1080.0. "OS pumper questions" by TARKIN::HARTWELL (Dave Hartwell) Mon Aug 14 1989 09:40

I recently bought a OS .61 pumper for my soon to be completed
Panic. The other day I rigged a test stand to break then engine in
on. One thing that I noticed is that you must supply a vent to
the tank (or it does not work as I found out). So here he have a
setup with this tank vent hanging in the breeze. The question is
where is a good place, and what special practices should I follow
in configuring the tank vent. Common sense tells me that when flying
inverted from the vents location that fuel will leak out. Is this
true? On the test bed I had rather long fuel lines to the engine
(8-10"). What I noticed is that when tweaking the needle valve, it
would take 5-8 seconds before the engine would respond when riching
the engine. Then of coarse, it would be way to rich. Can I assume
that this was due to the L O N G fuel lines? Boy that engine makes
power, and the throttle response is almost instantaneous.

Also, with the stock OS muffler it's louder than, well it loud. Any
suggestions short of spending more $$$ for a aftermarket muffler?
    Any suggestions for aftermarket mufflers.

I used to run all my engines without a pressure feed especially
in the olden days when we didn't have mufflers. Just feed the vent
thru the cowling towards the bottom of the plane. That way fuel
overflow goes on the ground and fuel doesn't drain when you are
    flying inverted.

As for noise- My old, circa 1973, OS 60 really barked until I put
a Snuffler on it. You may have heard it on my UGLY STICK 60.
It really helped make it more civilized. I have an extra Snuffler
in my basement if you want to try it.
