| Basically they are quieter and give you a few more gear ratio
options. Stock is 32 pitch, then there is 48 pitch (which I run),
and then there's 64 pitch. Just remember that if you change, you
have to change both spur gear AND pinion gear. Both have to be the
same pitch.

Also, people claim that in high rev situations (such as 1/12
onroad) the 64 pitch gears provide higher efficiency. All of
the top running 1/12 cars I've seen use them (I know, that
doesn't make them better).

| My son uses both 48 and 64 pitch gears. The 64 is quieter and will
extend a run before the batteries dump on-road (6 cell SCR, stock motor)
perhaps 30 seconds.
He uses the 64 in his RC-10 on-road and the 48 off-road. The 64 is very
fine which makes it susceptable to damage from small pieces of dirt
which the coarser pitch would pass. In fact I have seen debris under
the differential dust cover (after some off-road heats) that would have
stopped the 64 pitch or cut up the spur gear.
The folks at RCPC in W. Bridgewater recommend 64 pitch on carpet but
wont sell it to you (unless you demand it) if you say you run in the
dirt.
My preference would be to go with a Hyper-Drive belt system, and forget
all these gears.

| Thanks for the reply.
Re. .3
What is a Hyper-Belt Drive System anyway ?

| Hyperdrive is the trade name of several products from a belt
and pulley replacement for pinion and spur gear sets thru a
belt drive differential and all the way to a 1/10th scale
high performance on-road racer called the Hyper-10.
See the Tower catalog or a local dealer for more info.

| Dialed Racing Products produces a line of 64 pitch spur gears that
are suitable for off-road use. These spurs are very thin but are not
affected by dirt because they are made of steel. A 110-tooth spur
is a good choice for the JR-X2.
You must use a hardened steel pinion with these steel spurs; not
surprisingly, Dialed offers a line of 64 pitch hardened steel pinions.
These pinions have a neat "self-meshing" feature: the gear hub is
machined to a carefully chosen diameter slightly smaller than the pinion
teeth, so if you bolt in the motor with the teeth of the spur contacting
the pinion hub, then slide the pinion, you get a perfect gear mesh.
These gears have also been sold under the "Paranoia" brand.
