200.3Indoor Track in N.H.KANE::ABRAMSMon Jan 26 1987 14:5125

I know of one track that has winter racing. They have races
    Sunday's and Wednesday's starting about 6:30 to 7:00. Registration
and practice is about one hour before the race begins. They have
a 4wd and 2wd class. Cost to race is $10.00 which includes two
qualifing heats with a final race for the different Mains. The
race track is located in Derry, N.H. off of RT28, the address for
    the place is

    		Grand View Flea Market/Raceway
    		Rockingham Road
    		Derry, N. H.

    		phone: 603-432-2326

If you plan on racing and have never raced before, just one
word of caution, bring plenty of spare parts (front ends, servo
savers, and connecting arms). Crashes into the track wall and other
cars tends to find all the weaks points of the front ends.

Note: This place also has alot of tables so you can work on your
cars and charge your batteries between races and practice runs.

re: 2.3 Are you racing on dirt, carpet, wood.....?

Also, there are a variety of heavyduty front
ends and servo savers for your son's car available
    	           from various equipment makers.

    	re: 2.4

The track is carpet. It is the green minature golf course carpet.
It seems that the best tires for this carpet is the wide road tires
for the front and rear. These tires give good traction and also
give you the little slippage that you need on the corners, the
sponge rubber tires tend to grip too much which causes flips on
    the corners.

I am checking on a servo saver that is used in the super champ,
it is spring loaded which is adjustable.

200.6Fitchburg LocationNISYSI::LOWEWed Feb 11 1987 11:399
To the best of my knowledge there is no track currently operating
in the Leominster/Fitchburg area. The owner of Miner's TV at
the Searstown Mall is looking for a location to start such a venture.
He had looked at several locations including a hanger at Fitchburg
Airport but to my knowledge no decision has been made.

Miner is sincere about opening a track since it would support his
growing RC business. I'll post a note when I have more information.
200.7You can find it in the Yellow PagesKANE::ABRAMSWed Feb 11 1987 12:3215

How I find out about race tracks is to sit down with the yellow
pages and call every RC shop within a 40 mile radius of your area.
Most likely at least one or more of the shops will be sponsoring
the races or will know of where they are held. In my area the RC
shops tend to sponsor the races because it brings in good publicity
and it sells parts/up-grades to all the people who race. It also
tend to get more people interested in the RC stuff and promotes
    more customers.
You can also contact the shops for information about ROAR and
contact them for any ROAR sponsored races in the N.E. area.

Just last night I was in contact with the owner of Doogles
    Raceway/bowling it's a hobbyshop/bowling/arcade everything in Lawrence.
He is very interested in getting an indoor track going for his serious
clients. He told me that if I were to come up with 20 - 30 people
he would sponsor the races and so on. I already have 10 so if any
of you think you might be interested please send me mail on
OBLIO::PLOURDE nothing is completely definate yet but it's one of
those things were if I don't hear from enough people it never could
be a definate thing. Right now I'm running on an indoor track made
of rubber, it is beautiful, it's 73' by 15' oval it has mogals,
banked corner, jump, dirt corner and more. We currently run for laps
though meaning 1 car on the track at a time for two a two minute
run. the record amount of laps is 16. The reason why I'm mentioning
this track isn't to rub noses in it but we are trying to move the
track to another location pay rent for space and get affiliated
with a hobby shop. To do this we need other participants (SP) we
can't afford doing this with only 10 people. Ron

There is a group that races off-road electrics (2wd,4wd classes)
at Framingham North High School on sunday afternoons. They begin
again in april. The cost to join is $1 for the year. I am not too
sure exactly what they have but can get more info if you are
    interested.

Also, Modelville hobby in Ashland is going to open an oval indoor
track for 1/12 on road cars soon. They are waiting for someone to
vacate the basement so that the track can be set up.

I work in Shrewsbury and live in Franklin and would also be very
interested in finding a decent place to race. I plan to check out
the group at North High in april and the track at Modellville. If
anyone knows of other tracks nearby please speak-up.

Found another track! This one is in weymouth ( a little far for
some of you I'm sure). They have both 1/10th and 1/12th scale tracks
and organized racing. The name of the place is Turbo Track Raceways

This past weekend I took a trip to McManus hobbies in Fitchburg, next
door to them is an indoor race track. I did not go in and don't know any
details at all. I just saw that the shop next door to McManus had a race
track. I'll leave the investigating to some one else since I don't know
the first thing about R/C cars.

The Weymouth track is the first I've seen, so I can't compare it
to any others... I checked it out over the weekend with my FALCON,
and found that either the dirt track is too small, or my car is too
fast. (I'm just not used to needing to make those sharp turns.)
The terrain was nice and challenging, though.

They have 2 tracks, the carpeted one is an oval with a couple of
    jogs in it.

Pricing is reasonable. Non-members are charged $4.50 for 1/2 hour,
paying $.75 over the members' rate. Membership is $35, which gets
you a hat, tee-shirt, and discounts.

Kits and parts are available. $14.75 for 4 bearings, the FALCON
    was $119 there.

Races are Wednesday nights, entry time is 6:30, limited to 32 racers.

I've been to the track in Weymouth several times now. I also found
the dirt track a little small. Also, the dirt they have causes the
car to get extremely dirty. I do however enjoy the carpet track
(with my 1/12th scale rc12i) and try to get down there to practice
when I can. I also have observed the wednesday night races and found
them to be pretty good. There were a few very talented racers there
the night I attended. I plan on racing there as soon as my driving
    skills sharpen up a bit!

Does anyone have any info on a track in R.I. someplace near the
    Warwick airport I believe????

Yes, I have seen that there is an indoor track next to McManus
in Fitchburg, seems to be a carpet track.

Also, Miner's has scheduled May 30th at the Street Hockey arena in
Fitchburg. They want see what kind of turnout they get. Although
I've been to the store, no one ever mentioned it, so it is not being
promoted. I had to ask about it.

There is an outdoor track in the Fitchburg area. I was in a new
hobby shop in south Nashua the other day and they had some maps
showing where it was. It is just off of route 13 on West Townsend
Road, just east of 13. (The road is only about 1 block long on
that side of 13, so the place should be real easy to find.)

I don't know much more than this. I don't even remember the name
of the new shop. I was on D.W. Highway and seems to be run by an
Asian guy. The focus of the shop seems to be RC stuff.

The shop mentioned in 2.19 is Hobby Etc. in Lamplighter Square,
across from the Pheasant Lane Mall. The shop is almost strictly
RC cars. They stock alot, they'll get parts fast, and they charge
    list price.

They're good to use on a Wednesday when you have to race on Sunday.

I called Mcmanus and he told me that the building next to him DID
have a place to run ,but it's gone now. He told me to contact
someone at Miners (at the Searstown mall), he heard they had a club.
So.....I called Miners and this is what I found.
There is a club called "The Colonial Auto Racers" but they are not
sponsored by Miners. They have races at the roller skating rink
on Rt. 2 in Lancaster or Leominster (not sure of the town line).
I went last night to check it out. (I never raced before.)
They race on Tuesday nights, prelims start at 6:30 (I think)
It costs $10.00 and you race three times. One prelim and two real
races. They have novice, stock, modified, 4w drive, truck and possibly
    more classes.

Anybody out there race at this place? Maybe someone else could give
more detailed info. I plan to try it out some Tuesday night. From
what I saw last night though, I'll need to get some extra front
end parts before I try it. Some of the races get pretty messy. Ouch!

Pratt's Hobby Shop in Georgetown, Ma sponsors racing in the parking
lot across from the store every Wednesday night from 6:00 - 9:00.
There is no charge, they just get together and race for fun. There
are some pros who show up sometimes for practice. The shop itself
is pretty well stocked and the owner seems quite knowledgable and
very accomodating (I bought my first kit in Hong Kong, told him,
and he has still been extremely nice). Store and racing on Route
133 in Georgetown Square, accessable from either Route 95 or Route
    1.

While out driving over the weekend, I spotted an R/C car track
which i've never seen before and can't remember being mentioned
here in notes. It's the "THOMPSON R/C SPEEDWAY" and it's located
on RT28 on the north side of Derry NH (behind a martial arts
studio). The sign outside said that it's an indoor dirt track.
I didn't go in as I was on my way to go flying (one must keep one's

for anyone who didn't know about it.

I've been to Thompson's Raceway in Derry a couple of times and I
thought I'd pass on some info about it.

Thompson's has an indoor dirt track that is set up as either an
oval with banked corners or an off-road track with jumps, hairpin
turns, etc. depending on the day. The track has good dirt (good
traction with little dust) and is all walled in. It is kind of
small but can easily handle 6 cars at a time. There is a driver's
stand, a radio rack, and a pit area with counters to work at and
    plugs for rechargers.

There are very few replacement parts available (AA batteries, glue,
some tires) so bring your own. There is a coke and a snack machine
and a restroom for people maintenance.

As for the racing part, there are three races a week:

o Wednesday the hot night with ROAR stock racing on the off-road
track. Cars and motors must be ROAR stock. Winners get trophies
       and gift certificates.

The entry fee is $10 which gets you practice time, 3 4-minute
prelim's and a main heat. Registration and practice starts at
6, the racing starts at 7 and end when it ends.

The owner is trying to get ROAR sanctioning for this race so
in the future winners would get points in the national points
       race.

o Sundays is "race what you brung" off road racing. There are
formal classes (novice, stock, modified, master) defined but
grouping is basically according to performance in the prelim's.

Registration is $10 and starts at 11:00 and racing starts a noon.

o Saturdays is "race what you brung" oval racing (this is the one
I tried). Again cars are grouped by performance in the
preliminaries but trophies go to the first 3 finishers of each
main so there is a good chance to bring one home. I went up
with my son (who raced RC-10's with his grasshopper) and my brother
and we all came home with trophies, it was great.

Registration and practice begins at 6:00 and the racing starts
at 7:00. The entry fee is $10.

Thompson's normal operating hours are from 2:00 to 9:00, practice
time is available any time there isn't a race. Practice time goes
    for $4 an hour.

In general the track is fairly easy to find, I found it immediately
coming from 40 miles away. It's on route 28, the real one not the
bypass, in Derry, north of Derry "center". It's a brick building
behind a Meserve Karate Center and it has a sign.

Pretty much anyone can go, I saw Nikko's racing (losing) and have
seen several parents watching as their kids try out their new cars.

Made the trek to Thompson last weekend for the Saturday night races and
when we got there the place was gone. Signs gone, lights off, doors
locked, and the driver's stand was outside behind the building.

Checking out the local hobby shops I heard that last monday the owner
spread the work that last wednesday would be the last race. After the
race he closed the place up.

I didn't hear anything offical but the rumor is that he wasn't making
    enough money make ends meet.

Sigh. Looks like now I gotta run my Turbo Ultima with gobs of
suspension and ground clearence on a dead flat roller rink. Maybe in
the spring something off-road will open up outdoors.

race schedule has changed slightly. They are only racing on Sunday,
Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. I picked up a few schedules that they
had printed up it has the schedule and type of races along with the rules
and some other notes. It's to long to type in here so if any one wants one
send mail to VIDEO::DAIGNEAULT with your address and I'll pop one in the
    mail for you.

I'm still racing there....it's getting good. The 1/12 classes are
extremely competitive on Sunday nights (modified) with 18-20 entries
showing up, so we're running three heats. The 1/10 direct drive class
is getting better but is usually a little thin. My son has been racing
on Wed nights with usually 6 cars in 1/12 stock.

Sun and Wed are still onroad with Fri and Sat oval. I haven't been
racing oval but have been told it's pretty crazy.

Let me know if you have any questions about what's competitive in
    your class.
