258.1 | bells 'n whistles 'n WOW!! | GHANI::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT RC-AV8R | Wed Aug 12 1987 12:35 | 25 |
| Ken,
I have some second hand knowledge of the JR Galaxy. One of my good
flyin' buddies just recently bought one (a 7-ch, I think) and installed
it in a brand new Byron Staggerwing w/Quadra-50. I was somewhat
dazzled and impressed with the fact that, to make end-point/throw/
reverse type adjustments, you don't have to remove any panels, flip
any switches, tweak any pots, etc. as is the norm for the current
vintage of radio systems. ALL of these operations, PLUS set-ups
for up to 7 individual aircraft, are simply "entered" on a keypad
on the front of the transmitter. Ex: When we were setting up the
throttle during test-runs, Chuck (my buddie) could "dial-in" any
needed change to total throw, top and bottom end-points, etc. in
less time than it took to talk about it. SHAZAAAM SARGE!
My only concern is that, even though I work with it, I know just
enough about all this hi-tech solid state (and am just "old-school"
enough) not to trust it 'til I've seen it PROVEN under fire. Gotta'
admit, though, it WAS impressive...I just hope the micro-processor
et al will stand up to the kind of abuse we subject our equipment
to in the course of day-to-day flying. Chuck's rig has a dozen
or so flights on it to date without the whisper of a problem, so
we're hopefully confident that he bought a winner.

The real test will be resistance to heat. Last time out I almost
burned my hand picking up my Futaba radio.

258.3 | sounds good so far | NISYSI::COLBY | KEN | Wed Aug 12 1987 14:36 | 13 |
| Al and Kay,
I am not too worried about either the reliability of the microprocessor
or the ability to withstand the heat. I have had a JR Century 7
for 3 years now, and I think it has withstood the heat well, and
I expect the IC's to be a similar technology in the transmitter.
I also think that in order to stay competative in the RC field,
that the testing of the units would be considerably. However, I
would not want the bells and whistles to be so cumbersome that setting
up the trims and everything would make the unit useless.

258.4 | TAKES A LICKIN'/KEEPS ON TICKIN' | GHANI::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT RC-AV8R | Wed Aug 12 1987 15:17 | 25 |
| Ken,
I already wrote this reply once but the system glitched and wouldn't
enter it, error message said system printer wouldn't do something???
Don't give the warm-fuzzies about the topic of hi-tech, does it?
What I said was, I guess you could say we're "acid-testing" the
Galaxy's heat tolerance just by flying it here in the summer....
so-far-so-good! Then I said the 4 primary functions (ail/elev/rudd/
throttle) are still trimmed by the conventional trim levers adjacent
to the stick assy. bezels. My observation, from watching my buddy
set up his Staggerwing, is that all other adjustments as easy as
operating yer' digital watch, probably easier.
The rig APPEARS quite conventional 'til you notice the little LCD
display window and adjacent "touch-sensitive" keypad at the bottom
of the transmitter face...very uncluttered in layout without the
myriad switch levers and bat-handles inherent to the more exotic
systems, e.g. Futaba PCM.
Bottom line, I think I'd buy one if I were currently shopping for
a new system provided, of course, no weirdness or eccentricity is
observed in Chuck's (or others') radio.

258.5 | LOOKS EVEN BETTER | 17946::COLBY | KEN | Wed Aug 12 1987 15:35 | 9 |
| Al,
I appreciate the inputs. I am waiting for the information for Circus
Hobbies to make sure that it has all of the options the Century
VII has (which I am sure that it does even though the ads do not
spell it out) and when I am sure of that I think I will probably
order myself one on 53.5 Hz. (My call letters are K1PTM).
Thanks,
Ken

| After having used the Galaxy for about 2 months, I have been very
pleased with its operation. It does take a little getting used
to, as with most radios, experience has to supplement the manual,
since the manual does not say all. (The manual is better than most
that I am familiar with.) It is becomming easier to set up that
when I first received it, and I do like the ease of setting pitch
curves, etc. Makes for much easier set-up on choppers.
