165.0. "Rocket Boost RC Gliders" by DONJON::CROWLEY () Wed May 13 1987 11:21

    Not sure if this belongs here or in the rockets notefile. Anyway....

    Anybody out there have any experience with rocket boost RC gliders?
    What I'm looking for is any plans anyone might have on building
    one. There doesn't seem to be any commercially available kits on
    the market for them. Lots of rockets with gliders are available
    (I have several) but nothing I've seen is big enough for RC.

    thanx

    I believe that any pyrotechnic devices are forbidden by AMA rules,
    so you couldn't do this at most of the RC club fields who are AMA
    affiliates. I believe CO2 cartridges may be used, but nothing that
    burns. Even smokers for skywriting have to be fed from engine heat
    only.

    (can you imagine what some clowns would start doing if they were
    allowed to put rockets, missles, etc on their RC planes??)

        Fore information on Radio Controlled Boost Gliders see note 105 in
        the ENGGSG::USERB:[ROCKETS]ROCKETRY conference (Select, KP7,
        etc.).

        As to the AMA safety code, it states rockets are only permitted
        when flown under the NAR safety code. Let me assure you that these
        models are flown under those rules, are quite safe (with a
        competent pilot!), and spectacular to watch. As a matter of fact,
        the AMA insurance even covers model rockets when flown under NAR
        safety code. Look at your membership card that you should have in
        your wallet.

        The AMA and NAR safety codes do prohibit the "clowns" from putting
        such rockets on RC planes. Unfortunately one prominent RC magazine
        (I don't get it so I don't recall who it was) published such a
        plan anyway. They also publish ads from a company that is in clear
        violation of the NAR/AMA safety code. To their credit, "Model
        Avaiation" did drop the ad in question when it was pointed out to
        them that the product was illegal.
