I saw the report on Channel 5. They had a short excerpt from
Tom Berube (Mass Sportsman's Council) and from a woman from
the MSPCA.. It was objective, but the bottom line was that
the F & W Division was leaning toward "Sharpshooters". Gee
I wonder where they're going to get the money with the Physcal
Condition of Massachusetts now??
Another question : Who are these "Sharpshooters" anyway?? How
do I get this position ;-) ;-) I wonder what they'd do with
the deer that were thinned out??

| re .1 Who are these sharpshooters ?
Wish I knew. And what makes a 'sharpshooter' more able
to *find* the deer in the woods ?
We ought to lobby for a law to the effect that any time
a deer population problem exists the HUNTERS will get first
crack at it. The MSPCA needs to be set back on their asses.

I agree. It's not like they're doing us any favors. It's our
licenses/fees that keep the whole thing going.

| I heard they might be giving out 200 or so permits and pick them
from a basket but they are worried about a mass war in the woods and
things might get out of hand....

I live in Western Mass and to my knowledge Quabin is not fenced
in. There is a large deer herd. When the areas surrounding Quabin
get hunted the herd gets larger due to hunting pressuring deer into
the quabin. The huggers will probably win but don't worry about
the deer. Nature will run it's course and kill most of them. If
not this winter then the next or the next.
We make a annual trip up to an orchary to pick apples that is
adjacent to Quabin. A couple of years ago I was talking to the owners
kid and he mentioned having to dispose of carcuses (sp) each spring
due to winter kill. He say's it happens every year.

| Re. Winter kill. The Eagle population out there also feeds very
heavily on the winter kill. In the winter you
can sometimes, with binoculars watch them feed
out on the ice.

| re .6 The upper end of the Prescott peminsula is nominally
fenced, from the West Branch of the Swift northward. The
fence is down in many spots. (I used to hike there a lot.)
This morning's paper mentioned a bill being introduced to
allow limited hunting in the Quabbin. Public hearings will
be held. Be sure to attend and plan on debunking anti-hunting
propaganda from MSPCA et al.

I remember a few years back the Florida Everglades
had more deer than it could handle. So hunting wasn't allowed
and the anti's tried to prove they could just go in and rescue
the critters. Well they wound up injuring them and killing
some by mistake, Bambi wouldn't just step in the boats. I believe
hunting was finally allowed.

562.10 | Deer population at KSC | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Wed Nov 29 1989 16:49 | 25 |
| When I worked at Kennedy Space Center they had quite a deer population!
If you had to come in around midnight for launch support, you were
really vulnerable because the deer were moving all around. If you've
never been to KSC, or Cape Canaveral, the area is *huge* (I've since
forgotten how many square miles but it was a half hour drive from the
South Gate to where we worked at the VAB). My roomate had his car hit
twice by deer. That's right, the deer hit him; once in each rear
quarter panel costing him plenty. Cars were being totalled and many
accidents would occur by people trying to miss them. You get the
point.
Nasa and the Air Force decided to kill off some deer. The problem
wasn't the antis. The problem was that they didn't want any .30
caliber holes in the shuttle or a Delta etc. So they let the security
guards hunt on weekends. Boy, talk about venison everywhere. If you
knew a guard, you were in fat city. They had smoked venison, venison
sausage, pepperoni....you name it.
I'm not sure if it cut down on the number of collisions, but there sure
were a lot of happy red necks (affectionate term...no cards and letters
please).
Just thought I'd pass on a story with a happy ending.

Yea, lets relocate them into my freezer!!!!
I'm also a sharp shooter, no problem hitting the black circle at 100
yards with my shot gun, if I could use my 30/30 that even better.
