Phil - this sounds very interesting - why don't you post the details
about the event and directions. If I'm free I'd sure like to see
these beasts run. Maybe Al Casey will fly out?

| Do you race against another car, one on one, or against the clock?
What do they have for an engine(s)?

| Bernie,
I've yet to see them actually race, but here, locally, the 1/4-scalers
are running larger gasoline (Quadra-type) engines. I've seen a
guy running a 1/4-scale sprint-car out in the pucker-brush, just
for practice, and I think it'd be a kick to see several of them
racing on a dirt oval. I'm aware of another fellow running a dragster
and [I'm told] he does the burn-out, backs up, stages, then makes
his run, complete with a drag-chute after crossing the traps. "Scale"
speed in the quarter-mile is said to be comparable to the full-scale
stuff; in the 250-275 mpg range with ET's in the 5-6 second area
for a 1320' (1/4-scale) dragstrip. I'm not aware whether they run
them head-to-head or strictly for time.

676.4 | BIG $$$$$ | BTO::BREAULT_B | | Fri Aug 26 1988 15:31 | 15 |
| This sounds very interesting, but I see BIG $$$$ signs. Especially
in the dragster area. Sounds like everything has to be custom built
and machined. Not something my current finances (or future for
that matter) are able to support. I'll stick with planes, thank
you.
I don't believe this is an area that has been touched on in this
notes file before and it caught my interest. The last time I had
anything to do with anything of this type was back in the 60's a
friend of mine had an .049 powered Indy type car that ran on a tethered
line. Went like H**L in a circle.
Thanks Al,
Bernie

Sorry I haven't responded sooner. This should answer all the questions.
We run side by side just like the real drag cars. In September they had
a race up at new England dragway and it was side by side using the Xmas
tree with red lights and pro starts.
There are two company's making top fuellers and most people have the pacesetter
car for ca. I have a a PDP cobra which is by far the better of the two. It
has a much scaler look. The pacesetter car runs a 50cc quadra and the cobra
uses a 37cc zenoah. PDP has recently built a new car that looks like Eddy
Hill's car and has a 70cc zenoah and I want one real bad. Nothing can touch it.
At the race at New England dragway I ran against the pacesetter cars and even
though they have bigger motors who ever got the jump one. I ended up coming
in second in the gas class and ran a 6.01 at 226 (scale mph's) You can divide
by four for the actual mph.
The best car at the race was a 1/4 scale pro-stock car that looked exactly
like bob gliddens car and was running in the 5's.
I have a friend who has a hobby shop and is giving me a pacesetter funny car
to run next year. So I will be running the new Top fueller and the funny car
at several tracks on the east coast.
If anyone is interested I would sell my dragster, ready to run with the radio
for $1,500.
I also just build a 1/10 scale electric dragster! You should see this thing
run! It is getting a new motor next week that turns at 108,000 RPM.

I find that a little hard to swallow (no rude comments, please).
108000 RPM is up in the speed range of turbines. Did you really
mean this ?
