80.0. "Racing Scooters with K&B 20s" by TALLIS::FISHER (Kay R. Fisher) Thu Mar 05 1987 13:46

Scooter II

We were at the 495th meeting the other day and the subject of a special
racing contest and class for Scooter IIs with K&B 20 only came up. It's
suppose to be the poor man's way into racing.

Soooooo

How about some details from those who know.
I just looked up a Scooter II and they call for .40s.
Is the K&B 20 they want just any 20 or is it this new Sportster?
This is being advertised as a very quiet engine.

Soooooooooo
Can someone talk about experience with this engine?
Can somebody talk about the plane?
Is anybody around here going to try this?

              _!_
Bye ----O----

That's similar to what a few of us in western ma. are doing. A club
in northern conn. is running a Fun Fly race where by you come with
anything and race it. It's an attempt to let people know what racing
is like. It is also an attempt to get people racing Quickee 500.
With this in mind we have gone off and purchased a racer called
a scat cat. The engines used are K&B .40's. Minus the radio the
cost for a set up is about 100.00 including everything else needed
to finished the plane(covering etc.) What you are seeing may be
a club sponcered event similar to the fun fly race. I know of no
AMA rules governing such an event.

80.2Skooter II - Great planeSEDJAR::COZZENSWed Mar 25 1987 15:4710

Hi my name is Glenn Cozzens - I own a Skooter II with an O.S. 40FSR
and a tuned pipe. The plane is amazing and will do anything in the
book and still land slow. I'd like to try the same engine setup
in a Scat Cat 500. I believe it's an even better flier.

    	Anyone done it?

    	Glenn,
Why not just buy a scat cat and a K&B .40 and come race
Q500 with us? You should have been hear a week ago. I had a few
scat cats kits for sale. If you want and can get a few of your buddies
together to by Scat Cat's I can get you a good price on a case of
    them.

80.4fun pylon rules and hazards21568::ANKERAnker Berg-SonneMon Oct 31 1988 13:5342
In the Ramblings thread Dan mentioned a mid-air collision
in passing. Let me tell you a bit more about it.

Yesterday was the first day that we had our all-winter
pylon races. The way they work is that we have a ladder (current
ranking) and that anyone can be challenged to a race. The races
are with Scooter IIs powered by K&B 20 Sportster engines. A race
is 10 laps around two pylons. If the challenger wins he moves
above the challengee, otherwise nothing happens. I am the CD.
	The races run all winter.

The very first official race was me challenging another
club member, John Nilsson. He has a beautifully finished plane
in yellow with red flames on the wings and a shark's mouth on the
fuse. Mine is a rush-built one in baby blue and white, and also
	quite worn.

We were both very even and I managed to get ahead by not
cutting as many pylons as John, so he decided that he had lost
the race and just wanted to practice - never do that, your
opponents engine may quit. Anyway, we were rounding the closest
pylon neck and neck when we actually touched. I didn't take any
serious damage - slightly bruised wing tip - but his vertical
stab and rudder collapsed. Miraculously it stayed attached and
he managed to land it safely. The break was clen, so he was able
to glue it together again on the field.

This was only the third mid-air I ever witness and the
first I have been involved in. Lots of times I have thought I
was going to have one and it didn't happen, so this time when the
planes got close I just kept going!
