The 1995 Quabbin MDC controlled deer "herd thining" is almost over. I drew for Petersham this new and the only deer I saw was dead. She was wobbling around 100 yards and dropped. It had just been shot. What a long cold two days that was. I was hoping to at least see one... nope.. The first group of 300 hunters in Petersham went in on Fri. and Sat. The pulled out 98 deer. This past Mon. and Tues., our group of 300 only pulled out 54. Not good at all... I'll post the rest of the results when the MDC gets them. BJ

Today's Worc/Tel & Gaz reported that only 237 (137 D/ 100 B) had been harvested. They attributed the lower yield to the fact that only ~ 80% of those selected with permits actually hunted. They still estimate that there are 20 deer per square mile with a goal of reducing the number to 10-12. I think the above is correctly recalled, but I'll bring the article in tomorrow and correct my errors if any. Interestingly, last week the author of this column (Joe Miechiewitz) reported on the larger deer which had been taken in the Quabbin, archery and week 1 shotgun - no mention of any Quabbin "trophy's. I saved that article as well and will try to post it tomorrow. Biggest was from Bourne. |
