3.0. "RC Cars - Who's Who" by WRASSE::FRIEDRICHS (Full time parent... finally!) Thu Nov 02 1989 15:23

There have been various notes over the past few months looking for
other R/C car owners to stand up and be counted. So, rather than
have one person ask and a couple respond, I am creating this base
note for an RC Car people to have as a Who's Who in RC Cars.

I have special cased this out because I believe that the majority
of people that have entered Who's Who notes are fliers.

The first few replies are requests from others looking for drivers...

    Cheers,
    jeff

I am new to notes but have 4 years experiance in 1/10 RC car racing.
I raced off road for 3 years and am presently racing dirt oval only.
Sprint cars and late model stocks is becoming very popular out here
in Phoenix. We have 50 to 60 entries every Wednesday and Saturday
night. I wouuld like to hear from those who are active in dirt
oval racing and share ideas. I am runnig a RC10 with an Ascot sprint
car conversion, Twister or Quarter Flash motors. It hooks up and
    hauls.

3.1Calling all Cars, Calling all CarsGALLOP::NELSONRRob Nelson @EOOThu Jan 05 1989 04:3759
Its our Club AGM time and also the BRCA (UK equiv of ROAR) 1/10th section
AGM continuation time and I7d like to get some information from 1/10th RC Car
Club members regarding what typical costs are in your part of the world.
Whenever we consider an increase (!!!) in club subsciption there is a great
outcry so this year I'd like a few comparisons.

1 What is your Club Annual Membership Fee?

1a Does this include affiliation to your National Association?

2 What is the typical entry fee to a National Associatiom Sanctioned Race?

2a Is this for 1 or more days racing?

2b Is membership of the National Association required to enter?

3 What is a typical entry fee to a club meeting with no trophies/prizes?

3a Is this a full day or half a day?

4 What is the price limit for different motor classes?

5 What is the price limit for 6 cell packs?

5a What is the typical price range for packs?

I would be greatful for this information as soon as possible. I'll give you
the answers for the UK in pounds (1 pound = $1.8 approx)

1 6 pounds (we plan to increase to 8, including BRCA Affiliation), BRCA full
membership is 6 pounds per year

2 Typically 4 pounds but 5 or even 6 has been noticed last year

2a This is for one day

2b BRCA non members may race but not accrue championship points

3 up to 1 pound (50p min) if no trophies, 2-4 pounds if trophies, depending on
track rental. Cash prizes are outlawed in Europe by EFRA (European
    Federation...)

4 Standard class 15 pounds, Modified 40 pounds. This may change at the BRCA
continuation AGM, but we are fighting it!

5 No price limit, used to be 25 pounds

5a Under 20 pounds for unmatched 6 packs (Sanyo SC or SCR) up to 40+ pounds
for so called matched packs (SC, SCR or SCE, if you think you will get the
good ones rather than rubbish ones that the sponsored drivers don't want!
Buggy drivers believe in Father Christmas. The also don't understand
much about the Chemistry of Nicads! How often do YOU re match your cells!

We don't use 7 cell packs in the UK. We also banned the 'oversize' Sub C
    cells at our National AGM.

Thanks in advance.

Hi! I'm just getting started, myself. I am running a JR-X2 with
the new Imex street tires. I started to late in the season for
any serious dirt stuff, so I got into carpet track 'street' modified.
I currently race at Hobbies Plus...Yah, I think thats the name---its
been a couple of weeks since my last race. Anyway, they are located
on Amherst street in Nashua NH and are set up quite well.

I just received my order from sheldons. Yippee! I'll be playing
    with my new stuff tonight.

I loved talking tech. and hardware, so I'd be more than happy to
add my $.02, but It will be mostly theory/logic because I have so
    little experience.

Glad to sign in! The name's Greg Dwyer, I work in Merrimack, N.H.
My son Justin (13 years old) and I have been involved in building,
modifying, maintaining (lot's of maintaining!) and racing 1/10 scale
electric off-road machines since last Christmas. He's got a Kyosho
Raider, I have a Traxxas Bullet. Both are currently converted for
on-road stock class racing (with the cold weather coming, we had
to say good-bye to the dirt track for awhile). Hobbies Plus is
the only track we're racing at currently. Actually, my son is the
only one currently racing, I'm playing pit crew and coach. When
time and wallet allow, I'll get my own driving time started.

There haven't been too many of us active in this conference, hope
that can change. My time for notes is constrained, but I'll try
to get my priorities straight and contribute more from now on!

I discovered R/C car racing late last year and purchased a JR-X2
for off-road racing. Later I got a Blackfoot for my daughter and
gradually evolved it into an off-road racing machine.

I race about once a week at local tracks. There are two excellent
indoor off-road tracks within reach of where I live: Hobby Haven in
Livermore and R/C City in Milpitas.

In my high school days (late '60s) I raced scratch-built and Group
20 slot cars in the L.A. area. The big slot tracks in L.A. pretty
much died out while I was off at college. I hope we can avoid the
boom-or-bust syndrome with R/C cars.

My son, Justin (14) is the RC car enthusiast in the family (yeah right
Dad). I tend to be pit crew, provide second tier financing and some
    technical advice.

He races an RC-10 off-road. This past summer we spent a lot of time
at RCPC in W. Bridgewater. They have indoor dirt and a carpeted oval.
During the school year he attends High School in Georgia, and has
succeeded in getting a local hobby shop merchant to set up a dirt track
(funny, since the guy sells RC-10 and JRX-2s and there were no tracks
around, the guy didn come up with this himself).

While this conference is mainly flyers, I am sure it is open to car
drivers and besides every once in a while they have something useful to
say (Smiley face here)! I think we should stay here.

I'm a flyer but my son (12+) has been bugging us and we got him a Kyosho Shadow
for his birthday next month. He's been active with friends that have them so I
dare say he'll be an enthusiast soon.

I hope the drivers out there stay here in this conference. I probably wouldn't
monitor a second conference and I feel that there is enough overlap in the
battery, motor, and radio areas for both groups to benefit. We've just got to
get you guys to be less shy!
3.10my car flies, really, it does...RGB::COMINSTue Nov 28 1989 17:3219
It's been a while since I've read this notes file. I'm pleased to see
some activity on cars since this conference is so heavily dominated by
planes. I would not want to see a new conference for RC cars because I
gotten alot out of non-car notes in this conference.

I have a heavily modified Turbo Optima and a Big Brute. I have had
countless hours of fun building, modifying, crashing, rebuilding, etc.
with them. Personally, I get more enjoyment building, modifying and
maintaining them than running them so I let my kids and other kids in
my neighborhood run them around (closely supervised of course).

Recently I've been taking my son up to Hobbies Plus in Nashua, N.H. to
watch the carpet racing. Even if you don't have a car it is alot of
fun to watch. I've gotten the bug to build a 1/12th scale carpet racer
and hope to take the plunge soon. I think I might enjoy running the
cars in competition instead of just around the yard.

Hi folks. Tony Arrighi based in FXO (Franklin, MA) but currently at
TAY2 (Littleton, MA) for a few months. Well, I've found an activity
that both of my sons (13 and 6) and I enjoy. Actually, I didn't find
it; it found us. I'm still trying to get my older son interested in
ham radio, but RC took no trying at all. After "playing" with some toy
store RC stuff over the years, we got into more "serious" RC recently.
I'll be entering a reply in topic 505 on our Big Boss truck (more
accurately "their" truck -- I'm the finance manager and mail order
supervisor). Somewhere down the road I may get my own on-road racer,
    but not yet.

We've been down to Roller Kingdom in Hudson, MA on Tuesday night once,
and we plan to go more often. Would also like to see what goes
on at the Framingham civic center on Sunday afternoon and maybe
    get up to NH too.

I'll probably be entering some questions in here. Hope to hear from you
    all.

    Hi !
finally I found someone who owns a car that I know (serpent) !!
I `ve been driving a 1/8 car "on road" for about 10 years (always
an SG) and I use to go to a really wonderful circuit placed in the
middle of a large park but, sorry Murray, I live in Milan Italy.

Anyway, My compliments for your Serpent; it seems to be the best
car actually. The only problem I see is the price: it costs double
price than an SG (about 500 pounds !).

There are a couple of excellent indoor tracks here in Kansas City that
feature dirt and clay oval, asphalt on-road/oval, and offroad. One
shop has 3 independent indoor race tracks with these different surfaces
and configurations. Each shop has a 7-days per week race schedule and
one shop races for $$$$. I got interested in this sport/hobby because
it seemed to be an excellent father/son activity from an entertainment,
competitive, and educational perspective. Hopefully when my son is old
enough to participate I will have learned enough (or spent enough $$$$)
to teach him the tricks of the trade. I have been in the hobby for
almost two years and am just now getting to the A-mains consistently.

  Hi Chris, and welcome!

I don't know of anyone else in here who devotes their primary R/C energies
to land-based vehicles. In other words...the rest of us are "Air Heads"! :^)

But don't let that stop you from contributing in here! We've had a lot of
people convert or at least try other types of r/c because someone else shared
their experiences in here. But a word of caution....use real simple, single
syllable words to describe what your doing. Otherwise your going to completely
confuse some people (like me)! :^) Engines, radios, and batteries we
understand! But if you start talking about a 5/8 fusion gear transmission....
your gonna lose me! :^)

Now what I'd like to see in an r/c car is an ambulance and fire engine that
I can send out to my next crash site! :^)

        Welcome aboard!

              Jim

P.S. This is a VERY serious notesfile! We expect you to treat it
        accordingly!!!

3.35Running again..WMOIS::WHITE_CFri Aug 04 1995 12:5911

Well, I finally decided to dig out the Inferno 10 again.
Last season after only a few times out I had a servo go, and
I never replaced it. Put one in last nite and should have it
    running sometime this weekend.

As I said in my original note, I really like the glow motor..

3.36A new R/C fanEVMS::MARIONSo many fish ...Mon Mar 10 1997 12:4033
I've entered the world of R/C. R/C cars, that is. My brother bought
a Traxxas Stampede for Christmas "for his kids". Yeah, right, we all
    believe that, don't we?

Anyway, I drove it a few times and it was a blast, so after some
research and advice from him I ordered myself a 1/10 scale monster
truck. I got a Kyosho Tracker, and upgraded with ball bearings and
an electronic speed control. My radio is a Futaba Junior. I chose
the monster truck because I can drive it in the back yard, without
having to seek out tracks or what have you.

This weekend I finished painting the body. The stock body isn't yet
put together, because it's got a lot of chromed add-ons, and I figured
I'd just smash them up learning to drive. I bought a Chevy S-10 body
by Parma that has no add-ons and had a great time painting it - black
with red patterns on it. In fact, I had so much fun that I might just
buy another body so I can try some other designs.

I initially bought the Kyosho truck, radio, batteries and recharger from
Tower Hobbies. Since then I've been going to Hobby, Etc, in Amherst,
NH for painting supplies, my second truck body, spare parts, advice,
etc. Those guys are a great help, and if it weren't for them and my
brother I'd probably still be struggling with it.

I've never modelled before, and I know nothing about cars. Imagine my
surprise when the box arrived full of itty-bitty parts, and minimal
directions! I was rather taken aback. Somehow I was under the
impression that this truck was ready-to-run. It took me awhile, but I
finally have it running, and I learned A LOT from it. Now if only the
snow would melt so I can drive it!

I hope there are still some car nuts here,
    Karen.
3.37Have fun, that's what countsAPACHE::BRADOR::ZUFELTV12 @17.5K music to my earsMon Mar 10 1997 13:3717
I'm still here, car guy first then airplanes.

You've bought a good truck for running in the back yard, I
think you'll have lots of fun.

If you want to race you will have to find out what classes they have
and see if your truck matches any of them.

First hint would be to always set up a course before you just run
around, even in your back yard. This will help you learn to steer the
truck where you want it to go rather than where it happens to go. This
will come in handy when you drive on a 10 FT wide track with other
trucks. You will know how to drive.

    Good luck
    Fred

3.38Another car fan !WMOIS::WHITE_CWed Mar 12 1997 11:4011

    Hi,

Another car fan here. Don't note in here really, but then how much
talk of cars is in here !

More into nitro power at this point. Started with electric for quite
a while, then got the bug. Power is VERY impressive, makes driving
the electric seem rather tame after getting used to the nitro...

3.39What are you running ?APACHE::BRADOR::ZUFELTV12 @17.5K music to my earsWed Mar 12 1997 14:1015
Chris, what car are you driving ?

We run an OFF-ROAD "Pay-Dirt" series and an ON-ROAD "Easy street"
    series.

"Pay-Dirt" is for .12 trucks and Buggies, plus stock electric Buggies and
    Open motor Stadium trucks.

"Easy Street" is for 1/10th on road up to .15 and Formula One and 4
wheel drive Sedans on the electric side.

I like the Formula Ones the best, but the GAS are quicker most times.

    Hi Fred,

I have two, ones the 1/10th Rampage Pro (buggy), and the
    Inferno 10 (4wd buggy).

Haven't used them much because of winter, but probably will be getting
them going soon....for off-road, they seem to me to really out power
    the electrics..

    Where do you race ?

3.41Tamiya F-1 BenettonAPACHE::BRADOR::ZUFELTV12 @17.5K music to my earsThu Mar 13 1997 10:3814
Hi Chris, I have a tamiya F-1, a Benetton. We run them during the winter
indoors on carpet and in parking lot races during the summer.

I've seen the Inferno 10 go, quite fast, much faster than electric.
4 wheel drive makes it handle like it's on rails in the dirt.

If you want to know more about our racing do a search on YAHOO or
Altavista for "National Capital Radio racers" I can never remember the
addresses. Go to the home page and you can see our racing. Our 2 series
races are Easy street and Pay dirt. Plus the indoors racing is covered
    very well.
