957.0. "CO2 Power Pods?" by K::FISHER (Stop and Smell the Balsa!) Tue Apr 11 1989 17:39

Was thinking about power pods for gliders the other night.
What do you think about a CO2 powered power pod.

That is take CO2 cartridges as in the little CO2 BB pistols
and somehow rig them up so that you can fire them thru a nozzle
that you could adjust for short duration max thrust or long
duration min thrust or anywhere in between.

Anybody ever hear of this being done before?

    Kay,

Don't waste yer' time. When I was a kid, Monogram had a line of
tethered cars and boats that were CO2 powered just as you describe.
The performance was disappointing at best; low power and very short
    duration.

Using the C02 cartridge as a source of Jet propulsion wouldn't work too
well. The steel casing is very heavy, and the amount of C02 inside is
enough to inflate a good size bbirthday baloon.

Recently, in M.A.N. or maybe M.A., there was an article about a guy
who's been working on C02 powered motors. He's succesfully converted up
to something like a .15, working on larger sizes. The article said that
they don't turn too fast, but have a LOT of torque. They were talking
about an .049 turning a 10-6 at 5000-6000 RPM, I think. He got decent
duration by using a larger tank, rather than a small cartridge. The
technology seemed pretty promising, as maybe an alternative to Electric.
About the same power, without the added weight of a battery. I meant
to write to the guy for additional info, but seem to have let it slip.
Maybe I will, now, and I'll let you know what he says.
