533.0. "A friends first deer......" by SALEM::ALLORE (All I want is ONE shot!) Tue Oct 31 1989 13:34

I was just glancing through the file reading old notes
and such and it got me thinking back to some past hunts. Some
of them being the happiest times of my life. I thought this
could be a note dedicated to some of our past hunts. If there
already is a note devoted to this then feel free to move it
    Mr. Moderator.

One that I have fond memories of is one of the times
that I went hunting with my friend Paul "Pappy" Hale and his
brother-in-law Bob. We decided to hunt Sunapee, I had hunted
there for years and knew the area well. Between my father and
brothers, we had taken a few deer and even a bear from the
area, so I knew it had possibillities.
Anyway, we got to the spot where we always had camped
in the past and set up. I should mention it was dark AND rain-
ing. After we were set up we sat around and discussed the open-
ing day strategy. Well, if I remember correctly we all got up
late and it was still raining but we went out anyway. So, first
day, zippo. No-one saw a thing. There were a lot of tracks though.
    Aren't there always?
Well, I'm not sure if it was the second or third day
but I walked down the dirt road by our camp and noticed some
tracks going across the road. Hmmmm, I thought, those weren't
there yesterday. I walked further down the road and after about
100 yards I turned around and started back. When I reached the
spot where I had seen the tracks I froze. They had recrossed
in the short time it had taken me to walk the 100 yards or so.
I went to camp and told Pappy and Bob about what I had discovered
and we thought we would try a small drive. It was a small area
that they had gone to surrounded by roads so we figured that at
least one of us should come across something.
We picked our points of entry and into the woods we
went. I followed the tracks in but lost them in the new fallen
leaves. I still hunted for awhile then headed to the stand that
I had been using previously. I had been sitting for maybe one
hour when I heard a shot. It came from the direction of which
Pappy had gone. I thought, alright! The old man had shot one
and it was his first! I proceeded towards the sound of the shot
and began calling for him. I'm yelling, did you get one? His
replied sounded like, NO. But as I got closer I realized he was
saying DOE. Here's where it gets good. I finally get to him and
there was this poor deer. I don't mean because it was dead but
he had the thing hog-tied like he was in a steer wrestling contest
at a rodeo. And to top it off he hadn't even gutted it yet!
I asked him why the heck he had it all tied because you have to
gut it before we drag it. He says, well I never gutted one before
and I don't know how. Great, a rookie, but I was one once so I'm
gonna talk ya through it. No problem right? Haaa, I tell him to
turn it over onto its back. Untie it first of all. Now, cut around
the a**hole. He just looks at me blankly. So I tell him, CUT AROUND
the A**HOLE. Still nothing. At this point I asked him what the heck
is the matter? He says, why are you calling me an a**hole? He thought
I was saying, cut it you a**hole! That's when I took over........
Okay, it's gutted and we get it to the road and then to
camp. I decide I'm going back out because there is still some day
light left. I see nothing that evening and head back to camp. But
what a sight I see when I do return. The deer, which Pappy had shot
is hanging, I'd say a good 25 feet in the air. He had cut down three
trees which would have made good telephone poles and bound them
together, teepee style. Then hoisted the deer up to the peak. I
don't know if he was afraid a grizzly might come and steal it or
what. It sure was a sight to see though.
Now, I'm not making fun of him and I was probably happier
then he was that he had gotten his first deer. The best part of all
is that I got to share this memory with him. We've hunted together
a lot and probably always will and it's not just the hunting part
but the good times that come from it that keep me in the woods
    year after year..........

               Bob

P.S. I still don't think he knows how to gut a deer though......;^)

533.10Do you really want to admit this was your first?ODIXIE::RIDGWAYFlorida NativeWed Nov 01 1989 11:1310
Just out of curiosity how many people still believe in "bloody-ing" a
person for his first kill? How about cutting their shirt tail?

Are these "traditions" everywhere? The place I hunt we tend not to do
this, but I know places that still do. It makes some people very
reluctant to admit it was their first deer!

    Two weeks and counting.....

Boy Old Pappy must have been pumped up big time to erect a tripod
all by himself and haul all that dead weight up. Or did he use a
    pully system??

 Hi, Tom
Pappy here, I used a pully system that I took with us,just in
case we got a deer.(good thing I did) The problem was getting the
poles up after I tired them together.

533.13shirt tail cutting a thing of the past?CSCOA5::HUFFSTETLERThu Nov 02 1989 12:3912
re .10

I know of some people who say that they'll cut your shirt-tail if you
miss one, but I've never hunted with any of them. As for"bloody-ing,"
are you talking about someone drinking the blood of their first kill?
In any case, I think most of this stuff is left over from the past and
kept alive by a few throwbacks.

Besides, we manage to rib anyone that misses one enough so that he
wishes we'd cut his shirt-tail and shut up! ;^)

RE: -1 As for"bloody-ing," are you talking about someone drinking

That's not my understanding. I think it's normally just smearing your
face with the deer's blood. Drink it - YUK!

The tradition is to cut out the heart and drink that blood.

Note: I didn't do it, but saw a guy do it.
My interpretation of this was to fry the heart for dinner.

Being a "throwback" and coming from the South orig , I have
participated in the above mentioned "bloodying ". No you don't drink
blood from the heart , it is an old trad that when a person shoots his
first deer some of the blood be smeared over that lucky individual in
the face area . The trick was not to let the people you were with know
    you were an uninitiated .
The shirt tail cutting also is a throwback to the south where deer
hunting is often done with hounds and is much more a social get
together than it is up north . With very liberal limits many hunters in
the south spend many days in the woods and therefore have many more
chances at shots at very fast running deer (hounds in hot pursuit).

I can say all of this because I was raised on this type of hunting .

    re:.5 &.6

Well I`m back from the great state of Wyoming. It`s pretty rugged
out there. In our party 6 out of 9 people got bucks. I was one of
the six ..... this was my first deer !! Mine was the smallest (a
small spike) the biggest was a 14 pt whitetail.

Like i said it`s a different style of hunting than the type they
do here in Michigan. Very rockey mountainous territory. Most shots
are over 150 yds. IN fact most are over 200 yds. I missed big bucks
on the first & second day out, then didn`t see another buck until
the end of the hunt. Saw about 25-35 does per day, but I was trying
    to get a rack.

We hunted in the NE corner of Wyoming (Crook County) about 60 mile
north of Sundance or 15 miles south of Huelet (pop 291) which is
near Devils Tower. Had a great time, as we had over 6000 acres to
ourselves...... couldn`t have found another person if I had to.

I didn`t get the big one, but as we packed up to come home the
other guys said wait till next year. Soooooooo Guess I`ll be goin
back ..... now that I`ve got the first one out of the way it should
    be a snap .....right????/ 8^)

533.2110 seconds of buck fever...WAHOO::LEVESQUEAs you merged, power surged- togetherMon Nov 27 1989 10:5341
I almost managed to bag my first deer on Saturday. This is what we live for.
:-)

I was working along the edge of a swamp. My cousin and I had just split up, and
I was taking the lowland route. I came to an area that was flooded, about 20
feet across, and was frozen over. I looked for a way to cross- none was
apparent. So I decided to test the ice. One foot- ok. Two feet (splash!). Crap.
So I swore at myself for a couple of seconds- then I heard something that made
me look up.

A group of five deer were crashing through the bushes right in front of me.
My jaw dropped, and I thought "This is it!" The lead deer, a six pointer, was
stopped directly in front of me, on the other side of the frozen puddle. I
fumbled for the safety, and he took off. Finally, safety off, I shouldered
the shotgun. At this point he was past me, about 50-60 feet away. Shaking
with excitement, I let one fly. Pop! Now he lit the afterburners. I could have
taken another shot, but being unsure of exactly where my cousin was, I declined.
I began to run after them, hoping for another shot. Pop! My cousin shot at the
6 pointer. And they were gone.

Practically dizzy with excitement, I was shaking all over. "D'you hit em?"
"Nope." "Me neither."

So I went to find where the slug had hit, to ensure I hadn't hit him. No hair,
no blood, hole in the ground. I didn't hit him. The we found where my
cousin's bullet hit. Again, nothing.

We did see a little hair on one side of the road, but it appeared to be some
that had rubbed off on an overhanging branch. No blood. We tracked the deer
for quite a ways without finding any indication that we had hit him. We are
sure we missed.

What an experience. "Worth the price of admission."

So I blew it. But I don't really mind. (Though it would have been nice to get
a six pointer for my first deer. :-)

Boy, I'm glad that we have notes. :-) I couldn't wait to tell some people
that would understand.
