987.0. "Modifications and Designing" by SA1794::TENEROWICZT () Tue May 09 1989 08:47

I thought as how the noters within this file are growing in
experience a note on kit/design modifications would be a interest.
For those that dabble with design, those that can't seem to
build a kit stock and those that find flaws within a kit that
need to be corrected. Lets talk about what we do, why we do it and
what we think will be the result and then report on the results.

    I'll start,

Within the last month I've been building a Fun Fly plane for our
up coming fun fly season at my club. I wanted a simple rugged
design that could use the new Enya 45 I had bought. I also wanted
a cheap kit. What I choose was the Balsa USA Stick 60. It comes
with a 60" semitrical wing and is rated for a 40-60 sized engine.
When I got the kit I decided I didn't want to build it stock as
a high wing ship. So I sat down and thought about what I wanted
from this plane. I wasted something that would fly well, be
manuaverable and resistant to being banged around. I choose to leave
the wing as a rubber banded set up to help with the banging around.
I lowered the wing to make it a shoulder wing ship and kept the
moments the same. In addition I have added sheet balsa sides to
the rear portion of the fuse and baxed it in. LAst night I started
the wing and have decided to use aileron torque rod instead of the
bellcranks and I'm going to leave the wing tips squared off. This
    should help the snap rolls.

OK, Now what is evenrone else building or have built that was modified.
Again why did you change it and did it work.

There's an interesting discussion of fuselage stress and
reinforcement in Bill Forrey's column, June 1989 Model Builder.
