1191.0. "removing oil" by MAUDIB::CASEYA (THE DESERT RAT RC-AV8R) Thu Oct 22 1987 19:40

    Chris,

    Sorry to hear of yer' misfortune...if there was just some way to
    prove a deliberate shoot-down. Man!! A guy who'd do that has to
    be the absolute lowest form of life known. I wouldn't even consider
    doing something like that to my worst enemy...oh well, whatcha'
    gonna'do? What goes around comes around and, if guilty, these
    crumbs'll get what's comin' to `em one day! Had they ever done/
    said anything before to indicate they might want to get to you?

    The best thing I know of to remove oil from bare wood is K2R spot
    remover: just spray it on in a "thin" coat and let it dry...it'll
    turn snowy-white with the absorbed oil showing up as yellowish
    colored areas...just brush it off and repeat `til no more yellow
    appears. At this point, you'll have removed all the oil yer' likely
    to and be ready to re-glue, repair, re-cover, whatever.

    To remove oil from film-covered surfaces, one way is to use acetone
    or thinner (like K&B), whatever will not attack the film. Alcohol
    is not great for this as it leaves a minute film of oil which causes
    problems sometimes. A new (to me) cleaning solution called "Simple
    Green" seems to be an EXCELLENT grease/oil remover. I've seen this
    stuff remove "old" motor oil stains from concrete driveways and
    several modelers I know use it to clean their airplanes and really
    rave about how it removes every last trace of oil. Might be worth
    a try.

    Was the wing totalled? Bad as it might look, often times, if you'll
    just sit down with all the pieces and a bottle of CYA, you'll have
    it back together in much less time than building a new one and,
    right now, time `til yer' back in the air is a critical factor.
    Keep us posted as to yer' progress...Oh! and you'd be smart to have
    the radio looked over prior to flying it again, even if it appears
    not to be damaged. Do you have a local repair person you can take
    it to for a thorough going over??

    Adios and hang in there,	Al

1191.1 Oil & monokote don't mixBZERKR::DUFRESNEVAX Killer - You make 'em, I break 'emThu Aug 13 1987 10:2711
    I've across a bitchy problem while recovering the wing. The trailing
    edge of the wing in the middle has been oil soaked (seapage through
    aileron control rod). The MONOKOTE just won't stick. Now I've had to
    recover that part once already and solved the prblem by sealing
    the wood with thin CA. Worked fine.. I clean the area with rubbing
    alcohol. Still no dice.

    Anyone got any suggestions. (Replacing the trailing edge is not
    something I want to do. Try an other.)

1191.2TRY THIS FOR OIL17929::COLBYKENThu Aug 13 1987 10:353
    I have not tried it, but I understand that the spot remover KR2
    works very well for removing oil from balsa wood.

1191.3BASHER::DAYJust playing with my chopper....Thu Aug 13 1987 10:5918

	The people who make Solartex/film reccommend placing
	a tissue over the oil soaked wood and iron it with a
	warm iron.... do this several times and eventually
	the oil will be drawn out of the wood.

	I must admit I haven't tried this myself, as none of my
	planes last long enough to get oil-soaked...

	cheers

1191.4CA seals oil..BZERKR::DUFRESNEVAX Killer - You make 'em, I break 'emTue Sep 01 1987 10:2712
    Well I solved the oil soaked trailing edge problem the same way
    i did the first time: Sealed the affected area with thin CA. I tried
    the paper & iron technique & it was to time consuming.

    Anyway, it works like a charm.. The wiing is all covered up..

    All I need to do now is break in the engine and go flying the
    week-end..

    Anyone feel like giving me a hand ? I fly CMRCM.
