427.0. "Towing Info" by SPKALI::THOMAS () Mon Mar 02 1987 13:56
When I was in CXO a year and one half ago I had some excellent
instructions. They taught me many a thing about sailplanes one of
which was that there are three distinct parts to a tow.
Part 1.
The first third of a launch either on a high start or
a winch is where most of the height is attained. Thru this part of
the launch one should strive to keep maximum elevator input into the
plane while being careful not to stall the ship.
Part 2.
The second third of the launch is the speed section.
This is where you get the forward speed going on your ship.
Part 3.
The third section of the launch is the directional
part of the launch. If you intend to head towards the left, center
or right upon release then start now. The only time this s not the case
in when you intend to head back behind yourself to look for lift.
These are the three parts of a launch. Using them
well is one step closer to that max. flight.
One final note, Before you launch know in your mind
what you are going to do during the flight. Know where you are going to
go to look for lift and how you are going to get there. A few seconds
of indecision could cost you that max. flight.
