I'm looking for some input. A while back everyone in Pennsylvania received a letter from the AMA that indicated PA was working on a State Park Usage Plan that specifically EXCLUDED model aviation. It listed public hearing dates and locations; our local one (Harrisburg) is coming up Wednesday. I will include a portion of that report below: "Throughout the years, various recreational facilities have been developed in several parks that depart from the theme of natural outdoor recreation, such as model airplane field or golf courses." Later in the chapter it refers to provisions for other activities such as snowmobiling, trailbikes and ATV's. (Natural??) Needless to say, I'll be at the meeting and will attempt to get mike time. Over the next day or so, I'd like to hear from you folks with ideas, so that I don't overlook anything in my preparations. I'll let you know how it goes... | \ __|__ / Regards- \________________________O________________________/ Frank.

I'd suggest you bring along some articles about noise reduction, electrics, etc, to show the amount of work going into those areas. Maybe a comparison of the noise level of a typical RC plane (.40-sized?) versus a snowmobile or trailbike (should be comparable???). Good luck, Bill | |||||

At the field near MKO we share the land with off-road vehicles. The relative impact is quite clear. The vehicles are ear shattering; the planes _relatively_ quiet. The vehicles tear up the land, contributing to erosion and an image of rape. The planes do no more damage than golfers; tiny tears are self repairing. Except possibly during the drive in and out of the field, modelers _do not_ damage the land any more than the average hiker. However, both offer a low probability physical hazard. Both disturb the tranquillity. Are you sure you don't have it backwards? They would allow off-road vehicles within the goal of wilderness-preserving use? Between now and Wednesday you should be able to dig up some noise data on planes at typical altitudes and vehicles at 200 yards away. Some photos of well maintained fields and rutted rape ranches. Alton, whose land is open for others to share --- but not for vehicles. |
