You sent me a note that indicated that you are considering buying
a supertiger 46 bull ring. Two flyers from my club have owned this
engine and both have had bad result. The engine fails to run smoothly
through all ranges. if you set it up for high end you will have
problems with the mid and low range. The opposite is also correct.
If your considering a .45 I would suggect you go one step further
and get the COMO .51. This is an excellent engine and for a good
price. I have seen all the variations of this engine run and it
exhibits excellent charactristics thru all ranges. The cans also
fits all std. .40 sixe engine mounts. This will give you flexability
when the time comes to move the engine to that newer plane. If you
would like to revive the old ship for say a fun fly any .4o sized
engine can then be thrown into the ship. We have found that the
COMO .51 runs best with a 10/7 prop. I am using a cut down 11/7
rev up and it is handling this prop fine.
You may also want to check with Indy RC. They run a used engine
service. I have used a few engines from them that were great running
engines for cheap bucks. I have bought a few .40 engines rated 7
or 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 for as little as $23.00. Many times you
will find that a guy gets rid of a couple good engines to get credit
towards a newer engine he buys from INDY.
I also have two FOX .45 schn. I bought new a couple of years
ago for $25.00 a piece new and they are real brutes. A new FOx
.45 schn BB may be the way to go. In the past Fox has had a poor
name in the RC world because the carbs were difficult to adjust.
The fox design had the fuel nipple integrated as part of the high
speed needle valve. With the new MX carb the fuel nipple/carb set
up is similar to the std cabrs you see on all engines these days.
GOOD LUCK
Tom
