I am looking for the November'87 issue of Model Airplane News. My son and I have decided to try scratch building the Thunderbolt that is described in that issue. We have written for, and gotten, the full size blueprints, but now realize we need the text of the Nov. issue for construction info. and where to order the foam wings. If someone could loan me the issue for a week, I'll copy the Thunderbolt article and return it to you soon. Thanks for the help. Reading other topics here in RC notes has been entertaining and even informative. Sam

491.3 | Cutting Foam Wings? | RDVAX::FULLER | Sam Fuller | Mon Mar 21 1988 22:25 | 21 |
Ray, your Nov. issue of M.A.N. arrived in interoffice mail today. (Seven days from Marlboro to Maynard!) Forget the delay, I really appreciate the article and we continued working on the Thunderbolt after getting your article. Also, Dan thanks for your offer to copy article--I was amazed to get two offers for help within two hours of posting my request. Next problem: making foam wings. I assumed the article would tell me which ready made foam wing to order, from SIG or whoever. Rather it makes the following statement: "For wing construction, use the airfoil section from the plan and make a set of templates to cut the foam wing cores (there are many commerical firms which offer this service)." Huh? Can anyone translate this? Can I buy foam blocks and then make some kind of jig to cut the foam? Would I be better off to scratch build the wings from ribs and spars? Sam

Sam, If Salem, NH isn't too far out of the way, there is a person in the Salem Barnstormers that makes foam wings for, I think, $4 per set. I am not certain of the price, but I know it isn't much. You can get them done through Bill's Hobby Barn. If you want more information, either contact me at the above node or call me at DTN 261-3212. Ken

SAm, I recall seeing ads in magazines from outfits that sell Foam wing cores for various planes. You might want to lokk into that also. md |
