993.0. "TUCANO T-27" by AKOV12::COLLINS () Thu May 11 1989 18:11

Has anyone every heard of a pland called the TUCANO T-27?
It is one of the most successful trainer planes. It is used by the
Brazilian Air Show team. I say them when I was in Cal. last year.

A company called AIR CHAMP MODELS INC. use to make a RTF of this
    ship. It is unfortunetly discontinued.

I would very much like to try and build this bird, but I don't know
were to start looking for plans or even a possible kit that may
    exsits.

    Could someone help me start?

    Thanks in advans

It rings a bell. I remember seeing a review on it one of
the mags about a year ago. I'll go through my files and
see if I can locate it.

Can't promise anything, but if I find it I'll surely scratch
a note back to you. Give me a few days.

993.3TRY SR/CM....PNO::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Fri May 12 1989 16:0515
There was an off-shore ARF of the Tucano advertised regularly in
Scale R/C Modeler for quite some time. Honestly, I thought it was
still available. Have you checked the ads in SR/CM?

The kit came from [I think] Central America somewhere and was pre-built
of conventional materials, i.e. balsa/ply and was covered and painted
as opposed to using an iron-on plastic film. It was a bit pricey,
as I recall, but was hailed as a tremendous value considering the
    quality of construction and finish.

There is a kit available in Europe. It is manufactured in Spain
by MODELHOB. If you are intersted send me a mail to BERGMANS @GMO
and I will look after price and availability.

I think I remember it is designed for a 40.

Tucano - yes, T27 - no; original is Brazilian but is being brought
into service with RAF ( modified ) to fill the gap between
    Chipmunks/Bulldogs and Hawk jet trainers.

Quite a pretty plane - overpowered in the same way the Harrier
is - built by Shorts ( in Ireland ) to meet the RAF's AST-412 trainer
specification for a Jet Provost replacement.

A Garrett TPE331-12B turboprop engine developing 1,100 shp and giving
    an sfc of 0.547 and max low-level speed of 268 knots ( 496 km/h ). This
engine is a fixed-shaft, constant speed engine.

Apparently powerful changes of direction trim are displayed when
    the throttle is used!

Original engine was 750shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-25C.

T27 is probably one of these.

RAF trainee pilots will come to the Tucano with 63 hours on Chipmunks
or up to 100 hours on Bulldogs from the University Air Squadrons.

I think they move on to Hawks after the Tucano?

Maybe I can help a little.

I have the above information from the September 1988 issue of Air
    International.

    A 9 page article includes a 2-page 3D cut-a-way spread, a small
B&W 3-view, 5 color photos of the plane in action, 1 color photo
of the front cockpit instrument panel, 4 B&W phots of the plane
on the ground and 2 of it in the air.

Performance, weights and dimensions are given and as well as a fairly
detailed history of the project and flight impressions.

This is the RAF version which is somewhat different, I conclude,
from the Brazilian progenitor - the lower powered Pratt & Whitney
    version.

If you would like I will send the magazine - although I would like
it back sometime!? as I had saved this just in case I would like
to build one in the future - I was also attracted to it!

I have seen kits advertised in the English mags and am sure I have
seen a kit review somewhere in the last year but last night failed
    to find it.

If you like, Norm, I will keep looking - let me know and about the
    mag.

    Regards and good luck

I was trying to read your entry on the Tucano note. Is there
anymore that you are adding to it? It keeps saying your note is

993.11UK Tucano kits (993.9 got garbled)VANISH::BOWIEScott BowieThu May 25 1989 05:1931
There is a small company in the UK that manufactures two Tucano kits -

    	56" span for 40/60 engines - 74
    	78" span for 15-25cc engines - 140

I gave them a call and they say they are sport-scale, but closer than the
Modellhob kit. Kits contain "everything", glass fuz, foam wings, drop tanks(?),
pilot, canopy, cowl, wheels etc. They have experience of shipping overseas,
quoted about 30 airmail for the smaller model, 100+ for the larger
(apparently it is a big box that gets charged volumetricaly rather than by
weight). The small model is on a 6 week waiting list, the larger 4 weeks.

Their address is - Leicester Model Centre, Stafford St. Corner, Melton Road,
Leicester, England. Telephone - +44 533 666363 I have some literature in the
post to me which I will forward on when I get it.

They were reviewed in Radio Control Model World, September 84. The guy I talked
to said it was a poor review complaining about weight of the model when the
reviewer had it sprayed by a car bodyshop and put in too small an engine (he
has a vested interest, but given other reviews I've seen from that mag, I would
agree they don't always seem fair.). Their address is Severn Drive,
Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire WR8 0JL, England. Anybody else in the UK have
that issue??

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

    Norm,

Currently the exchange rate is about $1.8(US dollars)=1.00(pound
sterling) so for instance 100(pounds) is about $180(dollars) -
I think you will find that prices for our hobby are cheap in the
US by comparison with the UK - OS48 Surpass for instance is 145
    (pounds) that's about $260(dollars)!

    Start saving those pennies!

    Good luck

I could the copy of AIR Internationl today. It's great!
Now it's really got me going.

Since I cannot afford the kit, I'm going try to scratch build
it. I plan on reading th mag cover to cover tonight, but I could
use some help on the research part. I hope the mag will give me
a start, but could could someone point me in the right direction?
I've never research a plan before.

    	Once again, thank you Brain.

You should try to dig up that article on the Tucano -- the more I
think about it, the more I think it was in MA. Maybe a call to
them will identify the issue and plan. That was a high quality
model.
993.17MA Tucano articalAKOV12::COLLINSThu Jun 01 1989 13:247

993.18Plan located in UK!LASHAM::WARWICK_BFri Jun 02 1989 07:1844
    Norm,

I have located a plan for the Tucano from Radio Modeller magazine.

    Details ...

TUCANO - sports scale model of the prop-jet trainer, 46inch span
for 0.30 to .040 cu in motors and 4 function R/C.

    Plan number RM291 - price 4.25 + 0.60p p&p ( UK )
    Foam wing FWTRM291 - price 13.50 inc. p&p ( UK )
    Cowl COWRM291	- PRICE 2.75 inc. P&P ( UK )
Offer includes FREE canopy ( I think they mean if you buy all three)

It's only sport scale and it may be too small for you but it may
be a good start for drawing your own plan.

If you would like me to get one and send it I will - I don't know
what the shipping costs would be but the cost of the bits above
would be about $34 ( US dollars ) or $8 for the plan only ( which
I could put in the internal mail to you.

Let me know what you think.

Yes, I bought it at Fisher RC this weekend. The plane is an ARF or RTF,
I'm afraid. I actually looked it up last night, but to my dismay, seem
unable to remember the manufacturer today. It's a nice looking plane.

send me mail, and I'll look it up tonight.

I am not going to enter the mathematical foray however I have seen
the Leicester Models Tucano fly and it appears to be a good machine
one of the clubs I visited recently had a member flying a Tucano
and an L.M.C. Harrier. The Harrier was unfortunatly not as sucessful
a model as the owner seemed to be using it primarily for a series
    of hogh speed Taxiing exercises!!!!!!!
