786.0. "GYRO PROBLEMS {don't mean sandwich}" by WFOOFF::MALESHEFSKIG () Wed Nov 30 1988 23:03

          I recently purchased a GMP gyro for my competitor helicopter.
    The problem is that I find I still have to fight the tail constantly.
    I purchased the gyro new, and to this day, no matter what sensitivity
    I set, I'm still fighting the tail. I admit it's good practice but
    my thumb and forfinger get tired. I have a 1200 ma airborne pack,
    so there's plenty of juice. Does anybody have any feedback on this
    type of gyro? Does anybody have the FUTABA BB153 in their bird?
         I would appreciate any prior experience on this type of problem.

    Glenn, I'll be blunt.

    		THE GMP GYRO IS A PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!!!!

    In my club the gyro of choise is the Futaba mini G154. Reasonably
    priced and very powerful. I have mine set at 3 in the Junior. I
    hovered a guy's Baron 28 with his gyro set at max and almost couldn't
    move the tail. You had to hold full rudder and wait for a responce.
    That's powerful. Most times for a hover setting we set them at 5
    and then work our way downwards. Presently this gyro is being used
    with both Futaba and JR Century VII radios. Fit right into the
    Futaba. With the JR you have to trim off a locating tab but it works
    mint.

786.2A POSSIBLE USE FOR GMP GYROSSALEM::COLBYKENThu Dec 01 1988 09:5114
    I will have to agree with Tom. I had the GMP gyro in both of
    my choppers and had even modified the electronics to improve
    the sensitivity. They still did not work properly. I pulled
    them out and replaced them with the Futaba 154 mini gyro.
    I plan to save them for model boat anchors if I ever get into
    model boating.

    I have experienced the opposite problem,where the gyro seems to
    lock the tail in line even when it is wound right down. I am using
    a futaba dual rate gyro,any idea's?
786.4GMP's gyro's junk but there are other causes.FSTVAX::GINSTRUCTOR2Thu Dec 01 1988 11:0529
    One more vote against the GMP gyro. However, they have been known
    to work. Is your tail rotor set up correctly? You should be able
    to turn the gyro off and lift the copter into a hover. The tail
    will swing as you leave the ground but once you get into a stable
    hover the tail shouldn't swing. If it does swing then set it down
    and adjust the trim on the tail rotor and try again. Once you have
    the tail trimmed out go back and adjust the pitch on the tail rotor
    to center the trim.

    Note that while you're trimming the tail that not only should the
    gyro be turned off, but so should the ATS in the radio. This means
    if your not extremely comfortable hovering your copter, the procedure
    is best left to your local expert. After you get the tail trimmed
    out you can turn on the ATS function on the transmitter. In the
    case of the Century 7, use the up and down knobs to trim the copter
    out. The up knob should be set so that when you hit the throttle
    the copter rises straight up with little or no tail swing. Likewise,
    the down knob should be set so the copter drops straight down when
    the throttle is chopped.

    If the tail rotor and ATS are set up corrrectly you really don't
    need a gyro. If they're not set up right then you get stuff like
    what you describe happening. The tail rotor, ATS, and gyro are all
    fighting each other instead of working together.

    Hope this helps. The procedure is over the head of a novice so get
    an expert to help if you fall into that catagory.

           Thanks guys.

                    I quess there's alot of possible parameters involved
with the set up and operation of a gyro. I think I've tried them all with
this gyro. It's trash !!!

786.6One more thought.FSTVAX::GINSTRUCTOR2Mon Dec 05 1988 09:459
    Glenn,
    I thought of one more thing that can cause problems with the tail.
    Check the swashplate to make sure there's no binding. If the swash
    plate sticks even a little the torque reaction will swing the tail.
    I had this happen to my Cobra this summer after I had used a water
    base cleaner to degrease the ship. After I pulled the swash plate
    and cleaned and oiled it everything was back to normal.

    Dan,

         I checked the swashplate and it looked good. I also manually
    manipulated the helicopter to see how much servo motion I would get to
    counteract the tail movement. There was hardly any servo action
    at all. I think position of the gyro is a factor also, but in a
    competitor you are limited as to position. I just bought a futaba.
    I hope I have better luck!!!

    Please enter a note with the results of the new Futaba gyro,
    so that people will also be able to see your results as well as
    ours. The more input (to a point), the better conclusion people
    can make. Good luck with it.
