678.0. "3 Minutes! Is this racing or boiling eggs?" by GALLOP::NELSONR (Rob Nelson @EOO) Fri Aug 26 1988 11:53

One of the big attractions of gas cars, I have always thought, is
the fact that the races last for 15 or more minutes. In the UK
we race electrics for 5 minutes, which is just about long enough
to recover from a bad start, but not much else. Last yaer the national
controlling body (BRCA) propsed 4 minutes and 8.4v packs. This
was mainly trade inspired and was thrown out. I was surprised to
find that 3 minutes is normal in the USA. I have trouble getting
my car to dump in 5 minutes (especially my RC10). We are beginning
to see 12 turn triple wind motors for use with SCE cells.

The only benefit I see in 3 minutes is to the retailers, the cost
of damage alone must be enormous, but then as the sport is lead
my manufacturer sponsored drivers are we all being taken for a ride?
Or is 3 minutes a sop for badly built, inefficient cars?

I AM CURIOUS .. ARE YOU RUNNING 1200mah BATTERIES OR WHAT. IF YOU
ARE THEN WE HERE IN PHOENIX WOULD LIKE TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON. A
15 WIND MOTOR WILL RUN 4.5 MINUTES AT BEST HERE WHERE OVAL RACING
IS VERY POPULAR. THIS WOULD BE FLAT OUT RACING FOR 4 MINUTES AROUND
A DIRT OVAL. DUMPING IS STILL A PROBLEM EVEN WITH THE MOST EFFICIENT
RUNNING CARS. ARE YOU RUNNING MUCH DIRT OVAL OR OFF ROAD OR ROAD
RACING. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT A 12 TURN MOTOR COULD RUN FLAT OUT
ON DIRT FOR 4 MINUTES USING 1200mah MATCHED OR SCR BATTERIES. I
KNOW SCR ARE BEING USED IN OUR STOCK CLASSES ie. 7.2V BUT NO ONE
HAS TRIED SCR IN OUR MODIFIED CLASS BECAUSE WE'VE HEARD THEY DUMP
FASTER. IS THIS TRUE? NORMALLY WE RUN A 20 TOOTH PINION 64 PITCH
GEAR WITH A 15 TURN MOTOR.

I think he said that he was using the Sanyo SCE cells, these are
the new 1700MaH batteries that Sanyo introduced about 9 months ago.

THANKS FOR GETTING ME STRAIGHT ON THE SCE BATTERIES. ARE THEY ROAR
LEGAL? CAN I ASSUME THEY GET 30% MORE RUN TIME?

I don't race cars, I fly electric planes, so I don't know if they
are ROAR legal, I can tell you that, yes you do get improved run
time from these batteries, but no, 30% isn't the number, I think
    you'll see that 1700/1200 = 1.41666, which says that they yield a
41% increase in duration. They are the same size, and only a
fraction of a gram heavier than the 1200MaH cells, but due to
thier slightly higher internal resistance, you don't really get
41% when you are drawing high currents from them. My static bench
tests gave me 35% to 38% longer run times drawing 14 amps or so.
