1108.0. "Merc 115hp floods out" by MSBCS::HURLEY () Thu Sep 02 1993 16:08

    I'm putting this question in for a friend who has A mercury 115
    outboard motor. He just got back from vaca up in Maine with his
    boat and had some problems with the motor. Its a 1986 and he said
    the first day the motor ran great, no problems at all. From the 2nd
    day on the motor when first started up ran great with no power
    problems. ONce the motor had been running for about 1/2 hour that when
    the problems began. Whenever he tried for quick pickup the motor would
    bog down and flood out. He said that if he increased the gas just a
    little at a time the motor would perfrom fine and pick up speed, but
    once he gives it a good quick nudge the motor bogs down and floods out.

    	Any thoughts??

    Rick, U still doing motors on the side?

      It could be a million things, but I'd check the plugs first. When the
    plugs are carboned up, they have a weaker spark. Under load
    (Accelerating is worst) a sparkplug is much more likely not to fire
    than at any other time.

    Another noter recently had a similar problem. Turned out one of the
    spark plug wires was arcing . They replaced the wires and plugs (if I
    remember correctly) and the problem went away. Would be most
    noticeable during acceleration.

    I should have mentioned the plugs were changed the first time it
    happened. Same problem after. I'll suggest the wires to him and maybe
    its a simple fix?

      It could be the wires. It could also be one or more coils. I do vote
    for spark-related, though.

    A little trick we used to use on auotmotive wires was to spray them
    with Windex and start the vehicle up. If the area is dark enough and
    the wires are bad you'll see them "arc" out right away.

    I personally like to grab each wire while standing in the water to see
    which one gives me the biggest jolt!

    Just kidding! Just kidding! Just kidding! Just kidding! Just kidding!

1108.7Likely not the wires ...11SRUS::FYFEUnited We Stand America - 800 283-6871Mon Sep 13 1993 11:338
If the wires were the cause it would run poorly right from the start and
not wait 1/2 hour to start failing.

Sounds to me like a fuel flow problem, likely caused by excessive vacuum in the
fuel tank built up over time.
