1147.0. "EZ SUPER STAR ARF REVIEW" by SA1794::TENEROWICZT () Tue Nov 14 1989 07:50

Late night when I got home I was plesently suprized to find
a package from UPS. Seems my new EZ Super Star 25 had arriver.
    I haden't expected it because I'd also ordered a new OS 32FSR
and this was back ordered. I guess they got some in because the
engine was included. I also ordered a Macs pipe an std header.
Last night I read the entire assembly booklet and started assembly
of the wing. The dyhedral brace is a little different because the
first have you laminate some carbon fibers toone piece of ply.
Then the use epoxy to laminate the reenforced ply to a balsa filler.
The instructions failed to tell you to trim off the balsa to match
the ply but this is quite evident when you try and fit the brace
to the wing panel. Behind the aileron servo location are three
laminated balsa rib fillers. In the front are two ply rib fillers.
These ply fillers and cut out to accept the front dowl. I epoxied
the brace to one panel and then after 30 minutes glued the other
panel in place making sure to align the panels in the front and
rear. While this was drying I epoxied the wing hold down plate into
the fuse. Once dry I drilled out the engine mount holes in the firewall
to accept some Davis Diesel soft mounts. One issue I have is that
the kit does not accept a muffled engine. There is no cut out made
for a muffler. Hence you are forced to run a pipe. Once all the
glue had cured I fitted the wing to the fuse and then drilled out
the wing to accept the bolts. This done the plastic center covers
    were glued into place.

I chose to go with the new OS32 FSR because two other guys at the
field have similar EX's one a Supra Star with a piped Magnum 28
and the other a Super Star with a piped 25. Neither has enough
vertical, although the Magnum has more than the OS. I hope the
OS32 has enough power to "pull it over the top".

So far the kit fit has been excellent. One other piont is that the
ailerons and elevator on this kit are already installed. Instead
of just prehinged. The fit and centering are exceptional for an
    ARF.

Last night was spent installing the pull/pull rudder controls
and the elevator pushrod. BEFORE installing the stabs. Let me
tell ya that it was difficult going. Would have been almost impossible
to do with the stabs installed. The Super Star 25 fuse is very slim.
I then got the stabs glued on and added the plastic faring piece
to the tail. Installed the rudder and tail wheel. Mounted the cowl
and glued the canopy on. Last thing was to install the landing gear
and wheels. I didn't use the stock wheels. Rather I've installed
a set a thin quickee 500 racing wheels made by Hayes. I had it
cut and fit a brass sleeve to the landing gear wires to use these
wheels. The wire is 1/8" and the wheels 5/32nds. I should get to
the rudderand elevator horns before my club meeting.

Maybe run the OS 32 today between rain drops.

It's been awhile since the last update. I've completed the assemble
and have to say that everything went well. The only mods I did was
to include a rubber mounted engine mount. Last night I installed
all of the servos, battery, radio and switch. Let me tell ya it's
tight. Very tight. I've been delayed in finishing this because of
the needs for a header for the OS32. One thing I think is a shame
is that they didn't design this bird with the capability of using
a stock muffler. You have to use an extar long header and pipe.
I've opted to install a Supertiger Tiger Paw muffler. If anyone
hasn't seen these they have an exhaust flange that bolts to the
exhaust port like a muffler. This flange provides a location to
install a bent header pipe. At the end of the pipe you install a
can type muffler. It's designed so that the can muffler can slide
in and out along the pipe. Thus giving the muffler some degree of
adjustability. I should get to install the control horns tonight
and hook up the controls. Problem then is that there is snow in
    the forcast on friday.

I've flown the Supra Star five flight now and am very pleased. I've
got a new OS 32 FSR installed with a Supertiger Tigerpaw muffler
installed. It's really not a muffler but rather something between
a muffler and a tuned pipe. I started with it adjusted to it's
minimum length. The engine would pull a Zinger 9/6 at 14K but the
needle valve was very peaky. One click either was would change the
engine. It was then lengthened by 3/4" and the peakyness went away
and the RPM rose to 14,300. I then broke that prop and had to go
to a zinger 9/7. The engine pulled this at 13K but was again peaky.
I lengther the set up another 1 inchs and the peakyness went away
and the RPM's went back up to 14K. The plane flies great with almost
unlimited vertical. Big 300ft loops are easy. I am really pleased
    with this set-up.
While building this ship (assembling) I installed the Davis
Desiel rubber engine mounts. The plane is so quiet that I cannot
hear it if someone else is in the air with me. Yet the set up pulls
like you wouldn't beleave. Now I'm torn between wanting snow to
fly off of skiis and wanting no snow so I can continue to fly the
    Supra Star.
