824.0. "RC helicopter kits and clubs" by RAINBO::HORTON (Ken) Wed Jan 04 1989 07:46

My father was wondering where there might be some hobby shops in the
Framingham or Marlboro MA area that would sell RC helicopter kits.

He is also looking for any clubs for RC helicopter orRC plane clubs which
would include members interested in RC helicopter flying.

Thanks, Ken

824.1Fisher RC in FraminghamFAUST::FAUSTWed Jan 04 1989 12:1911

    Ken,

There is a shop right in Framingham called Fisher RC. Bob Fisher is
the owner, and runs it out of his house. He keeps fully stocked on all
RC equipment, kits, parts, etc. He also flys a helicopter regularly,
and seems to known his stuff. He can point you to some local clubs, one
of which is in Wayland. Hope this helps..

Botown Hobbies also has some heli flying in Saugus, at a school
next to Route 1, but I don't think that is as close to Framingham
as Tewksbury is. If you are interested in the Tewksbury chopper
field, send me mail and I will give you directions. They fly on
odd numbered days, and all Sundays until noon. (Odd Sundays, they
    can fly all day.)

824.4Mytchett R/C Helicopter Club, U.K.FUTURS::RUTTERVrooom, Scrunch, Vrooom, ScreechMon Nov 18 1991 12:2721
I've not had anything to say in this conference for a long time now.
That's because I haven't done anything to do with R.C. for ages.

Anyway, I spotted someone from the main road the other day,
flying an RC helicopter so I drove around and stopped for a chat.

It turns out that this guy runs a heli club just a couple of miles
from where I live. They meet every Sunday afternoon for flying, as
well as on a Tuesday night for a sociable drink.

I went along on Sunday to see what/who was present and this is
obviously just what I needed. I will know join get back to work
on my model heli and join this club. Then, with the help of the
club members I will have some chance of being able to fly the thing !

Anyone in the North Hants/Surrey area interested in RC heli's, then
the club meets at the 'Mytchett Community Centre', which is just off
the main road from Ash to Frimley. The club is affiliated to the
national body, so insurance can be arranged through them.

J.R. going to start playing with my chopper again now !!!

I've now joined this club (membership runs from Jan-to-Jan) and
thought it may be worth entering a few more details...

Club name = Mytchett R/C Helicopter Club

Affiliated with the BMFA, membership of which provides insurance.

The club is run by Brian Holman, who has flown heli's for about 5 years.

It was started last August, with 8 members. The roster now lists
24 club members. This means that it is the fastest growing model
club [under the BMFA] in the U.K. !

A couple of reasons for this - firstly, heli-only clubs seem to be
quite rare, so when one is started, it can attract members from any
local fixed-wing clubs who are primarily interested in heli's.
Secondly, many of the other clubs have got waiting lists for
members wishing to join, thus preventing further growth.

Of the other members of the club, there are a few 'old-timers' who have
been flying helicopters for years. A fair percentage of members have come
from a fixed-wing background. As for the rest, a good 40%, they are
generally beginners (me too) at various stages - training gear abounds !

As previously stated, club night is Tuesday, when we meet either at
Mytchett Community Centre for a drink, or (on alternate weeks), go
around to Brian's house (in Mytchett) for food+drink.
We have the use of the football pitch at the community centre for
flying, particularly after 12 on Sunday, or other days upon request.
As an alternative, the club also fly on a field adjacent to the A325
in Aldershot. This site is bordered by trees on two sides, so does
afford some protection from the wind - so long as height is kept down.

If anyone is interested in this club, either mail me or turn up for
a chat. Further new members are still welcome...
