and try one. (I promise to hand the controls right back if you think I'm out of control!) I fly stunt kites so I have some idea of reversal when things are pointed the wrong way. I have picked up RC Modeler's guide to sailplanes and soaring and will be reading that on my way to Colorado this weekend. Thanks for any comments, tips, and plane reviews. BG

Re: <<< Note 1468.0 by SCOT::GORDON "Bruce F Gordon" >>> Bruce, First, find a writeup I wrote a long time ago titled "So you wanna fly gliders!". Its in this notes file, so a directory should find it. I do not agree completely with the recommended list. Scratch Easy Eagle, Sagitta 600 and Gnome. None of these are good first ships. Add Airtronics Olympic II. This is a grat first plane and has an advantage none of the others have, namely size. Bigger is better with sailplanes. Finally, find Calahan State Park in Framingham and go there some weekend with good weather. At the back left field there should be a bunch of glider pilots who MAY let you have a bit of time on the sticks. Another option is to phone me at (508) 897-1750 (home) or at work and agree on a time. I have an Olympic II that I'll let you have significant stick time on, plys some high tech ships that I'll let you briefly touch the sticks on. I'm sure there are others who will help you too. Hi, Well Jacques and I are going to fly my Sofisticated Lady this weekend, however its flight is rather unusual, it rides piggy-back on a Telemaster with a 60 sized engine and 'launch tower', and when its several hundred feet up we release it (using the sixth channel on the Telemaster's receiver). We have had 6 successful flights so far! We are at the 'STETSONS' field in Orleans Ontario Canada! ps bring your winter garb, its cooooold out there! Keith (VE3 KLB) |
