444.0. "Royal Spitfire, SIG Skybolt and Super Sportster" by MURPHY::ANKER (Anker Berg-Sonne) Mon Jan 25 1988 10:56
Since the RC_REVIEWS idea was overwhelmingly voted down,
I'll keep reveiwing stuff here.
At the next meeting the CRRC will do kit reviews. It
looks like a super meeting, which I will have to miss. The way
it works is that everybody who attends gets a review form and
then fills it out for the kits he/she has personal experience
with. Then there's a panel of very experiences builders who
arbitrate and review the input, which is finally assembled in a
matrix form and distributed to the membership. When it's done, I
will, unless somebody beats me to it, type it in here. Later in
the year we have an engine day and may do the same.
Between Bill and me we have a Royal Spitfire Sr., a Sig
Skybolt and a G.P. Super Sportster 60 on the bench. The
Spitfire and Super Sportster are similar in quality, very high.
I would recommend neither for an inexperienced builder, bot
someone with a few models under the belt will get real pleasure
from putting them together. The SIG Skybolt is another story.
Lots of balsa that needs to be cut on a band saw and I'm having a
terrible time getting it to build reasonably straight.

| Craft-Air (Dynaflite) Drifter II
Wood
Balsa fuselage sides = excellent (machined)
Balsa ribs = fair - straight but not precisely shaped
Plywood = excellent - but there was very little of it
Instructions
Excellent - this is a beginners class glider. The instructions are
on the top of the plans which are 1 sheet.
Overall impression.
Good quality - built light.
Great Planes Big Stick 20
Wood
Balsa fuselage sides = Good - shaped well but not straight.
Balsa ribs = Excellent - They were die cut but they just fell
out of the stock. The best ribs I've ever had in
any kit so far.
Plywood = varying in quality from poor to excellent
The thicker pieces for wing bolts and fire wall were excellent
but the other formers and doublers were cheap poorly fitting
pieces - but they were straight.
Instructions
Good - Separate instructions from plan. The plan is printed on both
side - I haven't found this to matter yet - but I'm still
building this one. The instruction booklet is the same booklet
for the Big Stick 20, 40, and 60. And has instructions for
assembly as both a tail dragger and a nose gear. I think it
is a bit lengthy but they describe how to do things for beginners
like drilling holes over scrap wood, etc.
Overall impression.
High quality - built like a tank - and probably too heavy.

| here's an other:
CG PIPER CUB (Anniversary Edition)
Wood: Excellent . All parts die cut. Die is OK quality so you have
to be careful when popping the parts especially the plywood ones.
part fit: wing parts (balsa) are very good. No adjustment are needed
The fuse is all plywood. It will build straight and true
if you bild per instruction. The problem is that the notches
will have to be filled. Tailplan is also balsa and mostly
built up
Instructions: Good but oriented towards someone that has built planes
before.
