| If you have a fin keel, its common practice to mold in bolts when
you pour the keel. These bolts then attach through the keel of
the yacht and are held with flat washers and nuts. If your boat
has internal ballast ("long keel") mostly used on old designs,
the lead is securely attached to the frame, probably with epoxy.
Please get some help, as pouring a keel is a "black art".

| I built a Dumas "Star 45" a number of years ago... It is an all
wood boat, except for the keel.
The metal keel is epoxied in a sandwich between the two halves of
the bow to stern main rib (so I forgot their proper names...).
I used a fair amount of epoxy and lots of clamps. The keel is just
a 1/8 inch piece of steel.
I then had to add 9 lbs of ballast to the end of it. I used a mixture
of epoxy and lead shot, poured into the mold that was supplied.
I used dowels to keep 2 holes open for bolts. After it was dry,
I bolted the 2 halves onto the keel. (I did this after the rest
of the hull was built...
Did that make any sense???
Cheers,
jeff

| When you get help from this note on construction of your 12M yacht,
make sure you're not hearing fro any of the Oz-ites. They have
a few problems in that area, ya know!

| A friend of mine in NH had an RC yacht but it was quite different
than what you guys are talking about. The hull was fiberglass and
the keel was hollow. If I remember right he filled the keel with
lead shot and then covered the top surface with a layer of silicone.
This way he could add or subtract with minimal effort.
